    i love the accurate description you do all during your episodes. I read years ago a book from the author Giles Tremlett with the title in spanish " Isabel la católica, la primera gran reina de europa", for many years i never thought in a video or podcast someone could ever cover all the complexity of Isabella and the history of spain during her reign, but you did it. Many thanks for all your work here, i actually felt like i was reading the book again while hearing you

    The Spanish Inquisition was not the only inquisitorial court in Europe, nor the first. Some facts: 1, When Spanish citizens were going to be tried for a crime, if they had the choice, they preferred the court of the Inquisition to any other civil court. 2, The Court of the Inquisition provided more procedural guarantees than any other civil and religious court in the rest of Europe. 3, The court of the Inquisition in Spain practically did not try witchcraft cases, because people who were accused of witchcraft in other countries, mostly women, were frequently considered to have mental illnesses. Because in Spain doctors had already recognized the existence of mental illnesses since at least the 15th century and, I believe, that the first hospital for mental illnesses was built in the Crown of Aragon between the 15th and 16th centuries.

    I have now watched this episode through for the third time, including ‘rewinding’ sections of it multiple times to try to be sure I understood more clearly.
    One of the most striking things (among many) to me was your point that the Inquisition was much less successful in smaller villages where people presumably knew each other better.
    We in the US are raised with tales of The Salem Witch Trials, which are emblematic of what happens when religious judgmentalism runs rampant *in a small community!*
    Of course there are more modern parallels, as toward the end you mention the early Soviet Union, and earlier in the video the special badges Jews were marked with (or was that in the previous installment? - this was a long one) anyway, thank you very much for this. I will undoubtedly have to watch it yet again.

    • @evaschubert1
      @evaschubert1  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This was something that stood out for me as well when it came up in my research. When the internal community bonds are strong and outsiders are distrusted, there is more resistance to these terrifying movements. The flip side of that can easily be inferred, along with the likely consequences. I really appreciate you letting me know what you got from this episode.

    4, The court of the Inquisition was not established to repress the Jews, it was to ensure that Catholics, I repeat, Catholics respected the teachings and commandments of the Catholic Church. A Catholic who was denounced for practicing the Jewish, Mohammedan religion or any non-orthodox Christian rite outside the authority of Rome could be tried by the Inquisition. But the Inquisition partly functioned as a political court, the unity of Spain was formed on the basis of religious unity, if someone secretly practiced Judaism or Islam, in practice they were considered a traitor to the Spanish nation and a enemy, like a spy in modern times. 5, Minors were not judged by the Inquisition. 6, The Spanish Inquisition condemned about 3,500 people to die at the stake in about 250 years. These condemned by the Inquisition were the only people killed due to religious violence in Spain in this period: there were no progroms by the fanatic people against Jews and Moriscos, there were no massacres of Protestants, etc. Until 1936 there were no religious wars between spaniards in Spain.
    There are many other things that could be said in summary about the Inquisition, but since I am Spanish my inquisitorial nature forces me to ask questions of all of you: Do you know the total number of deaths from religious violence in Great Britain in the same period of time in which The Spanish Inquisition condemned people? Do you know the numbers of murders in a single night, that of Saint Bartholomew, in Paris? Do you know the number of Protestants murdered by Catholics and Catholics murdered in France? Do you know the number of Catholics and Protestants murdered in Germany? How many of those Catholics and Protestants murdered were they murdered without trial in Germany, Great Britain and France? How many people did Calvin kill at the stake in Geneva? How many of those who know these figures ignore them and always prefer to speak stupid generalities about the Spanish Inquisition and Spain? Knowing that those tried and executed, rather than lynched, for religious reasons in Spain is an infinitely smaller number than in most European states, how long will Spain continue to be painted as a violent and intolerant country?

  • @michellemeza5107
    @michellemeza5107 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Eva might’ve mentioned this but so I missed it… I think it’s important to note that religious unity was essential to stability in the realm: a strong Church = a strong stable government. And with the number of false converts obtaining high positions in the church sowing discord, was problematic and destabilizing and yes, heresy as well as treason. Spain couldn’t be singled out as unique in this case: just look at England. I appreciated the clarification that Isabella was not hostile towards Jews and how she enacted laws that prohibited the harming of Jews. I agree with the above comment that the Black Legend should be mentioned as a precursor to any discussion on the Spanish Inquisition.
    I’m thoroughly enjoying these podcasts, though I don’t agree with everything said. They are engaging and entertaining and I am learning so much from Eva’s presentations which prompts my own research. Would love to know the source material she uses.

    Actually France formally expelled Jewish people for the last time in 1394 with France having expelled Jewish people many times before such as in 1306 and in 1391 there was a massive wave of violence against Jewish people where Jewish people were often brutally attacked and killed or forcibly baptized by anti semites which led to many conversios due to many Jewish people being forcibly converted to Christianity or to them converting either out of understanbile fear of being attacked and killed or to also understanbly improve their living conditions rather than out of being true Christians. 34:29

      @@evaschubert1 Not as horrible as it seems. In 300 years, some 3,500 people condemned by the Inquisition in Spain were executed, and these deaths were the only violent ones for religious reasons in Spain in that period. I mean that in those 300 years there were no progroms, lynchings, raids for religious reasons in Spain. How many Protestants were murdered on St. Bartholomew's Eve in Paris? How many people did Calvin burn at the stake in Geneva in a few years? Many more than in Spain in 300 years. In Spain we know the figures almost exactly, because we keep large historical archives. What is incredible is that having magnificent historical archives, foreign historians are too lazy to consult them except to find out the possible whereabouts of a galleon loaded with gold. It would be good if you made a comparative video with figures of violent deaths for reasons of religion, not just Jews, since Moors, Catholics and Protestants have just as much right to be counted when they are murdered. I fear that in a contest of this type to see who was crueler, Spain would end up in the last places, to the chagrin of many out there.

      And what would the reason be? Before the Reconquista, when Andalusia was under Muslim rule, people of different religious groups lived together as neighbors. Muslims respected the language and the culture of other groups. Their rule marked a period of cultural exchange and innovation, with advancements in science, art, and literature. Non-Christians had to fake that they were Christians due to the harsh rule of Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile.
