Hey, two things that I find really useful for this are:
    1. Interspersing stretches of the technical stuff with naps, talking with friends and other non-Internet activities
    2. Explaining the technical stuff to myself after reading bits of it

I CANNOT work/ study with other people. It just is not gonna happen for me. Other people = social and my brain compartmentalizes that from work.

This is exactly how I am. I'm preparing to enroll at Columbia University to get a degree in psychology. However, my ADHD makes it extremely difficult for me to concentrate. My mind works in the same way as a mind map. I'll read something, and then that something will lead me to something else, and then that something else will lead me to something else, and then I'll forget where I was in the first place. It's quite aggravating. I've never discovered anything that works for me when it comes to staying on track. I'll give yours a shot and see whether it works for me. Thank you very much!

Very relatable for me. How did you solve the problem?

For procrastination, what really works for me is to work with it, and find something to procrastinate from. For example, I have an assignment that I am struggling to start, and I have found myself playing video games rather than getting on with my assignment. What I do is find something else that I don't want to do, like tidy under my bed. I either spend fifteen minutes on the assignment or lose an afternoon doing something else I don't want to do. I say fifteen minutes because after that fifteen minutes, I ask myself, "Can I continue?" which inevitably leads to more work and tangible progress. I try and touch every project at least once a day to stop them from getting stale. And that is how I work with my brain.

I recognize so much of what you say in myself. I was diagnosed just over a year ago at 42. I never graduated (now I know why 🙄) but have always wanted to finish my education, but just kept dropping out. Now with medication and help from therapy, friends and TH-cam I’m giving it another shot. Remember it’s never too late! And thank you so much for these great tips!

Another grad student and I have started doing co-work zoom hours to help stay on track. It's so so so helpful.

It’s funny u specifically upload this, I subscribed a long time ago (off the strength of your analysis of how AI helped our response of to the pandemic) but I never watched any of your other videos because of the technical weight of the subject. Thank you.

This has been great to watch, I have depression and anxiety and I have found it really hard to get motivated to do the thing that i wanted to do because I keep getting too much information and i just don't want to do anything. And i finally got to do it.

Oh man thank you so much for this. I have been falling apart this year as my motivation has cratered. This is quite helpful!

I just found your your channel and I feel like this is amazing! I also have inattentive ADHD and I’m in the process of applying for PhDs in Applied Machine Learning/AI so this is so helpful :D

I originally came to your channel to learn more about AI and Machine Learning (not my background). It was especially important to understand from the perspective of someone who looks like me and is a woman. But what has been crazy helpful to me is the fact that you have ADHD. Just like me. The work you do is important (of course you know), but this is so so clutch. Thank you!

I come to this from pretty much the opposite academic side--unfortunately I'm an English major--and these are still super helpful strategies for me! I also have a set playlist that I only listen to during studying time, so if I put it on and start listening it shifts me into a studying headspace. I've basically classically conditioned myself with bangers only.

I procrastinate especially for things that do not motivate me

Out of curiosity, and I realize this might be considered too personal to answer, but can I ask if you are medicated for ADHD or are the focus strategies the sole means of management?

    • @JordanHarrod
      @JordanHarrod  3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

I also take meds, but these are strategies that worked well for me even before I did - it’s definitely a bit easier to focus with meds, but directing my focus is still challenging and boring tasks are still boring, so I’ve had to find these other ways to keep myself on track.

I have honestly no idea when and why I started following you but I'm glad I did. This is some very excellent advice, thank you!
I'm definitely still figuring out how to work with my brain :') But this is a good framework to learn from!

I was looking for more on AI. And how anyone would know if and when it comes alive.
