I'm not really sure about Ascari. Let's bear in mind he wasn't driving an F1 car on that fateful day at Monza. He borrowed a Ferrari 750 Sport from his friend and colleague Eugenio Castellotti. You'd argue that he made that attempt just to overcome the shock of his crash at Monaco few days before and that this specific crash would have never happened in this alternate universe. Still, with his system he would have been banned by F1, as he achieved his first title in 1952, but not by motor-racing as a whole. Especially for an informal session. That being said, I share with you all my hope that, at least in this parallel reality, the great Alberto Ascari did actually safely survive. He is deeply missed.
I love the storylines in this, I love learning about the lesser-known non-champions of the past decades Piquet’s struggle to win a title was especially unexpected 😂
Yeah it's crazy that you can miss out on 2 of your real titles. I was expecting a couple like Phil Hill or Keke Rosberg but not Piquet. Glad I could shed some light on some driver who don't get talked about as much. F1 has a lot of history but obviously some names are a lot more famous than others
Obviously, Piquet voluntarily dropped back from 1st to 3rd in the final GP of 1983, because in reality that was all he needed to be champion. Presumably he wouldn't have dropped lower than 2nd in this alternative reality.
What a great concept for a video. It makes you think about all the drivers who never had their moment of glory while competing alongside the all-time greats, and then, of course, the sad reality of fatal accidents when looking at these alternate timelines.
This video is amazing. I would never have the patience to do something like this. Mr.V is one of the few remaining F1 content creators still to have unique and original content.

I’m sorry Mr V. but you’re not the first one to do this. Someone on Reddit keeps track of this weekly with all data leading back to the start of championship. It’s called the elimination championship and has all spreadsheets available for free, including some fun stats such as new amount of wins, races before championship, etc. Still I’m glad to get your take on it as your look at all stories is very fun and a lot more interesting than a load of spreadsheets.
I found that out yesterday tbh. It's a cool concept which honestly makes more sense written down so I imagine theirs is better, but as you say I was more interested in the story side of it

the amount of work you have done for this video is just amazing. To recalculate some 10x races every year for few years is incredible when also the number of races go up almost every year. Big Salute for this kinda content, I thought it would be boring because you started in the 1950s( bc for me I honestly don't really know any drivers before 2000) but it was super interesting to watch. Keep it going man
I'm just 10 mins in but i already have to say, that this is the most interesting and entertaining F1-Video I have seen so far. Great idea and I'm sure a lot of work, thank you very much! 😊
Fantastic stuff, thanks. And an idea for a future video: multiple champions per year. Plenty of times when a season ends, there is always talk of someone "deserving" a title more than the actual champ. Well, what if you could have two or three champions for some seasons? Like 2014 both Hamilton and Rosberg, 2006 both Alonso and Schumacher (as Schumacher arguably lost the title with the engine failure). Purely subjective and not at all controversial topic, but should make for fun speculation and seeing someone like Prost grab 10 titles would be interesting.
Anyone above a given amount of points gets declared as a sharer of the title and retired for the rest of the season. That way teams have to show the car is really good and not only fast with a specific driver
Hey, love your videos, great content! I had an idea couple of years ago: what if we calculated the champion of the year by the total distance covered? Alternatively would the outcome change if we add up race results? Eg. Senna won by 30s in Suzuka, but Prost won by 31 in Brazil? Would the outcome be different if you consider the finishing time for all drivers in all races?
Thank you, that's high praise. I was tempted to make this one HUGE 1hour+ chart party style thing but then I remembered I have no idea how to go those graphics
7:55 those variety of colours😍, we need that back (not looking at alpine, haas, merc and the teams that arent ferrari, redbull (yes redbull does have this very dark blue-purple-ish coulour on their car even tho you can barely see it) and williams)
Only seen this today after part 2 coming up as a suggestion and watching that. Very enjoyable amd interesting. I once worked out if the old numbering system was still in use what the numbers would be like. Like you i did it cos i got bored one night and also prefereed the old numbering system.
@MrVsGarage I have an other idea for a long time: Drivers are not connected to teams. Instead, they do the first 12 races in each teams. Then, the pilots with the most points will do the rest 12 races in the top 3 teams. This way, no pilot will dominate for 5 years just because a team got one technical rule better than the rest. And we get to find out who is the best pilot. And the best team still wins.
You saying the Swedish GP made me sad as a Swede. The dream would be that they built a new track and that we would get a Swedish GP again but thats probably not gonna happend
I'm baffled to see how many seasons Piquet had to wait to become champion. Mansell too, I can't wait to watch part 2. Great stuff, very original and entertaining!
Great concept and looking forward to the next part. Imagine what would have happened in situations where drivers collided with someone who would now be banned and how that could’ve shaken up the results. Similar to Ocon’s win in Hungary where Bottas (who I’m assuming wins a championship) is no longer around to take out a quarter of the grid.
Great video! Just spotted 1 little error. According to your own commentary Jackie Stewart and Clay Regazzoni would both have been the "first ever" rookie champion. I think you forgot your earlier mention of Jackie Stewart haha :P
Interesting thought experiment. It is highly possible that unknown new rookies could have shaken up the title hunts in many ways. Grabbing championships themselves after a few seasons or sewing chaos on track, like colliding with somebody who otherwise could have won a championship. The driver market would have been vastly different altogether, as McLaren’s MP4/4 could have still won just as many championships, but with a different veteran driver every year. Or without the input of some drivers to develop a car, because they’d already been banned, some dominant cars never get developed. Schumacher for example wouldn’t be there to help Ferrari build a car that dominated so many seasons.
As a spreadsheet fanatic, long time F1 lover and a fan of great videos I have to like this. We also need to know how many times Hulkenberg has been on the podium! This alternative time line might have a driver that never got the title and because of that participate in the most races end up being the stats leader on a lot of metrics. Will you release all the data?
Crap!! Never would have known if you hadn't pointed that out, the picture was tagged as 1988. Well, at that wasn't driven either as Prost Senna were still banned so the point is still half correct.
1986 - Mansell had a tyre blowout, A steward at that race sometime later asked Mansell what would have happened if he'd spun the far or put it in the wall, Mansell replied "I would have crashed", to which the steward said "Yes, but you would also have been World Champion as we would have had to red flag the race and on countback you would have had the points" Small margins.
You technically become champion after the season when the FIA gives it to you, not the moment you become mathematically impossible to catch. Either way, I think this is the respectful way to mark it
Very excellent stuff. Wonder if any real life team orders - scupper a driver in this "Juan Anne-Dunn" drivers championship. Kyalami 83, Piquet really dialed it back on track, as he only needed that postion to do for that big nosed little French dude. (Only kidding, Alain!) I'd kind of like to know a bit more on the individual seasons - Odd drivers who got weird wins once you get rid of the championship winning champagne addicts!
I expect we'll see some interesting champions come the 00's and 10's when Schumacher, Vettel and Hamilton are removed. I assume it'll be names like Fisichella, Montoya, Kubica, Barrichello, Massa, Sato, probably Heidfeld and Wurz. But after that... man. Its gonna be interesting
I cant believe you didnt track 70 years of alternate driver transfers. Great video!

