One of the best jokes I ever heard came from John Cooper Clarke during a solo poetry performance in East London in '81. No way I could do it justice trying to retell it, especially because it was also one of the longest jokes I've ever heard. I'm still amazed he was able to hold such a rowdy audience as long as he did that night.

Beautiful! maybe music remains exciting after so many listens because it's an emotional experience. unlike a joke, a Wiki page, or even a documentary; an intellectual asset to be 'acquired' once. You can take a drug multiple times, go to the park multiple times, and play a song multiple times

I agree with you. And yet - just playing Devil's advocate here - it could be argued that hearing a joke is an emotional experience too. Amusement is an emotion right? I think it's because music is much more complex than a joke. There are just so many elements to it, and all a joke has is language and meaning. Music has rhythm, style, melody, harmony, "feel", lyrics sometimes, etc. etc. etc.

Art may have no intrinsic value today because much of it is empty, uninspired crap, and we are forced to create value through fear of being labelled as someone with no idea of what art is by lots of art verbiage spewed out by critics intent on maintaining a position in the art world, that sells the work and gives it value in the mind of duped idiots who don't have the courage and trust in themselves to simply say 'this is not art, it's crap." So, I disagree again, Brian.
