Came across this thru a search and Jay, you are a savior! I've been doing videography and when it came to photography (real estate to be specific), I always went for the one shot and color correct it. Now I got a crash course on how to HDR thanks to you and awesome to see the settings made for the A7C. Hopefully you have an updated video when the A74 comes out. Thanks again!!! Subscribed!
HI Jay, many many thanks for all these tutorials. I am just back into photography as a retirement hobby in 2022 with a new Sony a6400 . major learning curve after film many many years ago and a deliberate challenge choosing this camera to test and exercise my brain. I saw many many folks moaning about Sony menus and took this as a challenge. I am constantly watching your videos , not just for the a6400 but many other Sony cameras to pick up more and more info. just watching your HDR /A7C tutorial and learning lots.! many thanks, keep up the great and much appreciated tutorials. best regards.
Love your tutorial here. I come back and watch it occasionally and always learn more things about the A7c. Tonight I feel I have finally become super confident about my HDR images for the best possible results.
Great explanation into hdr & camera settings. I've been doing real estate photography flash/ambient blend since 2015 but struggled with hdr, everything just to over baked no matter what I did. First I purchase Photomatix then Aurora and still images were terrible. Maybe I'll try one last time with this software. Love your videos Jay, really appreciate what you contribute.
@@Jason_Hermann I really like your videos and lens reviews. Watched the Tamron 28-200 and Sony 24-105 ones. They were very helpful. I am going to have to try the HDR tomorrow at sunset.
Hi again and thank you for this tutorial. Just a note that Lightroom can combine multiple exposures without dedicated third party HDR software. Simply multi-select (control click) the images from the bottom film strip, then right click over any of the selected images. From the pop-up menu choose "photo merge-HDR". Lightroom will create a new single image with the exposures blended. Not as powerful a tool as third party HDR, but it works well. Also, it seems like Sony has dropped in-camera HDR (auto-HDR) from the A7-C II. Major bummer as I used that feature frequently on my previous A7 III model. If it is in the A7-C II and I missed it, please let me know how to find it! Thanks.
Wow, thank you so much for the detailed tutorial. Just what I needed to get started with my new a7c. How did you end up with the 25 second exposure time? Did it do that automatically with the settings you provided us with? When I take some pictures in the bracked mode they're all with fairly high shutterspeeds. Did I miss something here? Nonetheless the pictures are turning out amazing. Ps. I began with zero knowledge, this was really helpful!
I'm really glad the video helped you out! As far as the 25seconds goes, it was just darker outside and that was the shutter speed. I did not do anything in particular different.
Can the ZV-E10 combine multiple shots similar to this while shooting in jpg and not post processing on the computer? I think in the beginner guide you showed how the camera can take 3 or 5 pictures and it processes “in-camera” … would I set to iso priority, do I do bracketing, what would I want my settings to be? or do you recommend I just work with the styles like portrait or landscape as a beginner?
Yeah it's called Auto HDR and you can enable it when using jpeg quality here: MENU → (Camera Settings1) → [DRO/Auto HDR] → [Auto HDR] More info: helpguide.sony.net/ilc/2070/v1/en/contents/TP0001140458.html?search=auto%20hdr
Jay, nice introduction to what can be accomplished when using HDR with the a7c. I now have some new things to consider when shooting moving water using HDR. Excellent suggestion about reviewing the images in the bracket set to be sure that the detail in the highlights and shadows is adequately captured by the exposure range of the set.
I don't know but it is the A7C I go to use it and see a great picture and the bracketing has changed. So upsetting. I don't know what to do?à@@Jason_Hermann
You certainly can shut it off, but I don't think it's necessary. The camera knows when it's on something solid and I never had an issue leaving it on ;)
Yes I am aware, thanks! I still don't though and have never had an issue, because the camera recognizes when on a tripod and does not engage the stabilization. Of course shutting it off would be best practice when using a tripod though, but with literally years of no issue I personally don't think it's necessary.
The Lightroom photo merge function does work decent, but is not comparable at all to the HDR Efex Pro software power and versatility with presets and controls.
@@Jason_Hermann yeah, I bought the suite, it's actually pretty nice. It's weird that your have them as seperate links. I thought those were $100 seperately at which point I was thinking the HDR Efex wouldn't be worth it. One thing I did notice about the HDR Efex is that its doesn't seem to like to merge more than 3 images. That's annoying because I had gotten used to combining 9 images when I was bracket shooting. I guess I could just change the setting, but overall it is pretty nice. I'm going to experiment with some of the other programs and see what I can create.
With the Sony a7c with "proxy recording" video capabilities, is there any advantage/disadvantage to using the "proxy" recorded video for film/video projects? I see the proxy videos are about 1/3 or 1/4 the size of the regular videos. Is there any quality loss or degradation?
Proxy recording is a tool to help speed up your workflow in post processing. It's just a lower quality/ lower resolution version of your main video. Therefore, editing is way faster on older computers when using there "proxy". However, when the video is rendered for output, it will use the "real" video footage and give you that 4k quality. You can also create proxy media in post processing software for the same purpose, but that is time consuming which is why Sony offers it on the camera. With all that being said, no you don't want to use the proxy video for you actual footage, because it's lower quality and resolution.
@@Jason_Hermann Thanks! Approximately, how far back is the camera from you? at 70mm, is that like at 10 feet away? Maybe I'm not thinking in the full frame world correctly yet. I'm coming from a canon t6i
Absolutely and you can also access the drive modes from the default function menu, but mine is modified, because I just press the button on the dial when I need it.
Ok...so....every other day there's an issue with my new sony a7c! Now...when I look at pics on my memory card in camera, some of my files are saying, "Unable to display". WTF???
Did you put the card into a computer to get the files off? Sometimes that messes up the memory card and has nothing to do with the camera. I've heard of this a few times over the years with various cameras and using Windows computers.
@@Jason_Hermann thanks for getting back to me. Yeah I took the card out and put it into my MacBook pro. Naturally I downloaded the files from the card onto my computer. I put the card back in my camera and only some files show that display unable to display. I can't have problems like this, especially if I'm on a professional photo shoot. What is the remedy for this? Putting the card into a memory card reader first and then putting it into my computer?
Excellent video. Thanks for such a detailed overview of the process. Loved your photos. Keep sharing :)
Thanks

