Thanks for updating the programs to V2. I do like being able to expand strokes. Now if we could just apply filters to strokes and lines I would be in love with this. I was wanting to apply a ZIG ZAG to multiple single lines but I can not do that currently.
Curves drawn with the brush tool do not appear to be expandable, only the most rudimentary plane strokes are expandable. Kinda bummer if that's by design.
Yup... Bought the software 2 months ago, start to use it on an important production project, get all my work done, and #^&$%#!!! The strokes won't expand! This just really pissed me off because I feel they are absolutely not transparent about this MASSIVE shortcoming. Raster brushes are misleadingly controlled by a "Vector Brush" and they chose not to put them in the Pixel Persona. The fact that raster brushes are in the vector section was the wrong way to implement this. I am sure a lot of people besides myself found themselves in a similar situation.
They even sell these artistic brushes in their store as “vector brushes”, which they are absolutely not. The other problem right now is that even expanding the plain and simple strokes is not done precisely enough. If you look closely the integrity of some of the rounded caps of open strokes and also curved strokes in general are not maintained while expanding, which is nothing short of a disaster if you’ve taken any time to perfect a logo and need to outline and hand it over to a client. I actually ended up buying VectorStyler to clean up that mess made by Affinity Designer.
@ Right! I was shopping around for some thinking they actually were vector brushes. I'm glad I found out before buying any. I was super close TBH. Yes! I saw some of that as well! I thought they performed quite clunky in that regard. I am gonna have to take a look at that. Were you happy with that purchase?
@@mattspawn1975 Happy with VectorStyler? Honestly I feel it's sort of an hidden gem out there. It just keeps blowing my mind how powerful it is the more a learn about it. It's 100% vector, reads Illustrator files, as well as all Illustrator's vector assets, brushes, patterns, has also the blend tool, image tracing, transform effects, many advanced drawing tools that even Illustrator doesn't have. It's pretty insane honestly. On the flip side it might come across as overkill initially but I think it's worth the time to learn. Only problem is perhaps it doesn't feel as stable just yet as Illustrator or Designer (it sometimes struggles with more complex Illustrator's assets), but in general the potential is huge for such a small player.
@@juurstudio That's awesome! Options are good to have. I had never heard of it before, so I appreciate it. Looks like they have a demo, so I'll have to give it a try. Thanks, man!
hello affinity! unrelated question but i wanna ask how do you make nodes snap when mesh warping/ make mesh nodes snap just like you would with the curves node tool
Same. I've found that if I draw with a variable width brush, then when I do expand stroke it never converts it completely accurately :( (on both iPad and MacBook Pro)
It's crazy they still haven't fixed this highly critical bug as of January 2025, which renders Designer simply unusable for any work that relies on precise vector output, like logo designs etc.
I've been trying to get the Expand Stroke followed by Add to create a single object technique to work but instead of combining the layers disappear, poof, gone. What would account for this?
Thank you for this video! I have a Problem: I had a Curve and I expanded the stroke and found it useful. So I decided to save the file. But a few days and many operations later, I wished to make it undo. Unfortunatelly the undo Funktion doesn‘t help me anymore. Is there a chance, to go the opposite way, back to a simple curve? It would help me a lot Savigny a ton of time.
When you expand a stroke it’s a destructive action and you’re unable to turn it back into a curve. I suggest making a copy of your work (while it’s still curves) that way you’ll have a copy if you need to adjust it later on. I hope this helps!
Additional to Dylan Gosvener absolutely correct answer, I may add that you can save the undo history with the file (enable it in the file menu). In that case you could undo back until you get the original curve (ctrl+Z or history panel). At that point you have lost all work done after it of course, but you could copy the original curve and then redo back to the current state of the document and paste the curve in. This approach probably does not help you now, as you would have needed to enable "save history with file" before closing the document, but maybe it helps next time.
This is what im looking for ❤

Nice, but I have similar scenario and Expand stroke doesn't work correctly. A have some deformations of the object there.
