The referee was paid to help the Korean team to win the matches. The most amazing one, imho, was Totti's second yellow. The referee was dozens of meters away and had his view completely covered: there's no way he could have judged the intensity of the contact to the point where he can be sure that Totti was simulating. Despite this minor fact, he proceeded to sprint 30m to wave the second yellow in his face.

I actually disagree with the Italy game. Some yellow cards were indeed forgotten against Korea, but if you look closely there is absolutely not penalty on Totti and the offside call(or not) on Tomasi is to difficult to see on footage. Spain got robbed 100% though.

Var has definitely made the game more fair and letting play continue even if its offside so a shot can happen. Thanks for an excellent and well-made video!
For anyone who is a critical thinker, and doesn't believe that South Korea "pAiD thE ReFs" in their WC 2002 run to the semifinal, maybe you will find this interesting.
I watched every single game of WC 2002 last summer, scrutinising the officiating. I even made a small blog about it. Anyway - here is what would have happened with VAR in operation for Korea's games vs. Italy and Spain:
    vs. Italy, Moreno
    - early penalty would have been confirmed (FIFA asked the refs to crackdown on holding at this tournament too)
    - penalty would have been retaken, Buffon was off his line
    - the after-the-whistle elbow scene at the 2H was managed sensibly by the ref (warning to both), no cards / intervention
    - Korea would have had a red card at 69' for a brutal foul on Zambrotta
    - the kick-to-the-head on Maldini should have resulted in a yellow card, so no VAR intervention here
    - Totti's SYC would have been supported, FIFA specifically asked refs to punish exactly this kind of diving at this tournament
    - Rattalino would have delayed his flag for Tommasi, and Italy might/probably would have scored a golden goal
    vs. Spain, Al-Ghandour
    - after thirteen minutes, Spain would have been down to ten men after an SFP foul missed by the Egyptian ref
    - the disallowed goal in the 1H would have been confirmed; it was a correct call, the HD broadcast replay shows this (not available on SD broadcast, aka the one that was used at the time)
    - Ragoonath would have (hopefully, though maybe not given how poor this guy was...) delayed his flag and Spain would probably have scored a golden goal
    - Tomusange would have delayed his incorrect flags in extra time, and Spain wouldn't have been denied a (golden) goal if they scored those chances
    - Joaquín's saved penalty would have been ordered retaken
So it's a more mixed picture than the narrative plays out. The real scandal is NOT Byron Moreno or Gamal Al-Ghandour, who (believe it or not), were both very competent refs, but the sending of assistants Tomusange and especially Ragoonath to the Spain game. That was done simply for FIFA politics, because Blatter needed the support of African and Asian associations to have secured his presidential re-election that summer.
I hope somebody finds this comment interesting :)

What about Brazil? Everyone talks (and with reason) about Korea, but Brazil were clearly getting help from refs too in that WC. The match against Turkey was a disgrace, and they also got help against Belgium

    • @mikaelreferee
      @mikaelreferee 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@aleg2716 thanks for the question! How I'd review the officiating of Brazil's matches in 2002
      / vs. Turkey, Kim Young-joo
A weird appointment tbh, I guess that FIFA underestimated Turkey a bit - and politics was a big part of it too.
Chung Mong-joon from S. Korea was a very powerful man inside FIFA since the mid-90s, and his vision was for a WC in Korea with a top class Korean referee taking charge of some matches. You can see exaggerated appointments for Korean linesmen in 1994/98 thanks to Chung's influence (Park Hae-yong was not one of the best in the US, but he still officiated a QF at Don's side; Jeon Young-hyun in 1998 was more-or-less totally incompetent and had a total nightmare in Italy vs. Austria game where he was rejected and sent home).
So the guy Chung wanted to push towards WC 2002 was Kim Young-joo. He even wanted him to officiate at WC 1998, but Chung was defeated because: a) Kim was too weak (his performances at Asian Cup 1996 were reported as disastrous), and, b) Asian refereeing had another strong lobbyist, Farouk Bouzo from Syria, who always pushed for Arab officials to get the best matches, and so Abdulrahman Al-Zaid from Saudi Arabia was chosen instead of the Korean. Al-Zaid had good performances so FIFA made a good choice.
Chung lobbied for Kim to get top matches to prepare him for WC 2002. He officiated hot derbies United States vs. Mexico and Iran vs, Iraq, in addition to the first leg of the AFC playoff in qualification matches so he could gain experience ready for his home WC. On balance, it is hard to say whether FIFA realised that this Brazil vs. Turkey was going to be as hard as it was for the referee, whether they did and thought Kim was up to it, or that it was just a high-profile match which would be easy to referee, so Kim could then officiate a next match, eg. in the knockout round.
As mentioned, this match was EXTREMELY challenging to referee, one of the hardest of the whole tournament. To be fair to Kim Young-joo, for the first eight-five minutes, he did a very solid job indeed. But he totally f---ed it up at the end…
The reason he ended up giving a penalty for Alpay’s holding was that he panicked too much. You can see he initially grabbed a yellow card, before realising that he had to send off Turkey’s defender. After that, he sh*t his pants because he wasn’t really focused on whether the offence was inside or outside the box. So he basically guessed and chose a penalty; completely wrong. :/
The assistant referee, who was actually one of the highest rated by FIFA, Salvadorian Vladimir Fernández, HAD to press the buzzer on his flag and inform his team leader that the offence was outside, but for some reason he kept quiet. Kim lost control of the game after that, and while Hakan Ünsal was correctly sent off for kicking the ball at Rivaldo, the officials made themselves look like idiots by not booking the Brazil player for his ridiculous dive.
Refereeing, like life, can be pretty unfair sometimes. Kim Young-joo had a very good performance for almost all the match, but he basically couldn’t deal with the pressure at the end and made huge mistakes. For all Chung’s work to try and get his top referee, Kim showed unfortunately that he wasn’t up to such a challenging match.
      / vs. China, Anders Frisk
Nothing really happened in this game, the Swede should have sent off a China player for pulling down a Brazil attacker on the way to goal, but he had pity on the Asian debutants, and only gave a penalty.
/ vs. Costa Rica, Gamal Al-Ghandour
Again, very quiet match to ref. Al-Ghandour probably should have sent off two Costa Rica players (at least, definitely one) for dangerous tackles, but on both occasions, he gave no card at all.