Using the link I (re)installed Lightroom, but should I actually be using Lightroom Classic?
I use Lightroom Classic myself and would recommend that if using a PC. Lightroom mobile is better for iPads and stuff, but I don't use that.
Thanks for going over the steps several times to help them sink in.

@@Jason_Hermann thanks so much! You’ve really taught me a lot in just a few videos!
Which software u r using to make HDR
Is hdr efex pro much better than lightrooms bult in hdr merger?
I think so yes, but HDR Efex is getting pretty old nowadays also...
hey! great video :) but can we shoot videos in 4K HDR?
Well the camera has the HLG profile which is sort of HDR video, but you need to grade the video in post processing after the fact.

Can also be done on the Sony crop cameras also.
Yes, pretty much all the Sony cameras work the same way, but older models do not have the self timer with bracketing feature.
I keep finding that the bracketing settings change. I don't use my camera for a few days and the bracketing has changed. A real upsetting situation?
That is odd? What camera, and how is it changing?

While shooting on a tripod you should to turn off in-built steadyshot or optical steadyshot.
You certainly can shut it off, but I don't think it's necessary. The camera knows when it's on something solid and I never had an issue leaving it on ;)
@@Jason_Hermann this is not my opinion this is Sony's recommendation, just check out the official information on their website.

I'm foing to have to pick up color effects pro, maybe the HDR one too, but LR already has a photo merge function. Is the HDR effects much better?

So it can't combine the images in the camera?
Auto HDR can, but the real deal HDR does not, you do the work in post processing. Auto HDR requires you too use Jpeg mode.
What if we dont have this software? Then this process doesnt work
You need some kind of HDR software, but not necessary the one I used. There are tons of them out there if you do a search.
To do this faster, you can just hit left on the control wheel to get into drive mode instead of going into the menu.
Yes, and then use the control dial to quickly go to the desired option within each drive mode.

hai how big can we print this image?
40x60" no problem, but you can go even larger for sure!
Is that software free?
