In my experience, there’s a difference between a casual protest buck and a horse that wants you off immediately. The former can be easy to ride depending on your experience and the horse. The latter, for me at least, is gonna require a night latch and some good riding.

I had a horse stop........ then go on a 6 second bucking bronc ride. When the back end came up I leaned back, when the front came up I leaned forward. Stayed in the saddle, had not ridden in 32 years and that ole horse knew it.

Thanks for the tips. I love yoga too, it feels good AND helps my riding. I once took an online confident rider course that taught the emergency dismount. I practiced it a couple times at walk and trot. A few days later I was on a trail ride that went wrong, and was able to leap off my moving horse without even a thought, hanging onto the reins and running back to the accident. Muscle memory is real!

I rode a bit as a kid and young adult. My best friend have me a riding lesson for my 40th birthday with her daughters instructor. What a great experience! She had me in a big arena riding/ waking with no hands until she saw I had the proper posture the bad me trotting with no hands, turning the horse with my legs only. It was empowering and good skill development.

With over sixty years in the saddle starting and riding young horses and problem horses out here in the rough country of the Big Basin I have had my share of wrecks, some very serious. In retrospect, when I got shaken loose, it was invariably because I let my attention lag and was not on the money with anticipation. I have had two horses in my career I just was not cowboy enough to ride. They both ended up in bucking strings. The lesson here is, that problems with horses are usually the fault of the rider and getting ahead of the horse in their learning cycle.

You totally gave great advice! My trainer taught me this one time n I never practiced. I made a huge mistake. First bronc ride in a field by myself. Finally he stopped after a very long time and almost broke my neck. It's messed up. 2nd time on hard surface n I was so afraid he was going to break my neck ... For the first time in 56 years I bailed! N mentally in all these years can't shake him trying to kill me. It repeats in my head every time I ride any horse. Hopefully I get over it soon. I got rid of that horse. But going forward I am going to practice this one stop!!! Thank you again for the advice. You may be saving my life for my future with my wild mare n my coming on 2 year old. May practice this with him on the ground til he is broke.

As you age for many folk the build up of dead cells & other detritus in the semi-circular canals of the inner ear mess with the signals you need for balance.
Now that is FAR from the only reason someone may have poor balance BUT
If you dig around on internet there's a fair bit of useful guides how to use postural positioning to help the detritus exit the semi-circular canals

You guys will know this but maybe others won't so.
Hadn't riden for at least 12 years, got the chance of a ride & took it. But at a Canter I was not 'solid'.
One of the folk from the stable said try this: *'Hold the reins witth one hand, keep it close and central and stand in the stirrups'* - Then ran a Fast Canter with no dramas - it all felt 'planted'.
Later I thought 'Of course - Standing's just like riding a Motocross dirt bike - You're both keeping in balance & letting you legs act as shock absorbers to smooth out the jolts so they don't disrupt your torso's balance.
You'll get sore legs at first but then you'll get fit too I suspect

My instructor literally makes me spend half an hour just doing standing up exercises and walk and trot - with one arm in the air, to my side, and then out in front of me. I was really bad at it in the beginning, but now it's easy! I truly think because of this, I've been able to stay on the past few times my horse threw in some surprising crow hops at the canter.

Great video thank you! One question I have is that although I have very quick reflexes when it comes to a 1 rein stop (but no horn, as ride English), my new young horse acted very out of character when I did a 1 rein stop on him. I asked for canter in an open field and he tried to take off with me. I instantly pulled him into a tight circle, but as I turned him he bronched and got me off. So now I’m worried about upsetting him by doing that again. He’s normally so sweet. What would you do in that situation?

    • @amberblyledge7859
      @amberblyledge7859 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

My horse also hates to be snatched in the mouth. One of the few times she'll buck out of irritation is if I accidentally or purposefully catch her mouth. I'd recommend that you don't go straight for the tight circle. Doa spiral pattern. Starting with 20M then by halfway you can be at 10M. As the circle gets gradually smaller you horse HAS TO slow down or collect to maintain balance or they risk slipping by 5M circles.
Be aware of ovals though. A horse uses ovals to cheat the circle system. It m akes it so they don't have to bend in the middle.
I suppose you can also try to disengage the hind end too. Pull to turn his head and push his hind end out.
I'd also recommend you check his bit and noseband if he has them. This is just my experience with my own horses, but mine tend to like the bit lower than the standard wrinkle and a half and I pretty much ride without a noseband. Sometimes young horses do need a noseband though, I do understand that! They way most single joints work is they have a lever action. It's possible he got stabbed with it when you pulled. I know my mare can't STAND that. Put a single joint in her mouth and she'll try to kill you! Learned that quick enough. Oddly enough she also can't stand bitless.
Point is there's not really a way of telling what exactly caused it without checking/fixing one thing at a time and seeing if that worked. Could have bolted because he had a fly land on his butt. Could just feel good and got excited. Maybe the bit caught him or maybe pressure from the turn caused him to get nervous.

