#100 Gearbox grinding went away after lubrication (some parts of the video were reused)
#2 Motor never stalled anymore. Possibly due to better wiring.
#3 Nozzle was drilled to 1.9mm to produce 1.75mm PLA. 1.6mm for ABS, exactly like it was with filastruder.
#4 Recycled plastic extrudes ONLY in horizontal position.

Very cool thanks for the info, a lot of these machines do require tinkering to get perfect, this was very informative!
One small correction for the schematic: the push-button switch needs to be wired across (ie, parallel to) the switched relay terminals. This allows the push-button switch to temporarily bypass the relay in order to provide power to the power supply, thus letting the power supply engage the relay. Your schematic shows the push-button switch in series with the relay switched terminals, which doesn't let the system get powered on.
How do you wire that? Can you provide a schematic?

Hi, you mentioned in #4 that recycled plastic extrudes only in horizontal positions. If I were to be working with recycled plastic bottle caps (polypropylene) I tried extruding it (with filastruder) in the horizontal position but it had varying thickness which made it very hard to print. Do you have any suggestions to help with my process?

Tony, this setup look ideal for the making of nylon ukulele strings. Can one buy parts for this machine to make extruded line that is as small as .50mm?
I feel frustrated the American extruder company doesn't reply to emails for days I would expect for the price service would be faster. Filastruder customer service is good but it may be more of a tinkering project than I am ready for. This wellzoom looked promising because it uses a stepper to drive a screw rather than a DC motor that could be prone to voltage swings and slight RPM changes. Then I found your amazon review and then this video. Yikes!!!! I can't win. I feel like all of these check one box but miss another. Thank you for the video and amazon review.

Tony - Thank you for the review. Now that you have worked out the initial bugs on this machine (last year), and working with the unit for the last year, would you place purchase for this make/model again? or would you go with a different make/model, keeping within the same price range? I ask because I am seriously thinking about placing purchase for a filament extruder here in the near future. Was looking at possibly making my own from scratch, but after adding up the piece parts, time and effort to do so, its seems it may be more cost effective to place purchase for one in this price range. All advice is welcome. Thank you again for the review on this particular unit.

Faster motor ?
Not gonna happen. You will need more powerful heater to melt faster. Then you gonna need water cooling to handle the material then you need stronger frame to handle the resistance etc.
It's balanced the way it is. No upgrade needed.
Wellzoom does make a faster machine but it comes at a cost. Two heating zones and does 150 inches per minute. The single zone that Tony and I have will do about 10 inches per minute.

Thank you for such an informative video! I really like the idea of the automotive switch safety feature - I never thought about that. I am definitely going to implement this feature in my extruder that I am building. However, for the life of me, I can't figure out how you hooked up the relay. The relay looks fairly simple, but the way that I am imagining it working, I can't get this "latching" effect. It just seems like everything will turn back on again when the power comes back. Would you be able to go into a little more detail on this (maybe which pins are connected to what?). I imagine that the 24V is connected to the solenoid (pins 85 and 86) and that the 110V is connected to the high power side (pins 87 and 30). I'm not sure where the switch comes into play. Thanks in advance! Looking forward to implementing this!

hi, i have a question? I don't know if you've ever prayed If there was any way to convert the hot silicone rubber the sticks into filament to extrude. I find it very interesting to think about this material due to its properties

How would you compare this unit to the A- Filastruder (I am using that now for LDPE and not really happy), B- Filabot?

First off thank you for a very detailed review. I do have a few questions if you happen to see this. How accurate were your results were they truly within .05mm as advertised? Hi Tony, how do you control the diameter of the filament? Is the tolerance of the diameter good?
#1 nozzle diameter
#2 temperature
#3 filament sag before it enters the loop. More sag=less diameter.
If filament comes out larger, increase the sag before it enters the loop and filament weight will stretch its self changing the diameter very slightly.
Its a tricky process. ABS is very easy to control while PLA and PETG are tricky.
If anything, learning to use this machine with ABS is the easiest way.

Hi Tony ! My nozzle keeps getting blocked every 2 minutes and material starts to get extruded very slowly. Do you know why? I’m printing PLA at 190. Not sure how to stop this from happening !
Do you have a filter ? Clean by burning it
Dirt or residual plastic or junk on the screw. Take apart, clean and polish if possible.
Contaminated PLA colorant powder thats not 100% powder but has little strings in it that clog everything ?
Hey man, can you tell me why you insist on the vertical extrusion? What aspect of extrusion does it improve? I have been getting my unit to work well horizontally but I cannot get the filament diameter to be wider than 1.6 mm for pla.
If you get consistent diameter but size is wrong, drill it out.
@@tonycstech haha that’s so ironic, I actually drilled it out to the diameter you suggested earlier today and it’s looking pretty good now. 1.7 mm filament from a 1.90 drilled out hole. I’m gonna try flipping it vertically see if it makes it easier to control. I have the wellzoom auto winder with optical sensor.

Very true, but they admit its challenging to work with (mainly because its brittle and difficult to spool) and their systems are extremely expensive, over $6k to start.

Mostly compression. Using a feeder screw mantains the compression stable and even during the extrusion, making filament with more consistent diameter

I know one fact, its has enough power to twist and break its self off if you turn it on cold for more then half a second.
I didnt want to confirm this so i turned it off.

You mentioned the feeder screw vs the drill bit diy approach. Is the feeder screw faster, does it mix better, work with more materials, or something else- eg what are the benefits you are seeing?

Do you find that this machine doesn't do well in a vertical position? Mine makes a grinding noise.
Nop. Mine runs smooth.
I mean it does squeak when pushing half molten plastic closer toward the melting area, but otherwise no.
Sometimes a pellet gets stuck on its way into the tube and gets forced in. That can sound like loud pop, but its just the pellet.

Tony Nameless I have tried all combinations: pid auto tune (at least 100 times, no joke) insulation, extrusion speed, heat resistance max output control, but nothing. Although the temp variation is +-0.5 C I have a periodic plastic output very hot, high speed, that ends to bigger filament diameter, +0.5mm that is out of tolerance... yesterday I tried on-off only without any pid control and seems much more stable..... any ideas?

Hey, can you share the dimensions of the nozzle? As far as I can guess, it looks like M 16, but I would like to know about the pitch and length of the thread.
If am not mistaken, its an M16X1.5 little over 8mm long thread.
21mm diameter nozzle its self with 17mm diameter hex pattern for supplied wrench.
Hole diameter depends on the filament you extrude. I use 1.9mm for PLA and 1.6mm for ABS

@@pranjalkhakse2582 Its best for ABS. Extrudes quickly. PLA is slow and tricky but ABS is super easy.

I didn't get how fast this machine is working. Looks like it is slightly faster than any ordinary printer can "eat" the filament?
I think i can produce anywhere from 2-3 spools in 24hrs of operation.
Less for PLA, more for ABS

Faster extrusion requires water-cooling.

The feedscrew is a "proper feedscrew" and not an auger (bit) like used by the DIYers? That is funny. An auger is a proper auger, except the wood auger bit is guaranteed to be good tool steel, unlike said feedscrew, except for the fact that said feedscrew looks to be a modified Chinese wood auger bit, which makes things even funnier.

The Amazon reviews for this product are terrible. Every time I watch a video about this particular model it’s always someone who knows what they’re doing and how to repair the machine and they’re the only people who can actually make use out of the machine.

@@khayelihlemadlala7655 they key component here is the compression screw and the barrel that will go over it with the diameter slightly bigger. Maybe 2-3mm bigger diameter, no more.
