    Vinny talking about how there's no way to inspect the characters, while the button is on screen, and is one of only four buttons, was a particularly painful blind.

      It's so weird. With the options screen, he shows curiosity and investigates what all the buttons do, and actually, like, reads things. With his eyes. So it's not like he's not capable of doing that. He *could* have had an inkling of curiosity and asked himself "hey what does the button on the left do?" The bizarre vine-blindness seems to be caused by closed-mindedness. He seemingly made up his mind that the chests suck, and gave up on investigating further.

    The style of dungeon crawler with clickable environments and real-time combat that Grimrock games represent, was popularized by a game called Dungeon Master in 1987, so quite a long time after Wizardry 1's release. Westwood Studios made few games like that back in the early 90s, mainly the Eye of the Beholder series and the Lands of Lore game which was voice acted by Patrick Stewart.

      My initiation into those kind of games was Eye of the Beholder. Personally I think Wizardry's turn based combat is better than the real time CRPG's. If I want realtime, it better be an action RPG with good combat. For these CRPG's I prefer a more thoughtful turn based and tactical combat.

  • @tree_tape
    @tree_tape 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +112

    Wow, I did not expect him to play this. For those who don't know, Wizardry was HUGE (like, REALLY FUCKING HUGE) in Japan and it was an enormous influence on JRPGs. The series even continued on in Japan after they stopped making them here, not to mention all the spiritual successors, like games by Experience, The Dark Spire and even Etrian Odyssey.
    Anyway, it's a 1981 game, it's extremely hardcore, and this remake is apparently very faithful, so do NOT jump into a game like this thinking "apparently this game is good, let's try it", expecting to enjoy it like you would a modern game. You really have to know what you're dealing with here, and you have to be interested in exploring what can essentially be described as the game that started it all. If you're a clueless gamer looking for something new to play, this is NOT the game for you.
    There's lots of fun to be had playing this game. Do not misconstrue this as me saying that this game isn't actually fun and is only interesting as a historical relic. All I'm saying is that unless this game is beckoning you, you will not get it, and you'll be disappointed.

    • @nikodem123asdf
      @nikodem123asdf 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      Yeah I was surprised to find a number of these games getting ported to consoles like Saturn and PS1 with really nicely upgraded graphics and even options to play with wireframe if you felt like it.

    • @tree_tape
      @tree_tape 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

      PS: How huge was Wizardry in Japan? Well, look at the Japanese Steam reviews for this game. They almost rival the amount of English reviews. Steam isn't as popular in Japan as it is here, and this game literally does NOT even have a Japanese language option.

    • @jasonerty
      @jasonerty 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      Don't forget that the creators were among the very first Americans to import and bring subtitled anime overseas. Wizardry itself also got an anime ova in the late 80's. It's not hyperbolic to say that the NES port of this game was most Japanese players very first exposure to western high fantasy, and the specific elements and tropes from this game series, such as slimes being the weakest enemy, can STILL be seen in modern Japanese RPG and fantasy works. Look at Konosuba for instance, so many direct references to this game ironically go over most western viewers heads, even though it references a western game, but would be obvious to any Japanese viewer(ex. Explosion/Nuclear blast as the strongest spell, sleeping in the stables, the character literally named Wiz.)
      Always found it kind of strange that this game is so influential on both western and Japanese RPG's and yet it is extremely niche over here and basically venerated as the OG in japan. Hell, before this remake came out, the best version of this game was the japan only PS1 collection of 1-3, it even was playable in english by default.

    If I may suggest (to anyone): Wizardry: Tale of the Forsaken Land on the PS2 is a great entry with incredible character/creature design by Katsuya Terada. You don't want to miss that!! It's closer to this, simpler, than supreme game Wizardry 8, which may be a little daunting (that should be played in your lifetime eventually)(and it has items on the ground to find, Vin ;) ).

    Had NO idea they had remade Wizardry 1. Feels like this dropped out of nowhere, at least to me.
    To add to what others have said, Wizardry along with games like Temple of Apshai and Akalabeth: World of Doom (and Ultima soon after) are the founding fathers of the computer RPG genre. Role-playing video games as we know them wouldn't exist without them. (I think it's also right and fair to name drop Might & Magic and The Bard's Tale despite those series coming a few years later).
    I hope that this remake gets more people interested in the history of role-playing video games. JRPGs have kind of overshadowed it in the popular conscience, which is a shame. Not knocking them by any means, but I'm sure even the devs of the earliest JRPGs would want you to know your roots and learn about what inspired them to make the games that they made.

