It's also what sparked my interest in spiders, by kindergarten I could spell cephalothorax and identify random spiders around the house. My dumb teacher actually complained to my parents that I was reading too many non-fiction books. So yeah, I was basically that kid riding his bike to see some spiders. Another impossibility in all this is that spiders in real life are incredibly cannibalistic, even mothers will often see their own young as easy snacks. Even if they were smarter like in this film they'd still be constantly eating each other as it's an abundant food source for them

    • @giftedfox4748
      @giftedfox4748 3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Even during mating session it is risky. A lot of males end up dead and even so if both strike each other and does not get any aide then their open circular system cannot close up their wounds and they both will die. The only few spiders that would survive are the trap door spiders and that made up species in the movie.

    • @krlosz1996
      @krlosz1996 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      depends on the species, there are several that are communal and social like a few huntsman spiders that live in nests that can contain hundreds of spiders without cannibalism being an issue

    • @k.v.7681
      @k.v.7681 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@krlosz1996 Yup. Cannibalism in spiders is seriously misunderstood. For starters, while common, it's not nearly as common as people believe. It's also wayyyy more subtle. Some spiders never cannibalise. Others will have males willingly kill themselves to give food to the females. Others again like the Brazillian wolfspiders will have males hunting older females to "renew" the population, which is pretty unique. All in all, cannibalism for spiders is an advantage for selection and reproduction, not a drawback.

    Interesting side note: if spiders managed to grow to that size, they almost certainly wouldn't have the ability to crawl along walls and ceilings since the setae on their feet would never be able to support so much mass. We see this already in a lot of (normal-sized) tarantulas that have developed larger claws to aid in climbing. I know it's not much, but at least it would put the bastards back on a more 2-dimensional warfighting environment rather than 3D one.

    23:20 is hysterical to me, because you have a jumping spider literally ushering other spiders to get into the mall in slower "go go go" sort of fashion. That said, the one thing you missed regarding the spiders moult is that... they simply grow way too fast and don't eat nearly enough to sustain them. The spiders wouldn't be out of their first moult before they start their next with that sort of exponential growth in the first few days, and so they'd all almost certainly die mid-moult as they get stuck in old exoskeletons and then wind up still trying to moult again. Moulting is also a process that takes a huge amount of energy on the part of spiders - certainly not enough for one single man to feed the sheer number of spiders we see.
    Basically, even if there was theoretically enough oxygen to support spiders of this size, they would NEVER grow to that size in just a few days naturally, and any imbalance in their system causing them to grow faster than they can manage to moult would inevitably just kill them as they'd die mid-moult due to being unable to shed properly. Not even talking about the fact that many, many, many species of spiders are cannibals and even with higher intelligence, these eight legged dudes would probably just eat each other first. Maybe they'd just say "Sorry bro but I'm hungry" given the higher intelligence and be a bit polite about it.

    The first spider that attacked Joshua is Avicularia Avicularia aka the Pink Toe Tarantula. This tarantula is a super docile tree dweller from South America in and around the jungles of Columbia. They prefer to run and jump away, as they are super shy and heavily prefer to avoid any confrontation.
    Most spiders and tarantulas are like this too. We do hear about spider bite reports. Especially from venomous species that can really make a very healthy man sick. This is rare, as they only bite if they feel cornered. Tarantulas especially will give warnings if they feel cornered by showing what is called a threat posture. Their body flexes in a L shape, the upper body and first 4 pairs of legs are raised in the air towards the perceived threat. You can see under them and their fangs.
    The more defensive tarantulas from Africa and Asia take it one step further by slapping the ground. This it to intimidate to show how fast they are. It is rare they will bite first without warning but it is possible they will. All tarantulas can slap, and even will slap their owner. My Texas brown, one of the most docile slapped my hand when I was removing her water bowl for cleaning.
    Still do not let this movie fool you into thinking spiders are bad and aggressive. They are defensive creatures and to them we're fricken giants.

We have no info on this, but the largest probably weren't bigger like then half a meter. Which is still too big, but phew. Also, early humans probably did have to deal with large spiders. As in 30-40 cms maybe even. We have tales of this. And I would say we stop brushing away these tales because "it's not evidence".

    Spiders have to molt when they grow. Thats usually what kills a spider before it gets so large that it can't breathe. Its much less about the amount of oxygen in the air and more to do with how healthy a spider is when it molts. If a spider grows too fast it won't have the energy or a proper diet. So they would literally just die even if the science behind the growth was sound.
    Also fun fact Jumping spiders and tarantulas are extremely intelligent and can sometimes recognize their owners
