I really enjoyed watching this video. He reminds me of my Dad who served in the Marine Corp for 25 years. I was a part of that for about the last 15 of those years. Once a Marine ... Always a Marine! Semper Fi to all the Marine vets who served their country!
Thank you Ira!! I have never and will never forget what you did for my freedom! I will make sure my nephews know what you said. Thank you very much! Welcome Home.
Ira, your interview was very important to me. All these years later I’m just now getting to understand all of the personal sacrifices every single one of you made for all of us back home. Thank you from my heart.
Thank you Mr. Caley for a powerful and tremendous interview. Thank you sir for your all you have done for the country... for your service... for the sacrifices you have made.
So many wise statements from Ira! His thoughts about what freedom is and what it has cost in blood. What he hopes he is remembered for. How those who responded to our nation’s call and served as our representatives in Vietnam need our support today. I’m the very proud father of an Army son who is a veteran of the war in Afghanistan, and was deployed to Poland early in the Spring of 2022. Definitely a show of force to Putin. All of our troops need and deserve our love and support. I was born in 1961. I’m proud of you Ira, and proud of all the many members of our military that served in war and peace. It requires sacrifice to do so. Welcome home, you are loved by more than you will ever know this side of heaven.

Mr. Caley, thank you for your service and welcome home. You served your country when She needed you. I’m glad you made it home. I was raised in Da Nang and saw a lot of Marines there. U.S. troops treated the South Vietnamese with kindness. The Hollywood crowd, draft dodgers, media, and politicians demonized the troops for their service in Vietnam. If I can see you, I’d reach out my hand to shake yours. May God bless you and your family. Larry Cappetto is a patriot who loves our military and veterans. Always hold your head high, no regrets. I definitely hold you in the highest regard. You have truly been through Hell. I have many friends that served in Vietnam, some didn’t come home. Oceanside is where Camp Pendleton trains our brave guys like this gentleman. Coronado beach is where Seal training is still happening, and it's scary to watch them endure it all bobbing in and out of water. I feel safe being there, surrounded by our Point Loma Navy Base and Seal guys/girls. It's awesome to watch the jets maneuver and dominate the sky by our Navy pilots. Thank you to the Armed Forces. You are protecting us all.
Thank You Ira for this interview. “You are the Real Deal.” I joined the Marines in Oct. 1963 but was on the 120 day program which allowed me to stay home for the holiday season. My official days were Jan. 7, 1964 to Jan. 7, 1968. I did not go to the Vietnam neighborhood by ship. 80 of us sat on the grass at El Toro and received a lecture before going onto a commercial jet W/ stewardesses. We were told (blatantly) that at least 80% of us would not be returning. Everything got pretty quiet at that time. When we got to Okinawa names were called out and 2 lines were formed. 13 of us got to stay on Okinawa and I was one of them. To this day - I don’t know how to think about that. I went through bootcamp with some of those guys. I worked in Supply and one of the items we crated-up were Body Bags. That was spooky.. I’m very Proud of this man. He never once bad-mouthed anything or anybody and still loves his country.
Another excellent interview Larry! Again, I can't help but be impressed with the underlying patriotism of these men; admirable to sat the least. Well done Ira.
Thank you Ira for stating so simply what war is! I hate these are the facts but each nation has his own beliefs. But I stand with you and the United States of America, home of the free snd the brave!

A warrior. A bit hoary at the edges. But the experience still so fresh in his mind. The look in his eyes, the understatement of his words. This is a man made wise to the ways of the world by being dropped into the horrors of war. I appreciate the interviewer but was frustrated by his interrupting Mr. Caley. Several times, Mr. Caley was looking deeply within himself, his lips starting to speak some painful but hard learned insights. And he was cut off by another question. A few years younger, I was almost drafted. It was an unpopular war. But I had resigned myself to going if I was called. The lottery system started and I got a very high number. I was very thankful that I did not have to go. But a little ashamed that men like Mr. Caley went and I didn't. And plagued by the question: Would I have what it takes? I have profound respect and deep empathy for those that went over and fought that war. I know several Vietnam vets and would never, ever ask them anything about their experiences. But I like to think they know that I respect them for their service.

