I agree with the other commenter..
Yours is one of the best DIY stand videos.
-If you are in earthquake or tremor zones, you may want the paneling to rise up to retain the tank from falling off of the stand.
Nicely done for the rest of us.. 😊

Love the build. One tip, the top piece (plywood) could have used some wood banding around it make it look a little bit better.

Having been a physics student, I see the force(aquarium weight) one some stand builds is acting on the screws/bolts, which could fatigue and sheer. I would really trust your stands for the larger aquariums as you correctly have the top platform beams fixed to the TOP of the upright beams, rather than bolted to the sides.

This is one of best videos on stand builds I've seen. One thing is I would use one solid sheet of 1/4 inch for the face so the grain matches. Other than that very thorough walk through.

Strong framing & you used oak with nice tight joints that look great. I assume you have a table saw along with other woodworking tools. "In my opinion" those doors don't match the stand. Maybe redesign & re-do those doors. Use 1 x 3 oak for the door frame and then use the thin oak for the recessed door facing to match the rest of the build.

Excellent point about the cost of stands at the stores. 200 to 400 is about what you'll pay for a stand made of cheap construction, flimsy wood, and in the low end stands...staples instead of screws. If you don't have the skills, time, or tools to build one yourself, you can pay someone to do it. You still save money and you get a sturdy, quality stand.

Great tutorial, is the plywood the best material for such stands?

    • @Subi_doo
      @Subi_doo 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Plynwood is. I wouldn’t use OSB or MDF because these will swell and absorb water. I also wouldn’t get the “sheathing” plywood if you doing an outer cabinet skin. Had he made the top solid, sheathing ply could have been used for that to save cost because it’s not seen. Finish sanded ply is good for aesthetics and looks good stained. Both are equally as strong.

    • @icarlsw34

I wouldn't say they are over priced. You are paying for someone else to assemble the stand for you and some are quite beautiful and functional. If I compare Aquarium stands to other pieces of furniture they are actually quite cheap by comparison.

I got a question for you and all of the stand makers out there. @ or about 2:55 of the video. You show a level being used. I see that often in tutorials about building an
aquarium stand. But my question is....did you put the level on the floor in the place where the aquarium will go ? And then of course is the question...did you make absolutely
sure which way the floor joist run ? You have very close to 800 Lbs there and I don't want to be anywhere near you if the floor joist run the same as the length of the tank.

Mine has a little warp to it but I figure when the 125 gallon is set on it, it will settle down with the weight. I'm stuck on my door ideas, I like your doors...simple and looks nice.

Could you use 1x4's as the first structure pieces instead of 2x4's since you are putting additional 2x4's in the corners? Seems like you could get away with it in order to get more width for a sump.

Why does everyone use 2x4's?...the ones in the stores that sell for $$$$ don't do that I believe...they use MDF/plywood with veneer and 1x4's...just seems 2x4 is over kill..guess better safe than sorry ..as long as the outside is wrapped nicely and looks good....nice job though. I need to build something for my 75G..i don't like the stand I got with it..(bought it used..it's one of those put together from Petsmart made of mdf..black with a lower shelf and 2 upper doors..I want a cabinet where I can put a refugium). I was thinking of building one and wrapping it in cherry veneer over plywood..doing it in a shaker style. I think the main thing is the legs need to be adequate so they carry the weight straight to the floor as I read by some engineer types. I might follow your form..and use 1/2 ply with cherry and use rail/style design on the sides pieces (1/2 x 3 and 1/2 x 4) to cover the nails etc and the front frame out of 1x3 and 1x4 solid cherry and shaker style inset doors. Want it to match my shaker furniture.

Yes, the 2 x 4's probably are a bit over kill. I wanted to make sure it could hold all the
weight for the deep substrate bed for the plants.
My 125 G reef stand is a store bought made by Marine land. And, it's a lot lighter than my homemade 75 G
stand lol. Plus, it consist of only three braces across the width of the aquarium:
one across each end and one in the middle.

This stand is wayyyyy overkill. A single 2x4 can support a vertical load over a 1,000lbs at longer lengths than you have here. With shorter studs, your bending moments are lower and it can support even more weight. Your 75 gal aquarium weighs less than 1,000lbs.
