I only remember this because me and my mate saw it and then decided it would be a great idea to dig a tunnel connecting our back yards... We made good progress for a couple of afternoons, but then we hit a big rock that we couldn't get out, so we gave up. 🤣

Looks like an ITV production from yesteryear. I'm in Australia though, and my son is obsessed with this few frames of vision and I have absolutely no context for it to try and find it. This is one of my favourite episodes. Couple of curiosities: why did they dig the tunnel in Matthew's bedroom? He was bound to find it sooner or later. They should have dug it in their own bedroom, Matthew would never have found it. And when Matthew came into his bedroom for the second time whilst they were digging, why didn't he tell Sooty to have a bath? After all, he'd previously told Sweep to have a bath.
I think they thought they'd have dug the tunnel by the time he found the hole! Also I think they think Matthew is a bit silly and doesn't notice things as long as they trick him. It's typical kid behaviour! To answer your second question, when Sooty was dirty with soil he was hiding behind Soo so Matthew didn't see him.
Matthew was a broken man who had to downgrade after his wife killed herself and their two children. Sooty and Co was his drug fueled illusions. He replaced his sons with Sooty and Sweep and Sue was his wife. He was found dead with the three handmade puppets in 2013 covered in piss, vomit and blood
