I just made my 1st top. Took 20 minutes to get my stick of wood squared up in the chuck, 1 minute to turn it to shape, and a millisecond to get a catch that threw the block off wood out of balance again. Success

I noticed that you upgraded to CBN wheels for sharpening. Your tops look great. I like all the variety of colors and combinations. That look like they’re easy to make.
No, Dad is storing a lot of stuff here while they find a new house so I'm using it. Make some.
They're easy if you've practised to his level of skill. I can make 5 tops in a 100 days:-)

I really enjoyed this video, had to laugh when i saw how you were collecting the shavings for posterity. Cool as always. I've made a couple but never seem to get these as clean as you do - I always seem to need to sand them... In the time you make 100, I can maybe make 1!

What kind of wood were you using for those and were they just pen blanks or pieces that cut for that?
6/4 and 8/4 hard maple depending upon size toy stores want.
When I was a kid in the 60's attending Catholic grade school the nuns had these aluminum bodied black magic markers with the felt tip and they were refillable. I still remember the smell of the them wafting around the classroom while they were being filled. The felt tips could be replaced too! I think they would work great filled with the colored wood stains you can purchase these days. The felt tips could be cut down into different widths. Maybe "worth the effort" to see if they can still be purchased. They had a heavy screw on aluminum cap that would survive being stepped on.
Good idea ten littleindians! Sharpie tips blunt pretty quick ;^(
Big issue is drying time. Sharpies are almost instantaneous.
Light touch, slow speed. Cheap to replace...

Is my math correct? 5min x 60sec/minute equals total f 300 sec divided by 100 tops equals 3 sec/top. That is incredible.

depends upon toy store request. I use 6/4 or 8/4.

I know your video is a bit old but I do hope you see this and answer my question. Have you thought about doing these with stabilized wood and resin or would you think the weight be off and the top not spin right?
Business question. How much time, effort, material and expense would that add and would it add a commensurate value to a kid spinning it? No, for the price I wholesale these that kind of stuff doesn't enter my mind. I'm more focused on eliminating steps, speeding things up, without diminishing value.
And this isn't an old video. I have stuff going back a decade and more.

lol only if you speed it up 4X I think there are 100 there. i counted them. lol Too much coffee this early. Now slow it down and give us a real vid, I have never made these, they look straight forward. but always good to get tips from the master.
