This was the first new car I ever bought. The dealer had just received a truck full of them, and I got to crawl around on the trailer to pick out the one I wanted. I chose a red 5 speed.
Wow! My Grandad bought one new, a 1984 Prelude charcoal grey. Manual with a sunroof. Bought from Dalt's Honda, Canada's first Honda dealership. Kept the car until 1989, traded it for a new '89 Prelude Si. Black with manual and power sunroof. We still have that car to this day.
My very 1st car - 1990 Civic Hatchback, manual, 2 door, front rotors / rear drums, carburetor, no power steering, no power windows, no abs, no tachometer on dash! Side mirrors were manually adjustable. However, the headlight beam was adjustable from the cabin with electrical switch. Bought it with 200k miles, sold it with 500k miles on it, and was still running well. With actual snow tires in winter, it was driving up in mountains like a snowmobile. Wish I still have it 😊✌️
@@BryceWomeldurf It's amazing. I look at that car and think Wham, Spandau Ballet, Duran Duran, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Frankie goes to Hollywood etc etc. A timeless design. If the 1984 Honda Prelude were a TV series it'd be Miami Vice. It's right up there with Don Johnson's stylish Ray Bans, lol :)
I had a 92' Corolla before and you CANNOT overstate how light these cars are. They don't have much power, but they don't need it either and you really get a connection to it just driving around. Dead simple and reliable, I couldn't ask for more.
Very nice car Bob! I had an '81 1st gen Prelude, brought it used in 1990 for $800. It was so simple to own. The 2nd gen's have lower seating position and feels like you're in a go- kart. I wish Honda would bring them back.😀
Had the same car in blue. My most favorite car ever . Mine was a manual and I was determined to learn how to drive it. This video was great; oh how I love this car.
What a nice car. The owner took real good care of it. Probably sat inside for most its life. I live in Europe and we do not see them on the road either any more.
A word of warning for those getting excited watching this. Parts are impossible to find for preludes of any year. You have to find used parts and good luck finding them! It’s a bummer because they are a blast to drive. Nobody makes parts for these. I had an 88 and loved it but even if I wanted to restore it it’s not an option at Honda prices. You’ll probably have to pay exotic car pricing to get your hands on the parts necessarily to do a restoration.
@@ap101081 That’s great! I have a hard time believing they sell everything you may need but maybe that last generation or 4th generation is the exception. My 3rd gen 1988 I couldn’t find a transmission speed sensor for it anywhere and it never ran right because of it, always had a check engine light. My two excellent Honda specific mechanics with decades of experience told me preludes were just really hard to get parts for, the best bet is getting lucky at a salvage yard which they also tried to do for me. We also tried online. I loved that car but it was sketchy knowing at any moment it could blow something out that’s not replaceable and at that age it did blow things out being daily driven from time to time. Radiator cracked in half at the top and it blew out a CV axle, otherwise pretty reliable. Ran kinda hot which I suspect was from that world record low hood line that it had for a production car at the time. I could steer it with my pinky, lightest steering I’ve ever experienced, I could even throw the wheel from lock to lock.
Parts for all our favorite cars of the 80's and 90's are getting increasingly difficult to source. There will be people out there that do restore these cars out of love though, love and money anyways.
I owned the exact model and color, from 1984-1987 when I decided to go live overseas. Really enjoyed it for 3 years. Superb handling. It was ahead of its time. This vid brought back memories.
My first car! I had a blue '84 5spd. It was such a great car. Well, until my sister ran a stop sign and got t-boned. Ah what I would give to get ahold of another good one.
I had an '86 Prelude Si. That thing was fun af! By the end, it was just short of 300K miles and the rings were shot. It was like Gorillas in the mist in each morning.
My dad had an 84 'Lude. I was a late 80's baby and he bought a brand new 1993 Taurus SHO when I was about 7, but I definitely remember his red Honda. It was a stick shift, and the back seats felt scrunchy; but there is a memory in my brain of sitting back there watching him row through the gears. I think the Prelude has always been an amazing car. Years later I would sit in the last generation to grace the US, a '99 Type SH, at the North American International Auto Show here in Detroit, and it felt like the perfect car. I didn't want to get out of it honestly. Maybe the last perfect car.
@user-xf3ui4te3w Yeah, you're right. A lot of people disinstalled it, but I would never do that, I think it's part of the appeal, uniqueness, and overall character of the car.
My mother had an '86 2.0 Si. It was (along with the 280ZX) one of the first Japanese cars I really bonded with. The sound of the starter and the seatbelt beep are burned into my memory. I kind of wish Honda would bring back that starter sound as an audio sample that could play when you start an electric Honda.
The first car I ever bought was a 1986 Prelude and I loved it, they are fun little cars even though they don't have any power. I used to work with John and I let him know when he drove that Prelude to work how much I admired it, it's like brand new!
