Years ago, I did the pilgrimage to Salem, Massachusetts. I went to Laurie Cabot’s store and was stopped in my tracks when I saw “her” BOS on display & for sale. Confused & curious as to why her BOS was on sale let alone publicly available, I inspected it more closely. It was a nicely decorated product for purchase, along with some others. I was sadly disappointed to see something labeled a BOS, a sacred tool imo, reduced to a marketing tactic for tourists 😢
i remember i went into a 'witchy store' in my local area. it was empty and smelled really strong. i picked up a gorgeous leather bound book and i was very curious what i might be for, it was next to some other 'normal' planners but this was blank! wow. so, i was a shy goth 11 year old, and had my pocket money ready in my other fist to buy this seemingly astonishing book. the lady at the counter rudely barged over to me and yanked the book out of my hand and declared this was not for me, and when i asked what it was for and why it was so special she blurted out 'its a book of shadows, youll never understand and i want you to leave'. its perhaps bittersweet as resources are now more readily available online but theyre also much more commodified. i probably wont find a book of that valour (in my mind) and its been well over a decade since i saw it; as Temu and the like are chock full of this cheap and 'manufactured' shite we have available nowadays - which then get resold at local markets! ahhhh!!!
My god! Thank you! You just solved a mystery! I’ve been up all night wondering why i haven’t seen the Aurora when everyone else has. But after watching your video and consulting my scrapbook of shadows i now know that it is because even great aunt Gladys has disowned me, so she didn’t bother communicating via the aurora borealis 😂😂
So, lemme see if I got this: our ancestors are unable to communicate with us in some simple, direct way but are capable of causing a grand scale natural phenomenon to do so? m'kay 😂
You do my heart good. I don’t have to whistle like a kettle while the steam comes out my ears anymore, I can watch you do it and have a giggle instead.
I laughed so hard at "frustrated scrapbookers." I do like to look at how beautiful their artwork is. I think for some folks the act of creating the book is a powerful meditation but I'm definitely more of a notebook gal.
Creating something as an act of meditation is a lovely thing. I just don't think it's a Book of Shadows or a Grimoire, though.... I'm so untidy in mine....
@@GrumpyOldCroneso because you’re untidy - that means because I’m tidy -unlike you- it’s less valuable? What a retard take. That’s like saying a quilter who makes gorgeous quilts but is tidy, is less talented than a quilter with a messy sewing room. You’re just trying to be edgy/fringe. It ain’t that deep babe
I completely love your videos! As an old Crone, practicing for a very long time, you make me laugh at the absurdities of modern Craft, and the beauty of living with it. Thank you!
I relate to the eyeliner mirror thing so hard. I am severely visually impaired, but still put myself through putting on makeup each day. No, mirrors do not bend inward. I laughed so hard. Thanks!
You are so funny, lol! I’m in my early fifties, and I know EXACTLY what you mean about the 👓 😂! I’m not on TickTock so I hadn’t heard about the ancestor aurora thing. That’s hilarious. Of course, I’m sure our ancestors did hold it as a message or omen. I’ve seen it a few times growing up, and was always awed by it. I live in Texas, USA now so it’s too far south to see it. I almost choked on my drink when you made some comment about “frustrated scrap bookers”😂. I’m a novice witch, only since 2020. I found witchcraft on TH-cam during the pandemic and realized I’ve always been a witch. Of course, Wicca-esque information was what I came across first, all these young influencers. I’ve never been really good with keeping a books of shadows, but I regularly keep a “Book of Mirrors” for tarot readings and other divination reflections. I also keep private thoughts about my spiritual development and interactions with various deities and spirits. I do love crafting and art and am developing as an art witch so I do love decorating with stickers, coloring book images, envelopes, etc… but it’s more like for either helping me remember new information or as part of a spell with my intention being imbued as I create with materials I’ve charged. I do like watching those videos because sometimes they inspire me for spells or study pages. You’ve been practicing since before it “was cool”. I do feel that some witchy content is more about the aesthetic rather than actual spell craft. It must be frustrating at times for you to see skills you’ve worked in and built when it was a less socially acceptable way of life be paraded as arts projects rather than the serious magical arts they are. Thanks for the tips on drying flowers and herbs. Your hand fasting sounds absolutely wonderful! Idk if you’ve ever considered a video covering the basics, but I’d love to see that. My nephew and his husband had a hand fasting a couple of years ago on Halloween. It was awesome (although most family members are uncomfortable with the LGBT community and witchcraft here in the south. Btw, if you feel like sharing that homemade cheddar broccoli bake recipe- I love to cook, and that sounds awesome. Blessed be. ❤
Welcome to Grumpy Old Crone! It's lovely to have you along for the ride. Sorry I've been out of the loop for a while - I went to a festival and ended up with covid :-( I think you are spot on with the aesthetic thing. Real witchcraft doesn't care how it looks. I will absolutely do a video on handfasting - there seems to be a dearth of information out there. Right, back on to planning the next video!
