It was the jury that decided it was manslaughter (not murder) and the Judge must follow the sentencing guidelines for the crime he was found guilty of. He cannot give a sentence for murder when the jury decided unanimously it wasn't.

The way he would look at Brianna and her family during their impact statements looked like if looks could kill, they'd be dead. There are young kids who killed their own child, and they've all gotten life. Corey and his maternal side didn't get justice.
