- The pro-drug prednisone must be converted in the body to its active form prednisolone. Prednisone, a synthetic anti-inflammatory glucocorticoid, remains among the 25 most commonly prescribed drugs in the United States and appears to be on an upward trend.
As an anti-inflammatory, prednisone combats a wide array of conditions ranging from skin rashes, allergic reactions, arthritis and COPD to gastrointestinal conditions, kidney disease, thyroiditis and even cancer.
While short term use of prednisone rarely results in significant complications, prolonged therapy produces a dramatic and lengthy list of unwanted adverse reactions. Among the side effects associated with prednisone are diabetes, susceptibility to infection, reactivation of tuberculosis, sodium retention and swelling of the legs. Other unwanted issues involve osteoporosis, avascular necrosis of the bones, cataracts, skin fragility, substantial weight gain and muscle wasting.
Prednisone also results in a number of psychiatric conditions ranging from hyperactivity, restlessness and euphoria to agitation, depression, anxiety and insomnia. Mental confusion, difficulties with memory and attention deficits occur at moderate doses. Prednisone may precipitate manic attacks.
Finding the correct dose of prednisone varies with the individual, the underlying disease and a variety of issues linked to the physician’s prescribing habits. Keeping the dose of prednisone relatively low and continuing treatment for only as long as necessary seems prudent. Prednisone must not be stopped abruptly but rather tapered over weeks to months depending on dose and duration of therapy.
I believe this person actually read every book behind him
@ Sal Mastropolo and why they make sure these Doctors are Hidden from Algorithms like usless unprofessional morons trying to make it on the internet and they get more subs views? this is Ludacris keeping the truth hidden. FDA Years ago never approved steroids and why today they pushed the FDA so far the FDA had to aprove one of the Most Dangerous.

He probably wrote half of them.

Used for COVID Cough and I think it saved my life. My cough was uncontrollable and this was the only drug that worked out.

Did you have bad side effects from it and how did you taper off?

@johnnowak can you please tell me what dose you took and for how long. I have pain in the palm of my right hand and I got 5mg to take 2 times per day for one week.

This is information I wish my doctors had given me as part of informed consent when they prescribed it with absolutely no plan in terms of dosage and length of time, not despite me telling them I had new and worsening symptoms on it.
I got itchy skin with no rash at all. It's miserable and my family doctor as well as the dermatologist could not find out. They asked me to change soaps, detergents, bed sheets, ...etc and take Antihistamine...NONE OF THESE HELP.
I decided to see an Allergist and she have me this med. Today is my 3rd days on 40mg per day (40mg for 5 days, then 20mg for next 5 days then 10mg for last 5 days till i see her again...My itching is gone on the 2nd day.( Today is 3rd day on the med).
It works magic.
Oh and I've been having this problem in the last 5 years and been desperate.
Excellent Commentary. Thank You for Sharing Your Experience.
Wow! very educational - excellently explained. Thank you, Doc. God bless. neville sukul
Right on! Thank you for this comprehensive review!
Prednisone is a very important drug, properly prescribed
I got a five day prescription of this to ease an achy and stiff knee. It got rid of the pain within an hour.
Yeah it's a miracle worker for things like that. I had horrible tennis elbow from weight lifting and it made the pain go away completely in less than 48 hrs. Absolutely incredible.
@@independentmind85 do they have symptoms if u stop after 5 days

Doctor gave me this drug for a stuffy nose. No way in hell I’m taking this poison.
It really works like nothing else for sinus relief and allergies. When nothing else does. Being on it for 40 plus years when needed. But I do know it has side effects I just never experienced any. Like I said only as needed.
Very Good Commentary