Frustrated scrapbookers is spot on! "Book of Shadows" is a term that originated in traditional Wicca, coined by Gardner. Like other Wiccan elements, it's been borrowed and the purpose lost on those who get their knowledge (cough) from blogs & social media. Traditionally, the BOS contains what's passed on from initiate to initiate while personal grimoires/spellbooks and journals are perpetual works progress specific to that individual. One thing is true of any practical BOS: it ain't pretty. It's a working document filled with stains, splotched ink, tears etc., much like grandma's recipes book... And good luck to you if your initiator has atrocious penmanship (one acquires their trad's BOS by copying their initiator's copy). 😵💫☺️
EXACTLY THIS!!!! I'm not Wiccan, so feel no need to do anything complicated beyond a notebook of "what I did and what worked", because my memory is not what it was....
Magic witchy make-up follow up tip: if you need your esoteric oculars to see clearly, you can use your methaphysical moon-blessed mirror in your moondust magical eyeshadow palette! I have one really cheap and small rectangular one that fits right ino my esoterical palm, so I can work it from different angles.
Im a house cleaner and last week i was cleaning a mirror and saw my reflection 😬 Eyeliner way to heavy, mascara way to heavy. Completely blind without my glasses! Im 50 next year and it wasn't a good look 😭😭😭 Just my opinion, if there is an ancestor wanting to connect they will make it quite clear that it's them. My grans sister has been with me for many years and has come to me in no uncertain terms to let me know that im not alone and that things are going to be ok for me, if i see a feather on the ground its not a sign.....it just means birds are molting 😅😅😅 not that its been put there for me
I've had the same conversations about planners as with Books of Shadows. Everybody works and organizes differently, but I personally don't need a planner with books of stickers, pouches, coloring projects, illustrations, fancy paper etc (often at a premium price.) I need something durable and not ugly that lays flat to keep track of appointments, extracurriculars, and track certain things. It's a working book that I will barely use after a year. My Tarot book is a 99 cent school composition book my kid ended up not using.
We were sat star gazing , chatting away by the fire. Not a clue it was dated to happen that night . I looked up and said " Baaaaabs??? Why am I seeing Magenta Angle wings in the sky ??? 😱🤔 I quickly studied up .. Yep ! Lots of solar activity this past few months . I took pics , amazing , beautiful and really wing like 👼
I do care how my future “grimoire” will look like (currently I just write in regular ass notebooks), because with the way my handwriting works I just never go back and reread my previous entries, and depend on my (quite poor) memory. Because In the first couple of days after I write something I still can navigate my scribbles, but after that it’s like trying to decipher notes of a doctor I’ve never visited before. So I plan to use my graphic design skills and make templates for pages and print them out, because otherwise I will never have a cohesive, easily readable book.
I love my book. It's got so many spells that I've collected over the years, and when i first started I'd carry it with me when foraging for new herbs but can't draw for crap so all my drawings are what the flowers or whatever have to identify them. I dont see how putting cool aesthetic in ur own book if someone likes it themselves since it's their own book is so horrific. To each their own. But my tarot book is my tarot notebook as well.
The big issue for me is that so much thought goes into crafting the aesthetic, and so little into WHY they are writing a BoS. Everything in witchcraft and magical practice should be prefaced with "Why am I doing this? What is it's purpose?" (in my opinion, at least - other opinions are available). And if the "why" is "because I enjoy making beautiful things", then my next question would be, "and what does that accomplish in your pursuit of witchcraft?". (I'm not addressing these to you, btw! Just an imaginary person.). And if it doesn't further the pursuit of witchcraft, is it just a glorified art project?
I lol when I saw a claim about "vikings" thinking the northern lights were spirits. There's no evidence that the Norse made mention of them at all. It would have been unlikely they would have been able to see them if they were in Iceland due to the volcanic activity at that time. Reykjavík didn't get its name for nothing.
I have seen the claim that the Bifrost bridge may have been based on the northern lights because some descriptions of it "burning" seem to match northern lights more than a rainbow. That's at least based on something like reading the lore, more than "spirits."
This is my first time seeing your content. I might be a tad guilty but I loved this video! You're hysterical. I'll absolutely be checking out more of your content. 🖤

Lmao. Dead auntie Gladys where’s the good vegetable peeler? 🤣 Completely lost it. Anytime I interpret a natural phenomenon or a signal from nature or de ja vu, I think like this then rationality thankfully kicks in and I realize I’m being nutters. The scrapbooking bit got me. I can’t even complete a book of shadows, I write something then I see how crappy it looks and tear it out and think I’ll rewrite that later 😆 I tend to think if I write it down I imagine my loved ones finding it and dramatically reading it and saying yup she was nutters. Sigh. I love your grumps!
