Finally! The shading toturial! Now I can finally shade my art in "the right way" so it doesn't turn into some black eyed, uneven toned individual.
Same, mine always look pale and dead
If it looks flat toned, u can add a "colour" mode layer and add rosey-ness where there would be more blood closer to the skin (nose/cheeks/etc) and desaturate where there would be less blood (forehead, under-eyes, etc). That helps a lot. Also bounced light makes things look fly as hell too

I love to see how Whatever I think of commenting is already there in the comment section!
😂🤣🤣🤣😂
Kooleen is actually being my art teacher right now and I am loving her class and would come here everytime.
Edit: Sheesh 3.6k likes 😭😭
Same
Also her vid are quite short and easy to understand 🗿
@@maplemy7h248 which an actual art teacher needs weeks to teach.
ikr she's really good at explaining
Same
"say goodbye to your nasty shading cuz today we're gonna learn how to shade" and that's when i knew this would be a great video
I recently found out that adding different colors reduces muddiness and makes the artwork pop out. For eg. let's say you're painting a skin that is usually in the yellow-red spectrum but adding the opposite spectrum like blue-magenta really makes big difference, it feels as if colors are communicating with one another.
Kooleen ain’t shady, she’s very bright when it comes to art tutorials 😎
I’ll show myself out.
The exit’s this way 👉🏼🚪
Naur, the exit's over there 🕳👈
no stop 😭 the exit’s up there 👆🚁
Na the exits down there 👇 👺
Please the exit is here ✨♨⚠✨
i personally like to start my portraits using the hue shifting method (with no blending modes), then use the multiply layer to deepen the shadows or add cast shadows. it’s a lot less time consuming and gives everything a nice flow!
(i use ibisPaint X for mobile devices,,,,, yes i draw with my finger)
i use a mix of the multiply and hue shading with a dash of Alpha Lock
hue shading is basically my friend and i love doing it considering the main brush i use is Pencil Graphite at varying opacities and man its great-
i only use multiply to “darken” my base colours and then i work from dark to light (its like oil paints except i do it in reverse)
but regardless great tutorial, and i like the chaotic format on how the video presents itself as i feel like thats how i’d teach others how to draw lmao
*you like doing your friends?* /j :>
I also draw with my fingers lol 💀
@some random eyeball™ how-
@some random eyeball™ oh.
"I draw with my finger"
What is wrong with you??
1:19 "Light bounces everywhere" 😭 yagami..-
She deserves a lot of subscribers. Literally, all of my knowledges about how to draw in digital was I learned to her
"say goodbye to your musty shading" this line goes hard wtf
Thanks kooleen for this shading tutorial, I really love your humour and wittiness, I'm also amazed by how much you can teach us stuff very well in such a short period of time. And this also helps me with the portrait of my mom I'm drawing, it looks really plain and dull because I'm just eyedropping every color therefore making it dull and seems desaturated
best virtual art teacher ever, btw Koolen had grown so much and i literally didnt notice, even tho I've always watched her vids ( i remember i sub at her when she was in 5k subs) i feel so prouddddd at youu, keep it upp
Your literally the best person to go to for art tutorials!! You make it so simple and fun to learn!! Thank you for blessing my day❤️
AAA I swear I needed this so so so bad I've been just using the multiply layer for so long and I've been feeling really bad about my final results, but haven't known any other way to do it. This really really helped! :D
I've been watching your vids for a couple days and can i just say.... I feel like I've learned so much more about how to improve my art in the last couple days and actually retaining the information and trying alot of your tips and tricks than I have for years watching any other random art tutorials/tips. I feel like I've found a hidden gem on youtube thank you so much! xD
Dude, I've been so lost when it comes to digital art. My art looked so fuzzy and plain and after learning you can mix hue shifting WITH multiply?! Why didn't I think of this before LMFAO. Thank you so much, this genuinely helped me and I feel like I learned more off of this 8 min video more than my art teachers ever taught me. The fact I never thought of how shadows might work and I assumed all shadows should be blended, I legit couldn't figure out why my paintings looked so fuzzy and blurred but now I know. You're literally a life saver 😭
Love it! Juicy and controversial fact re: 2:42 - its actually the other way around! Sounds counterintuitive, but if the light source is proportionally smaller than the object, the shadows are harsher. The bigger the light, the more it wraps around the object, creating diffused shadows. Learned this in photography school. That’s why midday sunlight is harsh- with hard, defined shadows. The sun is massive, but tiny in proportion to us. Also why soft portrait studio lighting uses huge diffused light sources.
So distance can effect the quantity of light (brighter or darker) but it also changes the quality (hard or soft) and these are separate things.
Hope this helps. Gotta put my photography diploma debt to good use
The thing is that Kooleen's tutorials are either a video you don't expect but you actually need or a video you need and you got
And I'm not complaining
Thank you for making this actually I have been struggling with shading myself. It had me pretty confused so good thing I'm subscribed ;)
The background music is funny but her HUMOR makes it even FUNNIER
😂✨🖐️
HUSJSHSJ
I love your tutorials, they literally explain exactly what goes on in my head while being informative 😩👌💕✨
0:01 not kooleen calling me out
I have recently learned about how to shade/paint using just the round brush (and the smudge tool), and it makes things so much simpler and calming~
Oh sweet lets go. I needed help with my shading. Thanks Kooleen!
At last, a useful guide. I never understood tutorials but kooleen makes it easy to understand (and its funny too so plus point for the humor)
girl Kooleen is literally more helpful than my art teacher-
This tutorial changed my art THANK YOU
I never thought to blend together Hue Shifting and Multiply but now that i've seen you do it it just makes SENSE
LIGHT bounces everywhere 💫
love your humor and great videos, short no bs and informative.
You have no idea how happy it made me when you said brushes are important. Because every shading tutorial I watch the person is like "Oh teehee I'm using this super customised special magic brush but you can just use whatever you've got!! Heehee..." And it's like I'm sorry but bitch please. That's not how it works!! So I'm really glad to hear you actually spit some facts 😭
Honestly a kooleen's video everytime you are drawing and struggling with something is a true blessing
This shading tutorial cost my whole life I'm so lucky that you always help me with these stuff I lack doing
Thanks! I'm trying to get out from art block, and this tutorial helps! My drawing still had sucked because I wasn't practicing but here I am now learning how to do art again.
OK BUT THE LEVI DRAWING IS..
AAAA ✨ ✨ 👌 👌
"IM NOT WEAK, OKAY?!!! IM JUST... SMART"
thank you kooleen this video really shifted my hues
It helped me alot kooleen!!! Your art Is beautiful!!!
Once it got to the second half I realized that I have already been mixing the two techniques though a bit differently. I use hue shifting for ambient & soft shadows and then multiply for global & harsh shadows which may be a bit odd, but my thinking is that global shadows will usually have the same undertone so I can fill in large areas with it without having to scratch my head on whether or not the opposite color has the right undertone (for example, if there is a yellow light source on a blue outfit)
PLEEEAAASEE TYSMM i was doing smthn for a contest and i finished the shading but it seemed kind off. this rly helped smm!! once again, kooleen has saved the day for me.
HEY JUST WANT U TO KNOW THAT IM RLY THANKFULL THAT U MAKE ALL OF UR VIDS TYSM
Okay,
I just love the little sun you drew in the corner
10 years old here!
I just use ibis paint and draw with finger, its also hard because my phones size screen is small but it got easier to draw when i watched koleens tutorial. My art improved so bad
I love the way you explain and talk... Anyways thank you so much 😃 💓
HI Koolen I really love your videos..can you please make a video about witch brushes you use for drawing like for linearts, colouring, your shadings. And when you use the layers? 🤩I rlly like your channel.
One of the best tutorial I have ever come across😊
Is that Levi in the thumbnail- Thank you for the tuto btw 😩✌️✨
Why has this TH-camr teached me more about art then my actual art teacher-
LEGIT SAVED MY LIFE THANK YOU 😭😭😭😭❤️❤️
I really like your voice! It’s so soothing and calm, kinda..
Your vibes made me subscribe to this channel.
just a tip, you could just scale up your hard round brush without pressure opacity to create a simple sphere shape, and then shade it, without needing a protractor. There are a few ways to spawn a basic shape
omg light bounces everywhere got me
Out of all tutorial, you and another youtuber called "ArtSenpai" really help improving my drawings, and I meant by, *A LOT*
If only the actual school lessons were like your tutorials. Memes are the best teacher low key.
wow imagine being a better teacher than my art teacher
Thank you very much
You saved the perfectionist inside me 😌
Why do I love this narration so much XD It's amazing hehe
I love Kooleen's personality goddamnit 🤣 this is very educating and funny as hell too

