We were on the very last Big Red boat criuse. They were giving all of the Looney Toons merch away. The ship was repainted and sold to MSC. Many of the crew and wait staff found new homes with Disney.

Thanks for this - it warmed my heart. We took a Big Red Boat Disney Cruise on the SS Oceanic in 1986 - about 17 years after my parents took their honeymoon cruise on the same ship. At the time of my parents' trip, she was sailing under the Home Lines flag. My aunt, a professional ballroom dancer, also entertained aboard her for a few years in the late 60's. Oceanic was a truly magical ship. I was so sad when Premiere ended their Disney partnership. I later found out that after being seized in the Bahamas in 2000 when Premiere went under, she sailed for a Spanish cruise line out of Barcelona for a while and then sailed around the world as a Peace Boat - even to narrowly escape an attack by Yemenese pirates 2010. She ended her very full and nearly 50 year life in 2012 - Cruise ships just don't usually last that long - being scrapped in China. The news of her demise hit me as if I was hearing that the Millennium Falcon had been scrapped. There will never be another like her.

Our “package” with our 3 kids in 1993 included cruise only. Loved it! The food was excellent! The service excellent! The LooneyTunes characters were memorable! My god! What a wonderful time we had!

We also sailed the Big Red Boat in 1993 with the Looney Tunes characters. I've been trying to figure out what the private island was that we stopped at. I don't think it was the same one Disney later used.

Sad but true. Now we see Disney imploding from what? Poor management, greed? I don't know but it seems the American dream is going down like the Titanic. Pray for America.

I have fond memories of the Big Red Boat. It was Spring Break 1994 and I was in my high school's jazz band, Breakaway. We went on tour every year....this was the first year it was a cruise. I actually still have my cruise card. I have some pics of the boat if anyone is interested. A very dear friend passed away from a brain tumor in 2008 and I will always have the memories of us running through the halls at 3:00 a.m. with him and 10 other half-drunk high school musicians!!!! Long live the Blue Star Brigade and Breakaway...... some of the best years of my life. Saxophone, I played alto saxophone, primarily.

I sailed on the Oceanic in 1994....when I was 4 (with my parents of course) It was the Warner Bros characters. That was so cool getting to do that. The Oceanic was built more like an ocean liner than a cruise ship. You should make a video special on the life of the Oceanic!

I had friends working on the Big Red Boat and when they went bankrupt all of the crewmembers were stranded in port in Nassau Bahamas.
I was actually working on the Disney magic during this time and it was horrible seeing how upset these people were and how badly they were treated.

Greetings from Skagway, Alaska! My little town basically exists because of cruise ships, and the Disney Wonder will be docking here tomorrow morning. I've never worked with that particular ship, but it's always neat to learn history, and even cooler when it's at the intersection of two things you're interested in, like Disney and cruise ships.
Thank you for yet another great video :)

The Big Red Boat! Sailed 3 times on the Big Red Boat with Mickey and Friends with the Cruise & Park packages. I just loved those cruises! Nothing fancy like today's DCL but affordable and a real blast! I've been on DCL three times and enjoyed it but I still have those incredible memories of the Disney Premier Big Red Boat. Definitely my favorite cruises!

Thank you for the memories! I was a passenger on the FantaSea cruise when I was just a month away from turning 7. My mom was a travel agent and had the inside scoop on this. I don't remember a whole lot, but generally loved the whole experience. A few things seem to be lost to history, though. First, we actually didn't end up visiting Nassau because of bad weather. I remember my parents being pretty upset about that. Secondly, one day when we were going back to the boat (from one of the Virgin Islands, I think) there was a nasty storm and there were 30-50 foot waves. The tenders would ride the wave up and as it rolled underneath, we would drop straight down and slam back into the sea. Most of the passengers treated it like a roller coaster ride and were having fun with it. My father was a navy veteran, and he was terrified because he knew the danger we were in. Then the tenders would pull up beside the Norway and a huge wave would come and slam the two ships together... then as the wave receded the ships would pull apart. When they came together, there was about a 3-4 second window where they would throw the plank and guests would run across. I remember seeing the crew members' bloody hands as the ropes ripped through as the boats pulled apart. It was truly a "women and children first" situation. One of the crew members took me and my younger sister in his arms and ran us across to safety, as we waited for my parents. It was scary, and an absolute miracle that nobody died in the whole ordeal. The captain hosted a celebration dinner with champagne for all adults.

