That is a great story about the difficulties of collaborating with other human beings. The frustration of knowing that an idea is a gem, but they say NO. That’s tough for anyone to handle, especially when you believe whole-heartedly in the idea.
The joke could still be good, but written for the wrong person to deliver though. There's a "style" to each person and it may be hard for an outside person to match them up.
He was talking about working with celebrities and how at SNL they would write skits for them under the assumption that this famous person would know exactly how to act because it was written with that particular celebrity in mind, but celebrities aren't always aware about how they are perceived by others. He also talked about writing for comedy legends and how you learn to know your place very quickly when you start to think you know better than someone who has been in the business for decades.
+Lee Hoffman ~ He's actually completely coherent, just the editing isn't doing him any favors. The da-da-ta-da bit is describing the cadence of the joke, and how he'd try to have the host pause or emphasize a part for a better delivery, but the hosts weren't having it. Their loss - he's the master of delivery, after all. :O)
This is why John Mulaney is so successful. Collaboration is about lifting people with a laugh not ramming your joke down their throat. Great interview. Thanks, John. Thanks, Sam. #OffCamera #SNL

I know exactly what he’s saying. I’ve never found a term or word for this amount of attention to empathy I can sense about people. I watch, assess body language, repetition of language and body movements, how responsive or not, engaged or distant. Once I catch on I change my behavior to suit them, help them and guide them using innocent questions. The questions help them think of something differently (something that i’m leading towards or insinuating) while I don’t outrightly ask them. Doing it like this lets the other people believe they’ve came up with that idea/thought and not me. I have a major problem with social anxiety, to the point it’s hindered my life and almost extends into a fear of people. It’s a roll over tactic to appease people whilst still getting what I know I deserve.
@@SnailHatan It can be used as manipulation, but as I said: its a roll over tactic mainly to appease people, yet still get the job done right. What's wrong with letting other people think they got to the answer themselves?
I get that through his experience, I should bow to him, but I can’t follow his logic. What I can appreciate is that he speaks from his mind with a purpose.
2:51 It’s stupid, childish, passive aggressiveness like that that pisses me off about “Artists.” Just say you don’t like the piece! If a joke, or sketch isn’t for you, tell the goddamn writers! It seems like it would save everyone the time and energy.
In general, but especially if you're a WRITER you never ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, EVER give an actor a line reading. I don't care what you "heard in your head" when you wrote the line. When you hand the material over to the actor it becomes THEIRS to do with it what they see fit. Now if you are the DIRECTOR, that's an entirely different story....
The lack of humility here is a bit of an issue. Is it that the celebrity cannot say the line right, the celebrity doesn’t like the joke or could it even possibly be that the joke just is not funny? Certainly the skit wouldn’t be canned, they would still film it and “expect it to be cut”. Why not just can it? Admit it doesn’t work because it isn’t funny! The egos in the SNL writers room are massive. Especially with the SNL monologue reference, those are typically not funny at all. SNL writers suffer from massive narcissistic complexes. The show is broadcast with canned laughter. If the audience had to laugh organically, there’d be incredibly awkward silence and light chuckles for most of the show. I wish this weren’t the case. I think SNL has a wonderful legacy and a lot of potential. The writers think they’ve won the jackpot but the work doesn’t really speak for it.
In retrospect I can see that he is wired..and not in a coffee and cigarette kind of way. But I will say this...I would he. Nose high in all vices if I were in his place.
He’s hot .. kinda? Edit: ok I checked out some of his comedy and it’s terrible. I CAN confirm he’s hot tho 😛 Edit No.2: when I say “his comedy” I meant the few clips of his stand-up sucked. Stefon fr SNL and probs other things he’s done are funny
Mulaney is a comedic genius. He's so quick and witty.
They say SNL isn’t diverse enough, but they had this young Asian woman on staff years ago. They don’t get enough credit for that.
J Mulaney is articulate with his language and his face. They both describe his story. And he's easy on the eyes.
Articulate with his language? He said "Like" nearly every sentence!
parents both lawyers
@@MitsuoRLCoach Being a lawyer is definitely not always consistent with being articulate...
@@MitsuoRLCoach I doubt it's because of that. John is an english major after all.

This interviewer makes me feel comfortable. He seems to be genuinely non judgemental
hey tall child, you cannot be burning the candle at both ends
Ugh please put the full show up on offcamera. I can't wait any longer! I love these clips!
Usually I watch this show and I think 'oohh so that's how they really act..' lol but... John is the same.

Mulaney's stand up timing, pacing, rhythm and delivery is innate. If he wrote a part for you and gives you notes, you are stupid for not trusting him.
Some interesting insights, but I'd say it's not the most coherent interview from Mulaney. :D

you got what he meant and that's all that matters lmao