@@euroasianbob9268 That 86 Prelude was the whole reason I started working at Foreign Cars Unlimited. I went there to get a gas tank and ended up getting a part time job too!
Ah... My first new car was a 1985 in that beautiful blue they had (B-33M?). Mine was a 5-speed, no A/C. Drove it for years all over Germany. I never had a problem with it. I miss it so...
My mom had a 1985 Honda Prelude in grey. Hers was also a base model in automatic. I've always wanted one of these but unfortunately it's not in the financial picture for me atm. Great car! If I were to get one I would like to find one with a manual transmission.
My dad bought an 88 Accord at the same time the seller of this Prelude got it from his dad. I remember this car well. Lots of nostalgia here. I'm an EF Civic man myself, and I still drive my 91 to this day. Never gonna sell it!
I had a 1982 Prelude, then a 1983 ( same body as yours). Loved both of those cars. Both with manuals. Neither with power steering. But they, with markups and import fees, were around $11000 if memory serves.
Super video & car. I have just bought a 1984 Prelude, manual transmission with a genuine 2208 miles from new; the car had been off the road since 1987 so I understand. Looking forward to cleaning, detailing and recommissioning the car for road use. Exciting times for both of us!
What memories! That was my exact high school car save for the automatic transmission; and the original owner on mine opted for the graphic equalizer under the radio. Too bad I didn’t have more money back then for better maintenance. Also too bad it was eaten alive by MN road salt. Bring it back, Honda - with ICE!
Love me a Prelude!! Always wanted one back in the day. I used to work at an airport parking lot in the mid/late 80's and when a Prelude came in...usually a 5 speed, it was a treat! Especially if it was a Si. I won't be a buyer for this one....cash short and it's an automatic. Nah, I'd want a 5 speed. Nice find/pickup Bob!!
For a 40 years old car, sure it looks good. If any one has any friends in europe you still can find old parts there.i found some parts in France that you can t find in the states. Good luck.
The prelude is one the first cars that got me into cars. I remembered my cousin owning an early 90s prelude in red when I was really little and thought it was the coolest car ever, and still think it is til this day. I'm shocked that the owner would part ways with it because they're so rare and unique. They really don't make cars like they used to as the youtuber said. Reason being is because cars nowadays are too expensive, too high tech, and aren't made to stand out anymore. Everyone just wants to copy eachother which takes away from the car's character and that's what cars nowadays lack is character. Wish car manufacturers would bring that back, but who knows what thw future of car manufacturering would hold.
My first car was an 86 Si 5-Speed, Torquey and the Gears were close. Thing was great off the line. I embarassed so many with that car even newer DOHC hondas. Got me to School and work no problem even delivered Pizza for 2 years with it. Sold it with 286,000 miles and it passed smog with flying colors.
I had a '85 1.8 12v in the days with a 5 speed manual. Great cars if you keep an eye on possible rust beneath the rear window and the wheel arches. Realy sporty, economical and comfortable. Came with electric windows, sunroom etc... The power steering was soo light even a fly could steer it. My sister had the '86 2.0i 16v model. That was something else though. That one was a rocket. I stupidely sold it for a few bucks years later with only 88000km on it. Should have kept it. It wasn't that practical in the back when you have a baby crawling around...

That is in excellent condition for the year. I prefer older cars like this , noting fancy not much to fail or break .. I’m surprised it has a sunroof for the year, and it will continue to last longer when taken care of. Hondas can last forever. 👍
In 1991 I bought an 89 Prelude S with duel carburetors. Loved that car. Unfortunately, HWY 165 in NM got the best of it, or I got the best of it!😂❤ That's a non paved mtn pass.
I love the older pre 2005 toyota/hondas. The newer ones just don't drive the same. Waiting for the day you find a 1989 Toyota Camry with a 2 Liter motor with low miles. Hardly see those on the road.
I almost bought a 1983-84 Honda Prelude silver was automatic had 349,800km In 2001. Had a $3k stero in it ! Was $2,900 I had a mechanic check it out. But my mechanic said run! It's a true beater max value $1,000 only because of stero. The engine transmission are on their way out! But it did drive nice!
My first car was a 3rd gen 1990 Prelude Si, yall aren’t too far from me if the price isn’t absurd. Parts are nearly impossible to find especially for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gens
I’d like to second that. My 3rd gen 1988 was impossible to find parts for. I’m passionate about this issue because that was one of my favorite cars of all time and it was amazing to drive, but I couldn’t restore it because even the best mechanics can’t find parts for them. It was sad. That’s why you don’t see them on the road anymore. Nobody wants to blow out parts daily driving the ones that still run.
this is meant to be check this. I just got home from work I work at carmax and it's on S Broadway in Littleton Colorado due to the older population here I'm always getting older vehicles getting sold to us. I wish I had money yo buy em all. I signed papers with a customer born in 1922. 1922 😮
Yes, but also they are non interference engines. I blew out the belt on my 1988 on the highway one day. Thought it had been changed, turned out to be original. New belt and it’s like nothing ever happened.
