Now I understand why my parents wouldn’t allow me to watch this show, when I was younger. They didn’t tell me the explanation directly when I was younger, saying that I would understand when I’m older. I’m older now, and it is truly depressing just how “horrid” the treatment his parents enacted on him. The favoritism, neglect, emotional abuse, it is heart-breaking and rather jarring.
As a teen with PDA autism with a neurotypical little sister, I have so much empathy for poor Henry. Lil bro is trying his best, and I can confirm, a lot of parents DO genuinely dislike their "less perfect" kids.

I feel Henry’s pain. My mom disapproved of me going to college to study zoology and Animal Care as I have always wanted to look after animals and help save them from extinction but my mom always called me pathetic and tried convincing me to get a job that isn’t beyond my capabilities

Kids know when they're not the favorite and not equal to the other child. I can still remember when I was a kid hanging out with my step brother. His grandmother took us our shopping, and even though we agreed to take turns sitting in the front seat (big clot with kids that age) when it came to be my turn she wouldn't let me because he's "older". He was only 29 days older than me. It doesn't sound like a big deal. But I think that was the moment I realized that he was more loved than me in that household.
Don't forget that one episode where horrid Henry somehow makes Peter “cry” for simply eating his beans AND getting Henry in trouble for it. Not just that, but horrid Henry snickered believeing that it WAS a bad thing
I had a whole debate over the problem with this show with my teacher who refused to accept that the “its a product of its time” doesn’t work when the show ended in the 2000s. I tried to tell her it didn’t matter that it was a show as this show is being viewed by children who might be in abusive households and is having this kind of problem normalized

I’m almost jealous, I also live in a situation where my parents are somewhat normal, but also extremely emotionally abusive, everything I do is wrong, I get punished over little things, sometimes the consequences of little things are bigger than the consequences of big things. This reminds me a lot of one of my friends childhood, my friend probably had more of peters perspective, while her older sister had more of Henry's perspective, their mother was narcissistic and had a few mental problems, while their dad was disabled and medically sick, my friends older sister got treated exactly like Henry, while my friend got peters treatment, eventually they escaped through their parents getting divorced, and now they're mentally healthy and have a good relationship, but don't have a relationship with their mother, because they lived with their father after the divorce

A couple of things from when i was a kid watching this, one i always had the thought his mum stayed to make sure Peter (who clearly wasn't hurt) is ok, instead of staying with Henry who is in the hospital. Also, i always had the thought that Henrys parents were the ones who gave him the nickname Horrid Henry (the same goes for Peter), and they were making it feel like Henry was Horrid that everyone thinks so, and that Peter was always the perfect child. This was from the way they treat both kids, with the fact his parents MADE him do something he didn't want (aka ballet) and refusing to let him do something he wanted (karate, music etc), but if Peter wanted to do something new, they're fine with it, they gave Peter a musical instrument but won't let Henry get one
This one is a stretch. The next scene the parents were walking down the hall with the doctor -- they were called away to talk about Henry's review or whatever hospitals call it
I'd like to point out there were some moments that Silly Simon was actually good to henry, so i would say the mum is worse than the dad. I feel so bad for him, Francessca will end up in a nursing home. And to be honest, i dont hate Peter as much since it's obvious he has golden child syndrome because of the parents.
Did anyone notice that Henry’s hair is always messy? And peters hair is clean... I don’t think he gets his hair done so that leads to the mom some moms do their kids hair so am I the only one who sees it?
My mom was like this and when I got older (adult age) I told her I would like to spend time with her more and I thought I’d get the treatment my sister got if I tried harder I thought. She still never wanted to be near me once I left home she stopped calling unless it was to tell me how bad I was. I tried talking to my sister and explaining why I felt resentment when I was child and explained it wasn’t her fault it was how we were raised. But now she and my mom call me the monster because of how I felt as kid. My mom likes to say she put a roof over my head so I need to be grateful and my sister says the same thing about my mom. So I lost them both. And my dad stopped talking to me because he doesn’t wanna deal with any of this drama anymore. It gives him a headache he’s disabled. No one even called me on my birthday but my mom told everyone she did.
Sounds like my household 😂, my whole family have disowned me as I had a mental breakdown because of them, tbh i feel so much better off without them I do miss them really badly but they don’t want me I don’t want them toxic behaviour I know but I’m not wasting my breath on them, but sorry to hear this
Hell I'm an adult but when I was in the hospital for a post dental infection that required surgery my mom and dad stayed with me despite me telling them they didn't have to (glad they did though. Had some poor excuses for nurses so it was nice having my mom around to help me)
Finally someone said it.Henry is just a mistreated child who wants attention from his parents while Pitter often pretended to be a poor little boy who was abused by his brother.I always found Pitter's character extremely annoying who is trying his best to be the only favourite child.I mean Henry is troublemaker but he is at least honest about his dreams and passions unlike Pitter who is just pretending to be the best child ever.
You see some parents, the demand respect from their kids what's at the same time they're not respecting the kids and their dreams so how would they expect that respect to be reciprocal. If Henry becomes a a very successful rockstar where is his parents hit rock bottom the barely getting by on money do they really think Henry will actually help them they've lost their privileges to be parents honestly.

I feel like I relate to "Horrid: Henry a lot, because even though I'm not the oldest sibling, all the blame gets put onto me and I get in trouble all the time because that's how I get attention from my dad who yells at me all the time and calls me names all the time because of me getting in trouble all the time, but he puts all of his focus on my older brother(because he was the one that he wanted out of us two), and now I'm grounded because of telling him about a band thing for over a week and he was gaslighting me saying he didnt know until after it ended and he is now saying that he hates me because I'm starting to act like my uncle which he hates, and I don't know what to do anymore, I've tried to be like my older brother, just so I can get some love and respect from him, and nothing, I tried doing my own thing, and I would get yelled at for doing that

If you can't differate imperfection from child abuse, stay away from families with children.

Everyone is talking about the abusive family, why not the abusive writers? I can see that this probably isn’t just tough love however even if it is tough love you should never yell at a child as it can scare them and effect they’re self esteem. Henry’s parents are probably really old fashioned if they if they think that yelling at him is better than physically hurting him or calling him names as his parents hardly call him names except for telling him not to be horrid rather than he is horrid or the time his mum called him a horrid boy.

I believe both parents hate henry for his faults and only see the bad in henry. Both parents only care about peter and never henry.
There's a lot of moments where Simon shows a lot of familial bond to Henry, the biggest example is the go kart episode.
You realise that he is a deadbeat stoner dad towards henry and he treats henry just as badly as his wife does towards henry.
Peter is the golden child while Henry just wants to be loved and appreciated

Children in abusive households don't even recognize they're being abused. I can see that this probably isn’t just tough love however even if it is tough love you should never yell at a child as it can scare them and effect they’re self esteem. Henry’s parents are probably really old fashioned if they if they think that yelling at him is better than physically hurting him or calling him names as his parents hardly call him names except for telling him not to be horrid rather than he is horrid or the time his mum called him a horrid boy.