When I was still riding I would do what I called “running body checks” where I’d mentally run through my body making sure I was physically correct, tall, head up, open shoulders, core, soft legs, etc. and I would be constantly checking in with myself and my horse.

I really like this advice and the balance exercises on the ground. Imo there is so much confusion on how to engage your core. Some say it's like if you were to get punched in the gut, how you prepare yourself to receive the punch that's engagement. Or stick you gut out that's engagement. But you can feel immediately when you pull your tummy in and engage your crotch (ie stop the pee) your stomach is engaged because it makes you sink back on your bum and gives your core strength.
    Super ♥️😁

Just wondering, once the bucking has started, is there a body position to get into to keep from getting bucked off? Thinking of the saddle bronc riders where they seem to be leaning backwards. So, would it help to be leaning back while using the one rein stop? I was bucked off a couple of years ago. Luckily, went sailing forwards, did a mid-air flip from side to side and slid on my back in an alfalfa field. 70+ just got a bruise from the cantle. Pretty crazy. I was trying to pull on one rein at the time.

OMG, where were you two 30 years ago!? 😳 I rescued a young thoroughbred from a race track in Oregon. He had been breezed but not officially raced. I paid meat packer price ($650) which was where he was headed if he didn't get sold. Long story short, he had a buck that could launch you into the arena rafters. For all appearances, the buck came out of nowhere. I was taking a lunge line lesson on him when he gave a little buck. I thought, I can ride this!! A few strides later, he bucked MUCH harder and then came up off his front feet, but just a little. Well...the buck threw me forward and as his front feet came off the ground, my nose smacked into his incredibly hard neck, breaking my nose! Until I was able to get my nose fixed, my husband refused to go to the grocery store with me because people assumed he did that to me and some people were pretty obvious about their opinion! Anyway, I have learned quite a bit from you and your explanations are priceless! I would have done lots of things differently or better if you hadn't been maybe a toddler 30ish years ago!!

I suppose if you tighten your core and pelvic floor, in an unexpected spook from your horse, having these muscles engaged will ultimately keep you centered and balanced. Whereas , on the other side of the spectrum, once you lose your balance you might be falling off.

Nice video. Love the balance exercises. I hate to be "that person" but the bridle on the bay horse at the end should not be used with a snaffle bit. It really needs a throatlatch. Otherwise, when the rider pulls back on the reins, the horse can shake their head and the bridle can come over their ears and fall off.

Misleading title and thumbnail. Every video I’ve watched that has a title similar to this is all about “prevention”, and doesn’t actually tell you what to do if you are on a horse that spooks or bucks. Not every measure of prevention will be successful. Especially for new riders who aren’t as experienced

From above the time I was 12 till I was 35 are used hypnotherapy because I was born disabled and it was the best therapy because the horse engaged all my muscles at the same time. The question I have is when I was 12 I was all a newly trained horse. And he went into spooky mode, because he heard a dog I don’t know? I was able to stay on the horse, even though he was spinning in a circle, until he suddenly stopped then I just kind of slid off the horse.😂 i’m just curious, is there something you can do better if a horse goes into that spin? Oh, and just as a sidenote, I got right back on the horse. I think it scared my physical therapist and the trainers more than it did me.😊 Obviously, it didn’t bother me too much. I kept riding for years.

Ryan, I have experience the horse was peaceful and calm , but next second decided to bulk without any sign. What can I do when that happens? Also I’m riding English. So if there has English tips for this will be really appreciated. 😊

Not to sound like a dork, but why is the western saddle pad too small for the saddle? Is this a new thing? I've got some serious FOMO going on here. 😉

Until it happens....you don't know how you will respond... unless you are already an athlete...a balanced athlete...as a stunt rider I had advantage over a buck or spook movement..your advice is good...the exercises are good advice

What if you are riding in an English saddle and can't push on a horn? :)

Ride on your pockets best advice I ever got. Circle really fast with outside leg going big you feel horse hump up to disengage rear nd refocus brain.
I see so many riders now riding on their crotch instead of their seat bones, especially English types, but western is getting just a bad.

I've rolled off the front of a horse, I've rolled off the back of a horse and I've rolled underneath a horse. Once I learned toes up toes out heels down I was a much more confident rider and I could deal with a buck. If I had the money at the time I probably would have gotten into barrel racing. Now I just want to have some pleasure horses.
