  • Make a few dozen spinning tops and you'll soon develop skills you'll find useful no matter what you're turning.
For in-depth explanations of the tools and techniques you need to refer to Richard Raffan’s woodturning books and videos. www.richardraffan.com.au/book...

When I first started wood turning many, many years ago, I bought a VHS video of Richard Raffan and learned so much by watching. I find myself doing the same thing now. He is a born teacher and a highly skilled turner.

The split screen with the eye-level and overhead views is extremely helpful in that it enables me and the other students to see the angles of the tools in relation to the wood. Also, this is a wonderful and delightful topic for a video. Who doesn't like tops?! Thank you very much.

I love making tops. They make everyone smile. I even think I heard you giggling! Fun project. Thanks.

I love the way you talk us through what you are doing and why, and in real time. This is so helpful. I've been turning for about 6 years or so and still learning. Thank you for starting this new channel and sharing your knowledge and skills. Much appreciated .

I am starting my skew chisel practice and I look for this video to make something I can give to children to make them (and me) happy.

You cannot get much simpler than that.

Richard in one of your videos on spinning tops you mention the angel being best if it was either greater or less than 90 deg. I have been through a couple of the videos and cannot find where you mentioned the angle. I am having trouble with my tops NOT spinning well and was hoping the angel is the issue. Cheers

I go for an angle of 45° off the lathe axis which is 90° included angle when you look at the top from the side. A wider included angle seems to work better as it keeps the weight lower. The great thing with tops is that they don't take long to turn, so you can experiment. th-cam.com/video/Xxpo_HjCmU8/w-d-xo.html

Revelation; remove any wood that does not include what you are turning!!
