Sally Won't Remember - Live @ Catapult

In the early summer of 2013, I wrote a song called Sally Won’t Remember. I wrote it over two afternoons, recorded it for my Motherland album and moved on.
In the summer of 2014, Stacy and I bought a house North West Philadelphia and I began to walk our dog, Dora and explore my neighborhood. Sometime during those early weeks and months I met Stella and Lyle. They were an elderly couple and were among the first people to welcome us into the neighborhood.
Gradually however I began to realize that Stella was (like in the song) losing her mind to age related dementia. Over the next two years, the lady I had looked forward to seeing each morning on the doorstep of her house, transformed from a witty (if somewhat absent minded) conversationalist, into a terrified jigsaw puzzle of a soul. It was absolutely heartbreaking.
Perhaps sadder still was how it affected her husband, Lyle. He was noticeably older than her and he struggled to get about on his own at the best of times. I was walking Dora one afternoon, when I found Lyle outside his house, clutching two walking sticks and trying to pick up what looked like a huge pile of personal belongings.
His wife had apparently thrown out the majority of their family photos and assorted memorabilia during the night because she thought it was from another woman. I returned Dora to our home, then helped Lyle tidy up and return their precious belongings to their house. In doing so, he told me of his trips to the UK while part of the US army back in the 1950s and how he’d become a fan of Arsenal FC in the process.
I asked him if he had any family of friends to help out but he just smiled ruefully and shook his head.
“That’s a long story son, but the short answers is no. My wife is all I have. She is everything to me.”
Over the next few weeks I would stop by to check on them both until one night in the autumn, a police car and an ambulance arrived at their house and almost the entire street watched them remove two covered bodies from the house.
This song is dedicated to Stella and Lyle because somebody should remember them.