    Nothing about this game can be considered "generic fantasy" by definition. This - and Ultima I - were THE very first fantasy videogames. There wasn't an established genre from which to pull stock concepts yet. What it was, in 1981, was groundbreaking. Monumental even.

    • @holylolydiver
      @holylolydiver 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Dungeons & Dragons had already existed for 10 years when this game came out, which itself was based on pulp fantasy stories from decades prior to that. These game's MECHANICS aren't original, let alone their settings. You absolutely could've called Wizardry a "generic fantasy setting" in 1981, especially compared to Ultima.

    • @tehcyde
      @tehcyde 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@holylolydiver The settings, I'll grant you. The mechanics were targeted toward a very small, very niche audience; the exact audience ready to make that leap forward from pencil and paper into video games. Which were what I was actually talking about.
      And Gariott released Ultima a whole entire year prior to Wizardry. You can split and torture a hair until it fits your argument as much as you please, but it's quite obvious that's what you're doing.

It's got a fun mechanic where your team can do team attacks like in Chrono Trigger, where it uses both characters action, but it does more damage or hits a wide area or does a status effect. As I was typing out a comment about to suggest Vaporum, he mentioned it in the video, lol. I played both Vaporum 1 and 2 recently, and they were great games that scratched the Grimrock itch since they play *exactly* like Grimrock, except you play as a single character, and you do have the option for a "turn-based" mode where the game will wait on your inputs and give you some time to think. The game is set in a very Bioshock-like steampunk setting, but otherwise you'd probably confuse them as spiritual sequels to Grimrock.
    Vinny, you should give them another shot, I think you'd like them if you're in the mood to play Grimrock. They're by no means perfect games, but I felt like they're worth the time.

    This game looks awesome. I just finished Grimrock 1 and really loved it, and will probably play 2 and check this out. I can't believe I've never touched a grid based dungeon crawler until now

    Is this coming on the Switch? I like to play games like this on the go or just chill. For now, games from Experience devs to satisfy me. God someone should bring back the forsaken land and the sequel to life and make new ones with that style and gameplay.

    I'd like to see him return to this and figure it out if he hasn't already refunded it. This seems like one of those games where you only scratch the surface in the first hour. Compared to Grimrock, Grimrock seems more like a first person Mystery Dungeon game so maybe try that genre. There's also Etrian Odyssey which has the grid movement and turn-based battles like this but more a interactive environment, it's just VERY anime.

    I was born in 1980 but I didn't play any Wizardry until the game Wizardry 5: Heart of the maelstrom for the SNES. I love the series but it's not great streaming material. Wizardry is a grindfest with a death mechanic more punishing than any Dark Souls game. Your party dies on level 7 of the dungeon. Make a new party, level them up as long as the first party, take them to the dungeon, find the corpses of the first party, recover them, pay the huge fee to ressurect them at the temple. Congrats now you have 2 parties.

    • @ThatWanderingDude
      @ThatWanderingDude 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      None of the wiz games are that grindy if you build a good party, depending on if ambush is available or not 3 mages or 1 thief and 2 mages should be more than enough to clear up to floor 9 with no issues. You can also go for creeping coins on floor 2 which give 1500-2000 exp per encounter instantly shooting you up to 5 in a matter of minutes. If you're playing JP KoD or legacy you can find coins on floors 1.

      I got The Quest years and years ago and it's still one of the most enjoyable games I've ever played on my phone. There were a ton of DLC's or extra stories made for it too that I never tried.

  • @blackdragongrief

    I never played the original Wizardry game, but as someone born in 1990 I feel really lucky that my parents were friends with someone who had access to all kinds of DOS games and let my brother and I have them. Thanks to that I did get to enjoy a lot of great dungeon crawlers, CRPG's, and generally strange games. I was actually thinking of installing Lands of Lore or a Might and Magic game earlier today.

    Vinny, why don't you play Return to Zork or even better Zork Nemesis. Wasn't much into Grand Inquisitor, but I wish someone would re make all these and put them on a ps 5 disc w/real time graphics for the Nemesis and the Inquisitor game.

    This looks tedious af now but in the early '80s I would have thought this was amazing. Nostalgia is a lie, thank God for modern gaming.