Imagine being this smart & well informed…😳Kudos, doctor, for so thoroughly explaining the Wonder Drug that can destroy ! 😱 Prednisone was Rxd for me once or twice a year for asthma Sx, as well as outbreaks of poison Ivy, Oak &/or Sumac.
I didn’t think anything of it at the time, as the doses weren’t high, & the use relatively short term. And my arthritic joints never felt better. Unfortunately, I lost both talus (ankle) bones resulting in replacement of these bones (allografts), as well as my left hip due to osteonecrosis (AVN). My R hip is necrotic also, & it’s a matter of time, I’ve been told, before it, too, will need to be replaced. Risk Benefit at its worst…☹️, but I don’t think I could have done without it. *JQ
I’ve been taking prednisolone for over 20 years for lupus. Recently my blood sugar started going up a couple hours after I take the 10mg. So I’ve been trying to taper down (according to doctors advice) but I just can’t get off. When I get down to 4mg I feel the worst I’ve ever felt in my life. I was bed bound for two weeks before I gave up and started again. I really wish I could get off.
WriterBren Lupus is like a curse if there was a real God who loved us it would not happen. this messed up earth of mistakes hidden poisons and Prednisone and other steroids Can make any problems you started with get much worse. You likely wont get off due to your hx if you want quality of life.. you actually will likely have to adjust accordingly with your Dr or NP to control hyperglycemia high blood sugar and osteoporosis low bone density :) ..walk... daily and drink plenty of water .. you have to watch your diet and wt.. i know thats hard.., you can try walking 1-2 miles 5 days a week ( walk in water if you have pain or troubles )
Thats crazy price for prednisone. 10.00 for 30 pills.
I get 1000 pills for 24.00 here at the corner pharmacy in thailand.
Thank you so much for this. I'm 59, have been on it for 2years. Was on 40mg for first 12 months, started decreasing last year 2.5mg month, and now since January on a maintenance dose of 5mg for 12 months. So far I have massive weight gain, osteoporosis, muscle shrinkage, especially in thr legs, they've disappeared, blood pressure is starting to creep up. So far I've avoided diabetes through time restricted eating and fasting, and keep carbs as low as I can. Worried about this coronavirus. Thanks for all your help.
Hi, Re coronavirus, try vitamin D-3, plus lots of vitamin C, maybe 3000 mg per day...L-Lysine and zinc...Eat lots of fruit and veg, maybe garlic too! Good luck!
This happened to me exactly too. Started at 40mg then after 2-1/2 years the very end 2mg.
This happened to me too, when I was 55. Started out at 40 mg then tapered down to 2.5 mg 2-1/2 years later. But then decided to stop my treatment w/Prednisone because I had gained 100 pounds. I was able to lose the 100 pounds by dropping 95% of my bad 🤦♀️ eating habits & educating myself.
Unfortunately I’m now 77, and my illness has returned, and it’s back to the rheumatologist and the 40mgs. I wonder if coffins are available in a size 2X?

I’m so sorry. This sounds unpleasant. Did you recover to some degree? I’m taking 60mg of prednisone for autoimmune disease scarring alopecia lichen planopilaris. My doctor told me the taper off will take 2-3 months. I hope I won’t have osteoperosis. 😔

I thought he said prednisone is a courtesan..
Hi, my mother due to issues with sleep went from 2mg to 1mg Prednisone for a long time and then stopped completely recently but has been experiencing a complete loss of appetite. She also suffers from hypothyroidism and I noticed that her TSH levels have dropped around 30% as currently 1.78 but her usual levels are usually in the 1.20s yet has remained on the same dose of 75mg levothyroxine. I just wish to know if this is common?
Does prednisone offset ssri (Zoloft) tinnitus?
@mariamauk Steroids can offset your immune adrenal glands brain and all the cells that run your body in order out of order. tinnitus is one of the least things it could develop. Tinnitus is also not an ear problem for its more a deep in the areas of the Brain.
Prednisone made a relative of mine act so crazy it was horrifying. Got off it, and he was back to normal. Go figure.
It worked but Cortizone shot was detrimental
How come some doctors dont like to prescribe it?
Because although it's a miracle drug in the long term it has horrible side effects like
Increased blood sugar and blood pressure, suppressed immunity, weight gain, moon face and buffalo like neck, increased eye pressure, injured stomach and many more so basically you should only take it if you really need it or if there aren't other medicines for your disease
This is a bit of wanting the time and, instead, getting the history of the clock. Not terribly useful for my inquiry.
Prescribed prednisone 50mg for a week and to taper 5mg every week total of 9 weeks for high inflammation in entire colon. Is Prednisone the correct protocol and any suggestions to help the side effects? Taking Vitamin D3 with it. Thank you

@@imassage619 About 5 yr ago I had a sinus infection, so my doctor prescribed me Bactrim. At the end of that course my Uvula was swollen so big it was lying on my tongue. I ended up in the ER. They gave me a boost of Prednisone there and a 1wk dosepack w no taper. At the end of that course, I had a severe reaction. I became extremely weak, was puking bile, could barely eat, my throat was course. I lost a bunch of weight, I was lying in the bathroom thinking I could die. My muscles started to ache really bad, terrible mood swings. Months later I had kidney stones, which may have not been related. I think it permanently gave me some back problems and lowered my T levels. None