@@foellerd That's good to know. Gives you a little more confidence to "push the envelope" if you're unsure if it had been changed. It may cause a little inconvenience if it goes, but not as costly of if it was in an interference engine.
I had a beat up black 89 prelude si automatic that My father found it had a large dent in the back corner and one of the fog lights was broken and the moonroof when it was closed leaked when it was closed on rainy days. I found a better red one but he didn't want to help me get that one. Another cheap move on my father's part.
Yeah I forgot they made the si with an optional automatic transmission. Those are actually pretty rare nowadays. But the si was also fuel-injected which is much better than the carbuereted motor that my mom had in her former 1985 Honda Prelude.
My only problem with that car is the automatic trans, which were not Honda's strong suit at that time - I'm not sure they ever really got them right before they switched to CVTs. I was working at a Honda dealer in 1991 when a customer brought a 1983 Prelude in with a coolant leak and no start, which turned out to be a blown head gasket. It had 110K miles so they didn't want to spend the money to fix it, so I bought it for $400, rebuilt the engine and drove it for another 100K miles. At the end I used to commute an hour to work... it was 60 miles one way but only half of that was on the highway, but I regularly cruised 90-100 mph (I was still young and foolish) and that car just hummed along like it was nothing. Those usually rusted in the quarters because dealers frequently installed chrome fender lip trim that were attached sheetmetal screws... the instructions said to use touch up paint on the holes but that was rarely done.
My family had a 1983 automatic bought up North in Rhinelander Wisconsin at time...the whole underside, wheel wells and engine area was sprayed with coating from a local N. Wisconsin business. It last quite a long time in Chicagoland area Winters - amazing ride in that car!!
Blown head gasket doesn’t surprise me. They had incredibly low hood lines which gave the engine very little space to vent and soak up fresh air from the grill. My carbureted 1988 always ran hot at low speeds. It cracked a radiator on a hot day once, spilled the coolant everywhere.
@@MauiWauiPineappleExpress I was a Honda mechanic at the time, and saw loads of rusted fenders where the chrome lips were screwed in, but very little rust anywhere else. It might be hard to believe, but other people can have a different experience than you, and they might actually know things that you do not.
SOLD!

Unfortunately, HWY 165 in NM got the best of it, or I got the best of it!😂❤ That's a non paved mtn pass.
earned a new follower. next time I'm in KS I shall take a trip to say heyyo
they dont make em like they used to , i have a 94 awd toyota previa and i dont ever wanna get rid of it
MSRP on these was between 10 and 12K back in the day.
Cars from that era had characters❤
I love the older pre 2005 toyota/hondas. The newer ones just don't drive the same.
Waiting for the day you find a 1989 Toyota Camry with a 2 Liter motor with low miles. Hardly see those on the road.
I almost bought a 1983-84 Honda Prelude silver was automatic had 349,800km In 2001. Had a $3k stero in it ! Was $2,900 I had a mechanic check it out. But my mechanic said run! It's a true beater max value $1,000 only because of stero. The engine transmission are on their way out! But it did drive nice!
Great find? I’m jealous.
The 2nd Gens are the best looking Preludes, imho. And, one of the best looking cars of the 1980s.
Im sure they made alot of those but I havnt seen one on the road in a while, nice find Bob or i guess it rolled in lol
Nobody can get parts to keep em on the road as daily drivers.
Love this. Do you ever get 4th gens up for sale?
this is meant to be check this. I just got home from work I work at carmax and it's on S Broadway in Littleton Colorado due to the older population here I'm always getting older vehicles getting sold to us. I wish I had money yo buy em all. I signed papers with a customer born in 1922. 1922 😮
Honda was great decades ago. Today not so much
I was totally into this until I saw the automatic.
Thank God it's an Automatic, way smoother ride.
Coming soon too to the Car Wizard channel... 😅🤣😂
Best honda years!
Great car. What a nice piece of history. Make sure the timing belt had been changed...think that era Honda was every 60K?
Yes, but also they are non interference engines. I blew out the belt on my 1988 on the highway one day. Thought it had been changed, turned out to be original. New belt and it’s like nothing ever happened.
@@foellerd That's good to know. Gives you a little more confidence to "push the envelope" if you're unsure if it had been changed. It may cause a little inconvenience if it goes, but not as costly of if it was in an interference engine.
clip starts @4.30
So scared of what they might do to the new prelude.
Automatics are fine and these are rust buckets from the factory, had nothing to do with installed chrome fenders.
@@foellerd I forgot to mention that it had a leaky radiator, so I had that re-cored while I rebuilt the engine.
Did you get a safety inspection on it before you bought it?
Have you had to get the engine or transmission or just regular maintenance?
The Wizard sent me. LMAO
