Icons are not just found of computer screens, they play an important role in religion. More words explained at www.wordsofthew... In this video is Monica White
Regarding the iconoclasm, I would like to point out that most Emperors decided to follow an iconoclastic policy mainly because the soldiers defending the empires boarders with the Arabs were in some way influenced by the Arabian traditions regarding divine depiction. This led them to follow the iconoclastic policy in order to appeal to that demographic to ensure the empires safety from the Arabian threat it faced.
I actually learned the word icon first from the Eastern Orthodox context. That was before I became familiar with the internet or new the kind of cultural icon sense of the word. Btw, I find words like these very fascinating, words that start out very simple (meaning "image") and then through borrowing become more abstract. It's obviously a sign of some kind of cultural development.
I always like to think of it like the 8 divines are the 8 planets of our solar system, and Pluto is Talos, who gets to be a god for a while until he is controversially demoted.
May I suggest a word? Or rather s few words. Quod erat demonstrandum. I know they're latin but I'd like to know more about them than that. Also, great video :)
is it just me, or is the story about the iconoclasm basically the backstory to Skyrim? A strange foreign empire invades and one of the concessions made was the removal of religious artifacts which the people were not happy to give up on the words of their own empire let alone an edict by a foreign power? Maybe it's just me
Well if such depictions were considered sacrilege isn't that an "reasonable" action? That statement really required me to go into devil's advocate mode :p
Yes they are not of this world. They are a celebration of the incarnation of the word. They represent a transfigured reality where divine meets matter. In so traditions says that they bring directly present to us the persons and events depicted in them by associations with the prototype.
As an ortodhox I find this very interesting, especially because a lot of these was new to me.

Well, Skyrim's history is based off of our own history's events, so I'm not surprised that there are similarities.
Is it just me or is it noticibly darker by the end of the video?
How long did you keep her talking Brady :O