Crazy that that tire blowout cost Mansell the title in this universe too
I would love if you did the same thing, but WITH potential transfers, even if you start in 2010 to simplify it for you
Just came across the video, awesome job!
Just wanted to point out you put a picture of the 1989 MP4/5 (notice the airbox) instead of the 1988 MP4/4.
Crap!! Never would have known if you hadn't pointed that out, the picture was tagged as 1988.
Well, at that wasn't driven either as Prost Senna were still banned so the point is still half correct.
1986 - Mansell had a tyre blowout, A steward at that race sometime later asked Mansell what would have happened if he'd spun the far or put it in the wall, Mansell replied "I would have crashed", to which the steward said "Yes, but you would also have been World Champion as we would have had to red flag the race and on countback you would have had the points"
Small margins.

I'd say Cevert wouldn't be a posthumous champion as he won the championship before his accident
You technically become champion after the season when the FIA gives it to you, not the moment you become mathematically impossible to catch. Either way, I think this is the respectful way to mark it
The four wheel regulation probably excludes the six wheelers then
The wording of the rules was definitely changed before the 70s so there was a grey area
Please could you do a summary like this but for reality (covering the top three drivers from each year)?
You win the championship, then next year you have to move to another team. Simply and competitive
I bet Vettel would love this video.

Very excellent stuff.
Wonder if any real life team orders - scupper a driver in this "Juan Anne-Dunn" drivers championship. Kyalami 83, Piquet really dialed it back on track, as he only needed that postion to do for that big nosed little French dude. (Only kidding, Alain!)
I'd kind of like to know a bit more on the individual seasons - Odd drivers who got weird wins once you get rid of the championship winning champagne addicts!

7:05 sounds like a new challenge for max
I expect we'll see some interesting champions come the 00's and 10's when Schumacher, Vettel and Hamilton are removed. I assume it'll be names like Fisichella, Montoya, Kubica, Barrichello, Massa, Sato, probably Heidfeld and Wurz. But after that... man. Its gonna be interesting
I can't wait for part 2 now. 😅
