Hi, MSI Tomahawk x670e Wifi owner here. The SSD issue comes with some of the newer BIOS updates. Lower BIOS versions don't have that issue. I have an WD SSD and had to downgrade my BIOS. Now it works fine.
Are there any other issues with the older bios versions? I’ve ordered the x670e tomahawk and have a wd black sn850x, I’d be fine just using an older bios if there aren’t other issues but if you know of any I could return the board or the drive (this is the first I’ve heard of this issue annoyingly didn’t even think to check it)
MSI Tomahawk x670e Wifi owner here, I run Samsung 990 Pro NVME as my OS and a pair of Samsung 870 Evo SATA SSD as my data drives, plus three P1800X Optane as cache all without any issues. And I've been updating my bios from factory to current latest every time a new bios came out (I was interested in AGESA update to improve DDR5 memory compatibility) without any issues with my drives. For Tomahawk x670e I'll say: Pro: besides the normal x16 PCIE 5.0 and x4 M.2 gen 5, the board has a separate 4x PCIE 5.0 slot (in dummy x16 size too) that came directly out of the CPU. That's pretty cool if you want to play with say, using an Optane drive with Primocache to improve your OS drive's low queue depth random read performance. Makes Windows a lot snappier. The board also has three 4x M.2 gen 4 slots from chipset for you to RAID5 your data drives if you don't want to use SATA. Con: does not support ECC memory even though AM5 CPUs should be able to, so not so good if you want to turn it into a server if you went for AM5 for that reason. Also one other feature I like is MSI BIOS has a very clear setting to allow either motherboard to control wake from hibernate or let the OS control it. I like it since as if you let OS control you can see in system log very clearly if something wakes up your computer unexpectedly and hunt it down.
I have the same motherboard and honestly got lucky I didn't look up any comparability issues, but microcenter had a pretty good deal on crucial nvme 4 ssds when I bought it so I never had any issue.
The "overall pick" is for most selling for specific search term you searched and "best seller" is given to most consistent selling product in the category.
This video is why spending even just 15 minutes on the Tom's Hardware GPU Benchmarks Hierarchy page is worth it when doing a cursory search for a new graphics card. The RTX 3060 12GB was a great choice 2 or 3 years ago when it came out based on performance and VRAM amount, but really as of about a year ago, there are better options on the market depending on price and performance preferences if one looks a little bit.
@@Jalex0021 You're comment kind of misses my point and the point proven in the video. In the video a RX 7700 XT with 12GB VRAM is beating a RTX 3060 with 12GB VRAM. It's good to have enough VRAM to act as a frame buffer and HD texture storage, but more VRAM won't make up for a GPU that's too low end to utilize all the VRAM effectively. The reason I said it was a great choice back in 2021/2022 was because it was the one of the few times Nvidia didn't short change a SKU in the VRAM department.

maybe im crazy but if the methodology for selecting the SSD was searching "SSD" on amazon. I would expect a 2.5" SATA SSD every time. Maybe this is just me being old fashioned but "SSD" without "NVMe" preceding it always means that SATA form factor.
@@vera9230 I searched SSD in my Amazon search engine and the top 3 results were a *sponsored* Lexar external SSD, a *sponsored* nvme KingSpec SSD, and an *overall pick* Samsung 980 Pro 2TB. Mind you a SATA only showed up in my search after the 8th m.2 and after “customers frequently viewed” and “Black Friday deals” horizontal ads.
I agree, but I'm also confused why their overall pick was a sata ssd. I went to go search for myself both in my main account and in a private window, and the Samsung 980 pro appeared for me both times. I wonder if the sata ssd at the time of filming and procurement was that crucial sata ssd. I'd like to see some extra information on what and when they searched in these videos.

It makes sense for that SSD form factor to be recommended. I assume most people buying an SSD from Amazon are buying it as an upgrade for their existing systems and might not have an M.2 slot free. It was the case with my ITX build.
Well something in "defense" of the amazon picks. I think that these encompass more than just "wanting to build a new PC"? Of course SATA SSDs or even a one generation (good new market value) will be more popular than the newest/most up-to-date components. These are more typical upgrade parts&paths for existing older machines. Just due to comparability reasons or possible "over-budgeting" in terms of performance, meaning bottle necking. But please correct me if I am wrong here in my analysis! :)
I heavily agree with this. i thinks NVME came around 2016 ish, some PC's from 2012 will probably have that extra sata slot for an older SSD, i mean, if you are on your work PC that is only ever used for some excel, e-mail reading and some calls, i'd say it's a really great upgrading from a HDD to an SSD
I'd imagine you could be buying more SATA SSDs than NVME drives too. I have an NVME, but I also have a SATA, and I'm thinking about adding another. But I can't add a second NVME with my current motherboard.

12GB is the default first released version. 8GB came out few months later and was criticised for not only having 4GB less VRAM with the same name, but also being slower.
Idk, I feel like people who want extra space for datagraves would go with usually cheaper external drives - sure, some may take internal SSDs but I honestly think the majority of the sales come from people who are upgrading older PCs to SSD or generally picking them when their system doesn't support NVMe.
Building on a budget personally I went for the absolute cheapest possible motherboard to give more money to CPU and GPU lol, only 1 m.2 slot on my am5 platform
The crucial ssd makes sense, theyre cheap enough for people to upgrade their old laptop and get a decent performance boost. Ive installed at least a hundred of them at this point
I have to agree. They cover a range of prices, generally with pretty consistent quality. And, as Linus mentioned in the video, their support is at very least solid. They're a brand I usually have little qualms with buying for my PC
@@connor040606 for a smaller company that's not buying massive volumes, retail can be cheaper than direct wholesale. And probably also faster and more flexible.

