The Ideal Workweek, According To Science
Scientists have studied the working schedules of the greatest artists, philosophers, and thinkers in history-and they rarely look like a 40-plus-hour workweek. Instead, many of humanity’s greatest achievements were produced by people who worked no more than four hours a day.

The way I see it is that even paintings express emotions and even have one to reflect on what he sees. And since we are all different, everyone can end up with his inspiration from it or having his/her view on it. We can all absorb inspiration from other artists and end up creating our original works. So, therefore, there is a very deep function.

Phil Spectre derided Brian Wilsons work because he "cheated" to make his wall of sound by editing parts together rather than do it all in a live take. I think it comes from a kind of jealousy, whenever a new technique is learnt the old guard are going to brand it unfair to protect their egos in a sort of "shit, they improved my sound with less effort and expense...but mine is still better because I had to walk up hill everyday to make it...right?"

Brian Eno did not play a critical role in inventing the idea of the studio as an instrument. Music concrete artists like Pierre Schaeffer and later composers like Morton Subotnick can be credited with that...but Eno is cool and that is a very nice compliment...albeit a little over the top.

Art may have no intrinsic value today because much of it is empty, uninspired crap, and we are forced to create value through fear of being labelled as someone with no idea of what art is by lots of art verbiage spewed out by critics intent on maintaining a position in the art world, that sells the work and gives it value in the mind of duped idiots who don't have the courage and trust in themselves to simply say 'this is not art, it's crap." So, I disagree again, Brian.

i've always thought that a primary feature of 'good art' is the interplay between medium and message - i.e. how the medium is used to either amplify or enhance the 'message' or 'content' of the work itself ... you can apply this to just about any medium

Oh I'm old enough to remember people saying using synthesizers was 'cheating' & that they weren't 'real' instruments! Remember Queen used to have a statement on all their album covers about no electronic instruments or tonalities were recorded onto their albums? - Then remember they ended up making tracks like Radio Ga Ga which is SMOTHERED in synthesizer! LOL. Nowadays you just don't hear these assertions any more & Kraftwerk have gone from being a frowned upon weirdos to extremely highly regarded artists because they knew right from the start that snyths usually free expression rather than impede it!

The funny thing is Eno usually throws out a highly computerized / software based approach to most of his stuff because he's good at making organic imperfect material sound 'authentic'. 95% of his output sounds a long way away from Cubase & the like.

One of the best jokes I ever heard came from John Cooper Clarke during a solo poetry performance in East London in '81. No way I could do it justice trying to retell it, especially because it was also one of the longest jokes I've ever heard. I'm still amazed he was able to hold such a rowdy audience as long as he did that night.
