This was the beginning of demise of the Eagles once we no longer had Yekini! The team could not or struggled to score goals!Yekini would have had a hat trick in that game!I never knew Seedorf played wing back or right winger!I only remembered him as a midfield general at Ajax , Madeid and Milan! The Dutch showed "Total Football" in this game!
This was in the run up to the 1998 World Cup. Preparations were characterized by poor planning and player-indiscipline, and the team was given a roasting in this match. Yekini was part of the team, but was clearly past his peak. Kanu would eventually have his heart problem and not make the team to the World Cup. We would later play other warm up matches, losing 1-0 to Germany and 3-0 to Yugoslavia, among other prep matches. However, at the World Cup proper, the team shocked even their most ardent supporters (myself inclusive) by defeating Spain 3-2 in their opening match, and later qualifying from a group that also included Bulgaria and Paraguay. Equally shockingly, they fell 4-1 at the second round to a relatively poor Danish side. The Danes out-thought and out-worked the Eagles, and richly deserved their win. By that match, visions of glory had distracted the Eagles, and rather than focus on Denmark, the boys had trained their thoughts on Brazil, which was the next match. Rufai’s goalkeeping against Denmark was shocking. The entire team was totally not at the office on match day. For this match though, it must be noted that Holland was clearly one of the best teams in the world that year. They would eventually make it to the semi-final of the World Cup, and were only eliminated on penalties by Brazil after drawing 1-1 after extra time. There was nothing to choose between they and Brazil. In this match though, they met a Nigerian team that did not take the match seriously. The score would have been different under other circumstances. Though I still feel the Dutch were the better team, a 5-1 score line certainly flatters them!
