Peter Frampton's solo in Natural Born Woman/Boogie, was the first I found which covered a large span of fretboard.. I often spanned 2-3 positions, but after that solo it was more like an octave over one string. Ian Bairnson often used larger than average spans of notes. A good start is to use the minor pentatonic 1st shape, and add the bottom notes of the 5th position/shape below, and the top notes of the 2nd position/shape above,