I went on the big red boat in 91 or 92. It sad that I don’t remember the year. I can tell you that it was the first cruise after it came out of drydock because it caught fire. We were scheduled to go on the ship the cruise after it caught fire. I remember we had our bags packed. My brothers and I were so excited to go. Then the 11 PM news the night before we were set to board showed that the ship had caught fire and so our cruise had to be rescheduled.
When we did sail on it, I really enjoyed my experience and to this day it was probably the best cruise I had been on. I loved that we spent all four days with access to the cruise lines private island. If you wanted to go to ports of call you took a little boat over to the Bahamas. My grandma who took us was like the ports are so blah. She had booked this particular cruise because we would be at the private island the entire time. At that time I did not realize how lovely it was there. Now I hope to see a cruise line offer that same set up. If Disney did a 4 day cruise to Castaway Cay I would be the first in line to sign up. I was 16 I think so I hung out at the kids club and after the club shut down all of us older teens would run in a pack (or agony which is the correct term for a group of teenagers) around the ship. We spent a lot of time in the movie theater watching movies. Hanging around the pool etc. I have some really fond memories of that cruise. Nearly 30 years later I am still friends with someone I met on that cruise.
The food was so much better than some current cruise ships today. I was so underwhelmed by carnivals food that it really made me miss that experience on the big red boat. It may have been expensive but it was worth every penny.

I liked it I thought you could cover the island that Premier did for the Disney cruises. That played a huge role in Premier in dropping the Disney Brand. The channel that was cut to the island was small and only one ship could get in and out of that channel. The island was set up as a pirate theme island where the would kidnap guest and bring them to the island. It was really the highlight to what was a great experience. But Premier the corp could not control the captain who favored the Port of Nassau.

Hi Rob. I really like all of your videos. I love your reports of the Disney History. Keep up the good work. I had the misfortune of taking my family on the Big Red Boat. I have always ranked it as the worst vacation I had ever taken. Although I remember the ship as being fine, they just didn't offer enough for you to do. There were never multiple things to do. So when they had an event of any kind it was always so crowded that you couldn't enjoy it or going to another activity. What an expensive mess it was. I'm so glad Disney started its own cruise line.

I took a cruise with my family on the Big Red Boat in the mid 90s. It was a great Disney themed cruise, however, nothing near today's standards. We took a tender from Nassau to Salt Cay, Bahamas. It was a nice rustic island, the predecessor to Castaway Cay. Salt Cay is just NE of Nassau. CC is about 60 miles NNW of Salt Cay, near (west of) Great Abaco.

As a child we did the big red boat and Disney world. It must of been right after the contract was not renewed, but “trip packages” were already sold. We spent three days/two nights on the BRB and did the all the Disney parks and stay at a Disney hotel. I remember being very confused why on the boat Tweety Bird had tucked us in one night but gave us a Disney stuffed animal. I was old enough to know they were not the same company and think it was odd, but didn’t put much thought into it at the time.
Also remember when Disney was advertising their own cruise line, feeling like we had miss out by having the BRB instead.

I attended a corporate sponsored cruise on The Big Red Boat Oceanic in February of 1995. There were still people doing the Disney cruise/vacation deal then, but there were neither any Disney nor Looney Tunes characters affiliated with the cruise at the time. The company folded not too long (a few years) after that.

Yeah. I couldn't track down any publicly disclosed reasoning for the decision (after all, most of these companies don't want to burn bridges), but my suspicion is that they just got a better licensing deal with WB that saved them money. I'm sure like everyone else they assumed Disney would just try to find a new partner rather than start their own competing cruise line.

    • @CalebHimself
      @CalebHimself 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Rob Plays There is some irony to be found in there. Although Premier was doing well with Disney, they dropped their relationship together for what I would assune to be a more appealing deal with Warner Bros money wise. But this would ultimately lead to their bankruptcy.

I went on the Big Red Boat in '95. It was in a package with 2 days at Disneyworld and then 3 days on the boat to Nassau. It was a bit of whiplash because we went from Disney characters to Looney Toons characters.BTW, I only remember seeing those Looney Toons characters once on the entire cruise - when we set sail. They danced around to the song "Mony Mony" that the MC had changed the lyrics to include Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, which was just bizarre, like the crew for a second forgot that they had a different set of characters now.
The rest of the cruise was an absolute bore for me as an 11 year-old. There was a room with free slurpies and karaoke, but I don't remember there being a ton of other planned activities.

My intent was specifically to gloss over the rest once they parted ways with Disney. I even toyed with not adding the little I did about premiere after they split. The video is about Disney and Premiere, not Premiere in general.

They're streamers. Throwing confetti and streamers overboard at sail away parties was a long time tradition between those on the ship and those watching their loved ones leaving. It has since been ended on cruises for obvious environmental reasons.

1998 ? No it was 1988 when the Disney Cruise Line Big Red Boat was cruising the Florida Seas to the Caribbean. How do I know it was 1998 is because I was in the Disney Cruise around 1998 to 1990 with Premier Cruise Line on the Big Red Boat
