Power lines are literally everywhere there are people. No place is so far from power lines that a balloon can't accidentally wander into them, or there wouldn't be a launch or landing site near it.

This pilot had no business operating a hot air balloon. He killed those passengers. 100% pilot error. I can't imagine the horror those passengers felt. 😞

Ever talk to a balloon operator? They brag 'I could take off 10 miles west of you and land 10 miles north or south of you by catching different direction winds at different altitudes'. But when invited to do so because I don't want them in my crop, they never can. Then an accident happens and it's like they couldn't see it coming. Too bad it wasn't 16 balloon 'pilots' in this balloon instead of 1 and 15 innocent passengers.
This is the reason I don't do things like this. I agree it would be awesome to do but something can go wrong in a second May all the victims rest in paradise ameen.

2nd balloon tragedy in the USA involving multiple deaths I've watched today & the most obvious common link to me; a You Tube viewer is that both pilot's involved look like & i don't wish to offend here but they both look like aging hippies, with their long hair & tie-dyed t shirts! I don't know how experienced the 2 were but if i'm going airborne i want my pilot to reach a certain level of professionalism & be serious about the flight & everything connected to it. Complacency has no place in such a potentially dangerous past-time. BTW, i'm an aging hippy type.
@StrawberryCake since the pilot was a hard core drug addiction, he was not competent to operate the balloon with paying passengers, and violated the trust they gave him. He was a scumbag to be so high on hard drugs & still think he could safely operate this balloon.

There's no jumping from that height. Let alone teaching everyone how to use the parachute beforehand