      / vs. Belgium, Peter Prendergast
The other big controversy involving Brazil in popular understanding. I don’t want to be the guy who always defends the refs, but from the live sequence, it does look like to me that Wilmots does nudge his opponent before jumping for the header. If that isn’t the case, then a really terrible decision from the Jamaican referee of course.
Prendergast refereed the rest of the game (and his other game, Russia vs. Tunisia) without any real problems, but I think the Jamaican ref was more fortunate that he faced two easy games than being a real top-class official. Probably, infamous Jack Warner wanted to get another appointment for a Caribbean official - and satisified, he lobbied for his compatriot Ragoonath to run the line on Spain vs. South Korea, and we all know how that went…
/ vs. England, Felipe Ramos Rizo
The big decision went against Brazil this time, Ronaldinho being (IMO correctly) sent off for a dangerous challenge on Danny Mills. The Mexican referee was very strict against the worst fouls throughout the competition, and gave a straight red card in all three of his matches. Ramos Rizo wasn’t the fittest, but overall his performance in this game was good.
/ vs. Turkey, Kim Milton Nielsen
The lenient Dane was perhaps the best referee of them all in WC 1998, but four years later, he was much poorer in my opinion. The football was rougher than four years ago, and Nielsen didn’t adapt.
FIFA selected him for this game to avoid controversy, not because they thought he deserved a semifinal. He was way too lenient in this game, more-or-less refusing the issue yellow cards even for blatant shirt pulls, and the players didn’t really respect him.
However, besides not sending off Hasan Şaş for leg-breaker at the end of the game, Nielsen didn’t really face any big calls in this game. I strongly disliked this performance, but neither Turkey nor Brazil could really complain afterwards, which is what FIFA wanted.
      / vs. Germany, Pierluigi Collina
As we know, Collina is considered the best referee in the world by almost everyone - but his performance in the WC final wasn’t very good! While he started well by issuing two yellow cards, he preferred the stay in the background after that, and let the players get away with too much.
More controversial than both the Turkey and Belgium games should be Collina choosing to not send off Cafú after a leg breaking foul on Jens Jeremies! I am sure that the Italian saw the incident clearly, but chose the path of least resistance and didn’t issue Cafú a deserved red card.
That decision changed the final. Brazil were obviously a more technically able team than Germany in 2002, but the game was still nil-nil at the time of Cafú’s foul. Ronaldo scored his first goal two minutes later, and that was that. I am surprised that this clear mistake by the Italian ref was not highlighted more by the media after the game.
      Balance:
The big scandal match was the group stage clash against Turkey, where Kim Young-joo decided the game with an awful decision to award a penalty for Alpay’s holding which was clearly outside the box. Refereeing at the WC is an ultra-high pressure environment, and unfortunately the Korean referee failed at a decisive moment. Even if his performance was really solid before that, the appointment remains questionable IMO.
Besides that, there are only two isolated decisions which stand out to me as being really controversial: Wilmots disallowed goal and Cafú staying on the pitch in the final. If you decide that both of those were clear mistakes, then it would be fair to say that Brazil were extremely fortunate with ref’s decisions at key moments in the tournament.
However, there wasn’t a trend throughout the tournament of gifting Brazil decisions all the way through, and to suggest that even some referees favoured them (like Korea) on purpose, is crazy.
(I guess you didn't want such a long answer, so sorry, but it is a complex question to address, and I hope I did it okay! :))

it’s not just one “mistake” that change the course of the game.
it’s 2 horrific games where the referee was disallowing regular goal, giving red for nothing, not giving red for MMA style elbows.
a lot of the mistakes in the video could still be considered mistakes. it’s just bad luck. referee might just not have seen right.
but korea was pure fifa corruption. just as qatar world cup designation.
and even with var, at least how it is used today. it would probably be not enough because referee has the final decision anyways.
he could still say no it’s offside or it’s a red card for me.
maybe if the mistake is too big he would possibly change the decision. to avoid being assaulted by players, staff or fans.
but in a lot of cases he could still be very damaging.
