    Don't be like me:
    * Browses a channel introduced by Tom Scott and Wendover when I should be working
    * Finds a video about time management and realizes I need these tips badly
    * Puts it in "watch later"

    This was honestly a really good video that somewhat forced me to relook at how I manage my time. I'm currently living by "just do what is due tomorrow", a horrible motto honestly. Thanks for the tips and for giving a look into how you plan and manage things!

    Careful when blurring out text to try to hide it. That process can be undone / isn’t perfect. Cover it instead I’d say

    knowing how to delegate is such an invaluable skill that it has definitely taken me way to long to get even a little good at. but so important, thank you for mentioning it!

    I've already finished my PhD (chemistry) and I strongly believe that self-organisation is one of the most important skills that you learn during your studies if you're not already a natural. Using time-managing apps and a convoluted calender isn't, in my opinion, something anyone should aspire to. It's ok to get started, but in the end a calender should only contain scheduled meetings and deadlines. As a PhD, you're meant to be able to multitask and self-organise easily without outside help. But then, I might of course be biased - every field is different of course.

      Glad you found something that works for you! Task management apps and a “convoluted” calendar is my preferred method of self-organization. 🙂

    I try to self organize, but it seems like I'm ALWAYS fighting against the clock. School work just takes so long no matter how I organize my life. I remember spending 8 hours a day on it last semester. Doing math/physics/coding for that long is mentally exhausting and that's before I factor in time spent in classes and my job. It sounds like you have a ton more stuff crammed into your schedule on top of that. By the end of last semester I could almost physically feel my mental state deteriorating. How do you stay sane though all of that?

    • @JordanHarrod
      @JordanHarrod  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Delegation and taking on one thing at a time are probably the two biggest factors that keep me sane (also my therapist) - for example, I didn't do anything GSC related this week other than send a couple emails because other board members were working on their own projects. Also, taking regular vacations, which I'm currently not doing because of COVID - normally I take about two weeks off over the winter holidays and two weeks during the summer, both right after the semester ends.

    All the things that went through my head as I watched this (a couple days after opening a tab to watch it)...
    Didn't I have a folder for apps that could help me organize things? Where was that folder? Man, I need to clean up my folders. That's a big project. I should go for a walk... oh, you have ADHD too! They won't give me meds for ADHD because it would make my OCD worse. I wonder what I could accomplish on meds. I really should do some tutorials. I've got a couple ideas for harmonica tutorials that I need to shoot. What were those apps again? I should go for a walk but people will be outside now... OCD... Covid... Okay, maybe the tabs. D&D? Being president of the club at my first college was what got me to bomb out of college! Maybe I should play some minecraft. I can go for a walk later. I have a brownie in a mug mix. If I go for a walk I can have a brownie as a reward, or maybe it would work better as a motivator.
    Organize folders, organize organizing, minecraft, walk... what order. The AC is on, too hot to walk. I did, at least, do all my harmonica group admin stuff on three groups and help people with some questions, so the day isn't a total loss.

    I appreciate your frankness regarding ADHD. If you don't mind me asking, when were you diagnosed, and especially what lead to the diagnosis? (Again, if this is too personal, please feel free not to answer.) You are clearly a very impressive person, and are able to get so much done. I guess I am asking, because I have issues with concentration and focus at times, and have wondered if I fit into this sort of categorization, although a well defined coding task is something I can stay very focused on (I'm a professional developer). Again, no worries if you'd prefer not to answer, I'm just curious.

    • @JordanHarrod

      I was actually diagnosed in March, so I'm pretty new to medication and formal ADHD treatment! It had never occurred to me that I had ADHD though - I'd had a lot of issues with fatigue and anxiety around certain tasks, procrastination, weekly burnout cycles, as well as a "mental fog" at certain recurring times of day. For a while, my doctor thought it was a blood sugar issue (I'd been prediabetic as a kid, and continue to have some blood sugar problems) but my therapist (who I'd been seeing for about six months after switching from a different therapist) was the one who had the lightbulb moment and sent me to a psychiatrist for an evaluation, who pretty much immediately agreed that I had ADHD-Primarily Inattentive.
      I'd say that in some ways, it helped me do a lot of things, but not necessarily in an efficient way, and definitely not in a way that was good for my mental health - I'd burn out pretty much every week because long/abstract/poorly-defined tasks would make me anxious, because I'd struggle to focus on them. Getting a diagnosis has been helpful for getting more targeted Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and I'm also in group therapy for perfectionism, which helps me create new strategies to get through the week without burning out all the time.
      My usual recommendation to people who are curious is to start by seeing a good therapist and bring up your concerns - it might be ADHD, it might be something else, and the only one who is really qualified to figure that out is a psychiatrist. (Plus, I think everyone should see a therapist - mental health is important whether or not you have an actual medical condition!)

      Thanks! I talked to my general practitioner about talking with a therapist, but they are in very high demand, and it's hard to get onto someones schedule here in the Seattle area. Thanks again!

    This is one of the reasons I don’t think I’m ever doing a PhD. Well, this and my distaste for academia (no beef with the sciences but whoever comes praising academia in my field of study-political “science” and international relations-needs to set their priorities straight).
    My whole purpose in life is to write 2,500 words a day and I can’t even do that. This amount of PhD work will literally kill me. But man, do I need to get my life together. Nice video to remind me to prioritize my time.

    • @JordanHarrod

      Yeah, I don't recommend PhDs for everyone - I enjoy it, but it's a lifestyle that is understandably unappealing to some (especially considering how much we get paid). 😅 I also do a lot more than the average PhD student, so I've had to learn to build a schedule that keeps me on track.

      Oooooh fun question - Probably something where I develop the software and she does the hardware. Like, I develop the VR/AI software for a weird game and she develops the headset that has physical items that you interact with during the game.

    Could you train a neural network to de blur image files? ... Or at least train it to recover text from blurred images... Probably...
    Generate a script that wright text with different fonds and save it as a clean image and blurred (maybe more than one type of blur) and train on them...
    Sounds like a fun project.

    • @JordanHarrod
      @JordanHarrod  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep - this is actually a concern with apps that blur faces (ex. Signal) with the intention of protecting the privacy of the people in the photo. You can use less complicated methods than a neural network to de-blur faces if you know enough about the technique used to blur.

    • @Petch85
      @Petch85 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JordanHarrod I had not yet tried the face blur function i signal, but well it blurred my face :-) I guess that the blur function basically is a 2D averagenig function.
      Thus data should be lost. But they might be able to guess what are the most likely outcome. Also the nok that i has to be a hole number between 0-255... Maybe if one added some random noise to the averingen, and used many pixels, but in the end it would probably be easier to just set alle values to 0.
      I might want to look up some blur algoritmes and program the into python. it seems easy to blur compared to finding af face in an image.
      Maybe I should look up safe blur algoritmes too. Thanks for the inspiration.