A budget of 1200-1300 sounds very crazy to me, especially since that will barely get you a mid-range gaming PC nowadays compared to how things were not too long ago. Not even 10 years ago for that kind of money I could get a current gen HEDT and dual graphics cards in the nvidia xx70 tier. On my current build I spent 250 on mobo(X99)+cpu(14core)+ram(64GB DDR4)+gpu(quadro 8GB vram), just to give an idea on how ridiculous spending over 1000 sounds to me. @mikeycrackson last I checked, the engineers that made it said that's within spec. You may not like it but that doesn't mean it's not normal. Most computers run that hot at the die level because extra cooling costs extra money with no real benefit to anyone.

Speculation is those channels weren't seeing much viewership and it just wasn't worth keeping them going and some staff were let go. I have that GPU, bought it last December and it broke with the same reason from that review in about September. Amazon accepted the return straight away after a 10 minute text chat. Might be slightly different in uk to wherever that review was from but very happy with the service new one was shipped for free next day!
One of the things I've found helpful is if you look at the description of the item under the price, it will let you know if the item is frequently returned, regarles of the star rating. Another good thing I have found is a Firefox feature that will give you a rating of the reviews and let you know if they are legit or fake somehow. Alomst at the end of the video, I guess I did pretty good in picking my parts by hand. Other than the ram and the fact I went with a Coolermaster water cooler, I have the same case, CPU 5700x, GPU 7700xt, and MB. I transferred bot my 2TB WD black NVME drives over from my old PC along with my 16TB 3.5 old school spinner. (my raw data drive). I didn't have any problems with my PSU. But I did install the cables before I put it in.
Nice video and also nice suggestions from Amazon. Really appreciate the call outs to details like the PSU differece. I think it shows some extra attention to detail which is a big improvement over the pre-production-halt LTT. Keep it up!
God the more I watch these videos, the more I appreciate console gaming. I fully understand that part of the PC gaming is the tech and the research and pride of build. I understand that entirely but when you have two systems at both roughly the same price perform so differently, it makes the barrier to entry so high. You have to not only have the knowledge of what it takes to build a pc and which components are worth splurging on vs skimping on, you also have to be patient for the sales. I get that’s part of the fun for some people, but for a dad with a limited amount of gaming time and budget for gaming, it’s nice to buy a box that just plays the games I want to play.
Don't let these techtubers or the pcmasterrace fool you, it's perfectly acceptable to buy a prebuilt PC. Sure, it comes with a bit more technical hurdle on the OS side, but premade PC's are fine for general gaming, as are consoles.
I have a 4000D airflow. The HDD cage is only held in by 2 screws and has 2 mounting positions to accommodate for longer PSUs/give more room for cabling. Or, if you're not planning to install any HDDs, just take it out completely, like I did.
Really great video. Something near the end got me thinking, with the comment about skimping on CPU to upgrade your GPU making it better for gaming, I would love to see a high end emulation (PS3 or the likes) as a benchmark in future videos to show the potential cons of a less powerful CPU
Seeing so many parts I used in my personal home build I built just over a year ago is really cool lmao! Same CPU, same PSU (thank you for using the shift lol), and the same RAM! Interested in the next RAM video though, would be nice to know if I need to change something.
Make sure you watch a lot of good building videos first to not miss something stupid and damage something. No metal bits touching the back of the motherboard once powered on, etc.
Prince between the two power supplies is the bearing on the fan is maglev on the newer version. There's some other minor differences like the high wattage power connector for gpus but that's about it
Hey. That's the corsair case I'm currently using! It's neat to see something I personally use in one of these videos even if it's just a case. It's decent.
The sata drive is probably recommended since you can always slap a sata SSD in a old laptop and make it feel faster. It's also a good storage upgrade for consoles like ps3s and ps4. Many people still rock older hardware and a ssd is always a good upgrade.
It would be cool if you did stuff like this based on other countries too and made them go against each other, like america vs canada vs uk, which overall pick is the best etc...
A fun challenge would be an all Amazon basics build, I think in a short time they’ll have enough of the actual internals for a PC that are Amazon basics, right now the only internal I can find is a fan. But they also have a monitor and a ton of peripherals

For Tomahawk x670e I'll say:
Pro: besides the normal x16 PCIE 5.0 and x4 M.2 gen 5, the board has a separate 4x PCIE 5.0 slot (in dummy x16 size too) that came directly out of the CPU.

Not on the Nvidia side there isn't. Jumping to an RTX 4070 for the same 12GB is quite the price leap.

I was thinking the same thing; if you want a NVME drive, that needs to be part of the search criteria.
searching just 'ssd' on amazon gives me a 980 Pro 2TB nvme. Not sure what they were searching for
@@vera9230 I searched SSD in my Amazon search engine and the top 3 results were a *sponsored* Lexar external SSD, a *sponsored* nvme KingSpec SSD, and an *overall pick* Samsung 980 Pro 2TB. I’ve only ever used Samsung SSDs so I’m convinced we have different search algorithms.

I agree, but I'm also confused why their overall pick was a sata ssd. I'm running 3 970 EVOs on the same board. Never had any issues. It's a solid choice.

I built a pc last Black Friday from Amazon for around 1200-1300 including mouse, keyboard, two monitors, and a mouse pad. Brand new pc, no used parts and I am able to run any game I want just fine. You don’t have to go crazy to get a good setup
The channels are on hiatus as addressed by Linus and Luke on WAN show.