It makes me feel itching in my stomach and my head but also soothing at the same time
thank you for the ✨JUICY TUTORIAL ✨
I am watching your old video… then your notification is popping… thank u 😌✨
I like how you drew Levi.
I am a hue shifter, I agree it sucks🫠 but the juicy details at the end make it so much better haha
I actually learned from this. Thanks
I love you. thank you for this tutorial 😍😍
Every artists motto:
"As long as it looks good, it's F I N E."
talk abt timing. my shading skills have really been going haywire recently and i wanna improve so bad. then boom new kooleen video
THANK YOU KOOLEEN YOU'RE A LIVESAVER 😭😭😭😭 I'VE BEEN DROPPING MY DRAWINGS BCS I DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO SHADE
You explain this better than my actual art teacher 😩👌✨️
"Light bounces everywhere" *putting in some Light Yagamis* made my day!

Um 😂 2 minutes in and I'm sold. I just found your video and I feel like I've come across the holy grail 😂💕
Kooleen is a free art teacher
Ok I watched this before while I was drawing but now I fr need to know how to shade💀
OMG YOUR ART IS SO GOOD WTF💓💓💓💓💓
“Light bounces everywhere” 🥲🤣🤣🤣
I use a multiply layer because sometimes I need to adjust something below the layer or have some hue shifting on the materials, specially the skin, but instead of choosing one single color for all the shadows, I use hue shifting IN the multiply layer, same process, I get a lot of control over the shadow of every area this way.
Well... it works for me because I draw cartoony with heavy inks and use watercolor brushes for coloring, I don't know how good it is for actual painting.
I only came here for Levi. Stayed for the queen
This video is so dense with information, I can't believe it's not even 9 minutes long??
I love to hear how you explain it. Thank you, it's help me a lot.
that Levi drawing hit different
the Light faces omg I lost it xD
Idk bout you but this video is so aesthetically pleasing
I already knew all of that and I'm pretty satisfied with shading BUT I LOVE your videos so I watch them anyways
Gurl you're literally my savior I WAS HAVING A BREAKDOWN TRYING TO SHADE MY DRAWING I HAD NO IDEA WHAT THE HELL I WAS DOING 😩
Most of the time I use linear burn or color burn, works really good for shading too. :D
