    I’m getting a T-shirt made: ‘I had the dirtiest motor that OO Bill Serviced!’ 😂 Yes, 40 years of solidified gunk... props to you for sorting that Bill, thank you very much indeed! No rush for it back so play away for a few weeks my friend. This was by far my favourite model when I was a kid, so I’m absolutely delighted to see it running so sweetly again. Can’t thank you enough. I’ll send you a pack of latex gloves as a thank-you 😁

    Hey Bill nice video, I have the same model and i am thinking of getting the new version when it comes out later this year, although it is a bit expensive they are producing all the various coach types this time. I’ve often seen the real APT at Crewe where it sits in the museum next to the mainline.

    Excellent. By the look of the wear patterns on the wheels etc, it looks like this has had plenty of high speed running. I don't know anything about these models but there must be something worn out or missing that allows the motor bogie to just drop out like that. I can see why you want one 😊👍

    The clips on the power bogie are metal to add weight to the whole bogie but they also provide the drive unit it’s tilting feature as these trains in real life tilted on curves

    Hi Bill. Hoping you can help me on this one. I've just bought an original APT set (amongst a load of other stuff) from a friend and I've serviced the motor, greased and oiled moving parts etc, including the middle gear wheel on the motor spindle and when I test it on the track with the body of the power car on, it screams!!! I've sanded the mouldings off the gears and will now buy a new set of gears to try to eliminate the noise, but is there something I'm missing here?? It's doing my head in!
    Update: The APT rides again, without any screaming! I'd missed the tiny pin that sticks out on the opposite side to the gears, so I oiled it and now it works perfectly, well, slight slippage, but new gears will sort that out.

    • @oobill
      @oobill  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Check the traction tyres. They need to work well on this model so make sure they are in good condition and don't rotate on the wheels.

    • @clivegoodwin8931
      @clivegoodwin8931 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@oobill Hi Bill, thanks for the reply. The tyres are new and the wheels don't turn, although I can hear the gears turning. I think I sanded the mouldings off the gears too hard and made the small gears too thin, so I think they aren't always catching the wheels enough.

    • @oobill
      @oobill  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Check the back to back on the wheels with gears. If it's set too wide the gears won't always engage. Usually between 13.8 and 14.1mm will do. When I sand gears I use a very fine grit paper on a hard flat surface. I only sand enough to get rid of any flash so yes you need to be careful and over sanding could cause problems with gears being loose and not engaging properly.

    • @clivegoodwin8931
      @clivegoodwin8931 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@oobill I measured them at 14.1, but I'll squeeze them in a bit and see if it makes a difference. Thanks again.

    The frames are metal and wear out the plastic bogie retainers on the body, that's why they become loose.

    We're the headlights working? From a faded memory, didn't Hornby supply the Apt with an upgraded armature? I purchased a couple of spares armatures back in the 80s, to this day still unused!

    • @oobill
      @oobill  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No they don't sadly. I have the thing for a few weeks so might look into getting them working but I see no easy way of into the cabs to replace any bulbs without a lot of clips to deal with...

  • @dodgydruid
    @dodgydruid 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think what happened is the brushes became contaminated and broke down turning it all into a morass of crumbled carbon dust, it does happen something gets into the brush material and they become like cheese and wear quadruple quick. Its like when you get a brake pad go bad it turns your nice alloys into a caked on layer of brake material :( Its something that attacks the binder.

    Hi I have created a train service that is probably the biggest train service that's going to run on my small starter layout and I got the the idea from a Video of a train service on the Severn Valley Railway the train service is called The "Pioneer" and my version of the "Pioneer" is a bit too big for my Station halt so some of the passengers will have to walk down to the other end of the Carriages just to get off onto the platform and the carriages are sat waiting for a diesel double header one the diesels is going to be a Class 33 and another TH-camr told that if I get a Lima class 33 he recommends that I get a Lima class 52 western and I thinking about getting either a Lima or a Hornby BR blue Class 50 to couple to the back of the train to assist the class 33 and class 52 double header also if I wanted to I could swap the class 33 with class 50 and have a class 50 double heading with the class 52 western and the class 33 will act as the Banking Locomotive or I could triple head them "NOW THAT WOULD BE A SIGHT A CLASS 52 AND A CLASS 50 DOUBLE HEADING OR THE CLASS 52 WESTERN AND CLASS 50 AND THE CLASS 33 TRIPLE HEADING THAT'S AN EVEN BETTER SIGHT TO SEE JUST THINK OF THE SOUND THE THREE DIESEL LOCOMOTIVES WOULD MAKE AS THEY HURTLE TOWARDS YOU AT 100 MPH PULLING SEVERAL HUNDRED TONS BEHIND THEM" . And I know some of you out there who are die-hard train enthusiasts will disagree with me that Diesel locomotives are just as stunning as the Steam locomotive and I'm probably going to get hate comments but I personally think that Diesel locomotives Deserve a place in the worlds most beautiful and Best locomotive that were ever made. In my opinion I would put the Steam locomotive and the Diesel locomotives in first place a I agree that others are entitled to their own opinion so Feel free to disagree with me and if you are going to send me a hate comment please DO NOT comment death threats or anything that is seen as Anti social behaviour because I will either delete your comment or I will block your or I will report your comments cheers. Lewis 👍
