I think Gonzo, Rizzo, and Pepe would be go great as a trio who preform defying stunts that seems impossible. Like them doing a tightrope act, while all three are in a triangle position, as beavers starts to naw on the supports.
I actually liked them as the "writers" for the Miss Piggy show on the ABC show from 2015. It was a clever use of those three together, but I would love to see them pull off some stunts. I could see Pepe trying to persuade Gonzo or Rizzo into doing something crazy while he just sat back and watched.
The Muppets Most Wanted I thought was a solid real-feeling muppets movie. And the show “the muppets.” (The one where piggy has a talk show) did a lot to flesh out Pepe and some of the others
I really enjoyed The Muppets tv show a lot. It's a shame that ABC didn't give it time to find a groove, but it did really play to Pepe's strengths. I'm hoping they can launch a real show on Disney+ in the coming years that reinvents The Muppets in a similar way.
"These puppets are not just characters up there telling jokes. If you just stand there and tell jokes, the whole thing will die. The humor only holds if there's a visual interaction between the characters."- Jim Henson
In his most recent interview Frank Oz (close friend of Jim Henson, one of the most important muppet performers ever) said that Leigh Slaughter (current VP of The Muppets Studio) has been working hard to change how Disney treats the muppets, and he said he thinks their intent has completely changed now. We still don't know what the next Muppet production is gonna be but I think Frank Oz's confidence in the current leadership is a really good sign.
Let’s see them get Steve Whitmire back as Kermit, then I’ll be impressed... Matt Vogel is doing nice as his replacement, but I miss Whitmire’s performance
Bill is the most talented since the original core group. His improv and "new" characters are the best. It is one of the reasons why he and Matt should cut down on the number of legacy characters that they perform so that they can more freely interact with other characters. Peter Linz should be Kermit so Matt is free to do other characters.
I'd agree that Bill has really added something great to the usual team. As far as Matt goes, I'm kind of now buying into him being the legacy character guy. His version of Kermit has grown on me.
I'm glad he is growing on you because it is still rough for me...maybe I just need more time. Matt is a talented dude but I'd rather see him do Deadly and develop him into a star. Deadly and Piggy were such a great combo. I worry because Matt is Kermit, Big Bird and Count...and..and.. Sure the original cast had a lot of characters but it doesn't seem like giving that many legacy characters to one performer is ideal.
Truthfully the cast of puppeteers needs to expand. They are reliant on just a handful of people and it does put limitations on what characters can interact. Having more people would also make it easier to hand off those characters in time to the next generation of performers when that time comes.
Agree..Peter is amazing. Matt needs to focus on his strong points. Muppets haunted mansion is my favorite. Bill is a worthy addition to Jim and Frank's legacy. Funny and quick.
I think he was completely meant for that show. It really did suit him. I think he also works best when he is chatting on an interview show or something because he is such a ridiculous character. The interviewer can play the normal person while he gets weird.
The new Muppet characters in 2020 have been few and far between. We have Walter from the 2011 which has been fixed into the Muppet cast as a regular, and now we have Joe From Legal, the weasel from Muppets Now. That's it. Disney needs to let the Muppeteers create new characters again.
You could also make the argument that you can also reinvigorate minor characters like Uncle Deadly and give them a more robust personality. Uncle Deadly is really more of a Matt Vogel character now.
It would help if they hired new Muppeteers. Disney has with people who have worked on the franchise for decades. Jim Henson was always hiring new puppeteers for different projects, each bringing something individual to the table.
Pepe is the best Muppet ever, in every sense. He's ridiculous from the get-go: a prawn puppet. Let's see Mr. Rogers try that. His build is also extravagant, outlandish, and laugh-out-loud funny just standing still doing nothing. And of course we have the personality that Barretta breathes into him. It reminds me of the meld that existed between Jim and Kermit, that's sadly irreplaceable. (I've loved Kermit since he was invented, and admire those who've activated him since Jim died, but that relationship is just never going to be seen again.) Along with the rats, I think Pepe could have, and still could, reinvent the Muppets as the adult comedy Jim always wanted them to be, and put them back into our lives as household names.
I thought the Muppets Christmas Carol was a mostly critical and moderately financial success. So was Muppet Treasure Island, but not so much as the former.
I think one of the problems is that Disney doesn't hire and train any new puppeteers whatsoever. Jim Henson always kept his troupe expanding to keep things fresh. The Jim Henson Company and Sesame Workshop still hold puppeteer workshops to scout out new talent.
1:56 He wasn't brand new. He debuted in 1989 on The Jim Henson Hour. Clifford even appeared in Henson's final public appearance on The Arsenio Hall Show!
I feel like the Muppets film in 2010’s feels like a rehash of what came before. I enjoyed Pepe and his appearance in Muppets shows and film. Talk about having a fresh take on the old show.
Fond memories. Thanks for sharing your passion, this was great. Liked and subscribed from a small TH-camr comedian. Excited to watch your journey and creations 😃
i at first didn't like pepe,.... but i get him now i grew up with the original "muppet show" and i saw a little of "muppets tonight" and i think your right, new characters help a show, and a cast grow.

@@ModernMouse Thanks! On the topic of the Muppets evolving, I think what Kermit and the gang need in order to become as big as they were in the 80s is they need a combo of The Muppet Show and the ABC show.
