Camping with Lithium [ The Perfect Dual Battery Setup ]

  • Camping with Lithium , the perfect dual battery setup going forward.
This is my new look, Lithium dual battery setup for camping while Im out in the bush.
I have recently changed my dual battery setup in my 4WD from a lead acid battery under the bonnet to a light weight 100 amp hour lithium battery thats mounted inside my 4WD, this new setup runs all of my camping accessories.
There's a lot of advantages making the change from a big, heavy lead acid battery to a light weight lithium battery.
A lithium battery is about half of the weight, coming in at around 15 kgs.
You can use 100% of a lithium battery before it needs to be charged, where as the lead acid battery has only about 50% of the batteries capacity that is useable. Below that, you run the risk of damaging that battery.
It is a costly replacement changing over to running a lithium dual battery set up for camping accessories.
But, it is the way of the future going forward.
Have you made the change from lead acid batteries to a lithium battery to run all of your camping accessories?
What size have you got and how do you find it?

    G'day guys,
There's been a few replies saying it's ok to mount a lithium battery under the bonnet.
Thats fine if you want to do that.
But for me, there's so many reports say that Lithium batteries don't like going in an engine bay.
With the cost, it's not an experiment i wanted to take and find out down the track that the heat of the engine bay destroyed the battery.
Do your research guys on which way you go.

Usual recommendations for LiFePO4 batteries are:
      Charging: 0 °C - 45 °C
      Discharging : -20 °C - 55 °C
Especially charging below 0 °C will kill the cells, though the BMS should prevent this.
Unless the battery is in a separate compartment in the engine bay (Like a 80 series 'Cruiser) you're going to shorten the life of the battery. It doesn't matter what the manufacturer says, you can't beat the limitations of the chemistry.

    Nice set up Tim.
More importantly great to see you up and about , doing what you do !
I have been running a 100Ah lithium battery for almost 3 years now it brilliant and works well for me. I run an Engel draw fridge , Travel buddy , lights and CPAP off it and it plenty big enough for my needs.
Lithium has greater depth of discharge than AGM, so 100Ah in Lithium is roughly equivalent to 150-180 Ah in AGM ( my bush maths).
So reckon you should be ok with your set up.
    Keep the good work .

Another great review Tim. Just as a point of interest on the cost keep in mind that a Lithium battery can be discharged a lot lower than a lead acid or AGM, eg Lithium 80% AGM 20 %. So when you do the maths of cost versus usable capacity the Lithium is not that expensive. Also you will get more cycles out of a Lithium vs lead acid or AGM. Thanks for the great info I am sure many will find it useful.

Probably not the best solution, however, I can take the battery box out and use it as a stand alone power station out of the vehicle.
There is only me camping so I really don't need the back seats anyway. I'm only running fridge and lights (as you said keep it simple) so the battery will probably last about 3 days. I have to strap the battery in, and so far no issues, time will tell. Cheers, BobbyB.

Your going to love the change to lithium Tim. I've been using lithium for a couple of years now and it's far superior in every way to the old lead acid or agm batteries. That 100ah will be plenty of power and the solar panel will keep it topped up nicely. The lithium can be run down completely flat as well without damaging the battery whereas the old agm's would start to get damaged and the lifespan would shorten when you run them below 50%.
Only some lithium battery brands are suitable and warrantied to go under bonnet installation but they cost quite a lot more, you did the right thing putting it in the cab and it will be easier to add and connect more stuff later.

Any battery get life shortened as you discharge it. That's how they work. Lithium is no exception. A lithium can get discharged deeper more often with less damage but there is no problem at all discharging an AGM to 20% regularly. few people camp often enough over the 5-6 year lifespan of an AGM under the bonnet for discharge cycles to matter. The heat/cold will do the battery in well before that.

Glad you went with the 40amp DC charger, that should definitely cope with all your things requiring power. A lot of folks go with a lesser amount for their DC set ups and quickly find that they need a bigger one! Hi, yes I'm one of those guys whom have opted for lithium crank/winch battery. It's only been in place for 11months, but has not missed a beat thus far, and at the price I'd hope it won't miss a beat for a long time.
Interestingly, I'm a Patrol ZD30 also and as Tim would know, these things store a mass of under bonnet heat, but the starter battery being on engine intake side is much cooler than exhaust side against turbo heat bank, 😂 no way I'd ever fit any battery type in that location Tim and many others have them.
The lithium starter battery truly spins the ZD30 over real quick, and totally eliminated cold start diesel mist issues in cold winter months.
True story, took the Troll in for a tune, they thought my donk was down on compression as it cranks so fast.
Tuned up brilliantly, stacks of torque now, EGTs so much lower also.
      I also run lithium auxiliary batteries, 3 X 54 amp, = 162 amp available.
Reason, size. They fit brilliantly over the driver's side rear wheel arch in my Trolls rear storage system.
I'll keep the under bonnet lithium starter battery, it's a bloody good thing, and rear mounted lithium auxiliary batteries, no way AGM, calcium or lead acid will feature again in my Troll, 100% Lithium.

Essentially you've doubled your usable energy storage and expected useful life while halving the weight. Manufacturer states you can connect on parallel should a single 100amp be not enough?
Been 4 years since seriously looked at Li and factory internal fitted BMS and no one had technology to parallel Li back then unless was pure battery cell pack with external BMS setup.
Parallelling Li with BMS that was not designed to do so is how over 4yrs ago caravans and standalone system smoldered and melted everything involved and around them.

So you still getting the max amps of your dcdc charger into the Li deep cycle battery or does the reduce the amps of the input charge?
If amps charge into Li battery is reduced then the major advantage of Li and the charge rate they generally accept to 95% SOC is being lost imho.
I go five days with out running engine and when the dcdc is running I expect the battery to be getting full 30amp charge as much as possible as have about 150amp discharge out of my 200amp Li.