Hey Ira,, Spending much time in Vietnam over the previous decades I have seen & experienced both sides of this sad conflict. You are a truly decent human.. Aside from the VN war being right or wrong, You my friend courageously did what was asked of you., All the best mate😉 Geoff Australia

I had a similar experience coming home from Nam through LAX w/a group of Hippies. One got in my face, his mistake, and the LAPD escorted me to my connecting gate. I too am damn proud of my Viet Nam service (Navy Corpsman/HM3) & can identify w/this veteran’s experiences & attitudes.
Thanks Ira! Our country owes you tremendous respect. I wanted to be in the riverine Navy, but wasn’t chosen. Spent my time on submarines. Got out in ‘75. Love you man! Side note: When I got home, some would ask me how many people I killed! These ignorant people didn’t have a clue as to what we did in the sub service. If they were jerks, I’d tell them that I had no idea! I’d say that we fired the missles, but we never knew where they landed. It pissed them off.
I was in the army with A company 1st 46th infantry of the 198th Light Infantry Brigade. I was a 1Lt Forward Observer and we were working in the mountains 35 miles southwest of Danang. At noon we stopped for lunch in an abandoned village. Me and one of the company commanders RTO went in to a grass hooch that had 3 twelve inch diameter teak logs stacked up all the way around it. The RTO was a guy from Los Angeles that had been convicted of manslaughter and given the choice of 5 years in prison or 2 years in the Army. As we were laying in the hooch eating lunch some people with belt fed machine guns started trying to cut that house down. This shook the RTO more than I thought it should have and he was laying over there cursing and shaking. Finally he yelled out "I should have chosen prison."

Happy that you recorded these while there was still time. I was long out of the Army when April 1975 came along. I was in so much shock that I couldn't sleep, thinking "It was all for nothing...every drop of blood, every dollar." What kept me sane was the thought that the politicians could never do anything as stupid again. I was wrong... we learned nothing... it's been just one Vietnam after another in my long life... in my 70's now. I now have two old adages I live by... "Only the dead have seen the end of war" (Plato) and "Those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it" (Santayana). He mentions something about how we were raised to think. Every red-blooded American boy was born to do at least one thing in his life --- kill Commies for Christ. Unless you grew up in the 1950's you cannot understand the honor and duty associated with that.

Now that you even mentioned the German Soldier from Omaha Beach, im even more interested in his story.
Olli, it is so great having you out there over in Germany listening this channel. Ira is a good friend of mine. I will share your comment with him. As far as Franz Gockel's story, I would hope to get that out at some point. God bless you!!
@@VoicesofHistory Thank you! Tell your friend, that he and his comrades are not forgotten, even in Germany. I have the highest respect for him.

Hey Ira,,
Spending much time in Vietnam over the previous decades I have seen & experienced both sides of this sad conflict.
You are a truly decent human..
Aside from the VN war being right or wrong, You my friend courageously did what was asked of you.,
All the best mate😉

I had a similar experience coming home from Nam through LAX w/a group of Hippies. One got in my face, his mistake, and the LAPD escorted me to my connecting gate. I too am damn proud of my Viet Nam service (Navy Corpsman/HM3) & can identify w/this veteran’s experiences & attitudes.

This is an honorable man!!!

Thank you Ira for doing your best when our country called. You can forgive yourself. It is grossly unfair the way our Viet Nam warriors were vilified for doing their duty. "Hate the war, not the warriors."

From the very first time I watched haunted heroes a Vietnam vet documentary at the age of 13 one thing really stood out to me… the vets eyes, I later found out they called it thousand yard stare…. Nowadays many decades later , it’s been replaced by eyes of hurt!!! So sad… welcome home ira..

Mr. Caley got his point across just fine.
My dad was a WWII vet....his hands shook until the day he died...mom said dad could not hold a cup of coffee without spilling when he first got back.

Why hasn't any president, senator, Congressman put in for a national remembrance day for Vietnam vets. I know we have Veterans Day, but I believe a specific date on the calendar should be reserved for them. God bless them all.
Let's get this done ASAP!!! I agree.