Oh My Sweet Aunt! You actually speak science! Okay, that gets a subscribe from me! And a sensible notebook? Gee, I might have found a kindred spirit! I shall watch more videos!
Re: the AB lights and ancestors -- Mind you, I'm in the States, and while you recorded this video some months ago, we've had our own AB light show recently. I didn't go out to see it. I don't have to. 😅 A bunch of farm families in a 50-mike radius sent pictures in to our local news channel and said channel put the images on their app. Now, as an energy sensitive person, am I affected by the solar storms? Oh, hell, yes! Have my ancestors shown up via the AB? No. Not in the least. They don't have to. They know who -- and what -- I am. Talk about hearing things through the cosmic grapevine! 😅😅 And because they know of my abilities, two women in particular showed up -- Great-grandmother Hoover (no relationship with the vacuum people), and Great-Aunt Lydia -- to have me tell my mom about two particular things that they definitely want me, specifically, to have after my mom crosses over. They were adamant about it because at Great-grandmother Hoover's passing, there were way too many "vultures" grabbing this and that, without a thought for leaving certain things for my Aunt Linda or my mom. My mom did manage to get Great-grandma's bread knife, and Aunt Lydia's garnet jewelry. Another ancestor, a Scottish healer named Margaret who lived during the Highland Clearances showed up for me not long ago, out of the blue. Unfortunately, any physical record of her was burned. So for her to specifically give me her name and what she did was unexpected, to say the least. I mean, I'm a writer, and I have a vivid imagination. I am also very interested in making my own tea infusions/blends at some point. But name and occupation are two very on-the-nose particulars, and I've sensed her presence off and on lately. And she insisted I call her Margaret -- not Maggie, or even Meg. 😅
I like calling it a book of shadows for a little razzle dazzle. I use mine as a reference book and to remember and track spelllwork. I tend to forget really basic stuff, so it helps. I don't go nuts with making it pretty though.
My "book of shadows" is my first draft notes for magical study kind of thing. I'll jot thoughts too and have a section for sabbat associations. It's prep space for possible grimoire pages. I like the way some have described it: a BoS is basically a witch's journal. And a grimoire is collated information for reference or passing down.
As another commenter mentioned, my Book of Shadows is my first draft of various things that I am learning on my magical path. It’s messy and private. It’s my journal of all the experiences. I am the n the process of creating a grimoire that is general knowledge that any witch or non witch can see and by doing so may inspire the witch folk or correct any misunderstandings that the non witch people may have
I tried to get something going with an old Filofax once, but it rapidly became an exercise in pointlessness. Still got it somewhere. I painted a silver tree on the cover. For the vast bulk of our history we were illiterate, but that never got in the way of us homo sapiens engaging with the unseen world. If anything it probably made it easier with less inner chatter to distract us.
It's only starting to penetrate my awareness - this Aurora Borealis UK event. So, I missed it. But a science TH-cam channel was talking about a recent 'Carrington Event', and I know that has something to do with solar storms, so I wonder if the two are the same thing. Besides that - the silver lining, to having a not quite state of the art camera, is that you have no excuse to not experience the thing first hand! Isn't that kind of liberating? You can always look at somebody else's photographs. Not everything has to have posterity. Some things are experiences just for you and they come and go so fast that you can't tell anybody about them, and be believed, and can't capture them as they are so fleeting. So the only thing left is to enjoy them and then let them go. When did we stop being able to enjoy things as they are happening?
That was definitely what I was telling myself, to be honest. I was slightly grumpy that I'd thought I would get to see the Lights with my eyes, not my crappy phone though! But being in the middle of nowhere, with a really weird sky and silence everywhere was pretty special. Props to my friends who managed to sleep through it all, though...
It was overcast by me when the electrical storm aurora happened, but we get them every winter, so it wasn't too much of a loss. The ancestors thing sounds like appropriation of Canadian and Alaskan native folklore. Possibly also the related Siberian cultures, but I'm less familiar with those.
That's really interesting! As far as I am aware the claim of ancestors in the Northern Lights was uttered by very white, very English people, so whilst it is not rubbish, it is certainly appropriation unless there is a long lost Ainu diaspora in Wolverhampton.... Thanks for the info!
I think I may need to go shopping.... I've got this gorgeous mirror in my bedroom, like a fairytale kind of thing. And I jab myself in the eye SO OFTEN. I obviously need to pay attention to magnification rates....
Haha. Its like on 31st october 'the veil is thinner'.. if your dead family whom you didnt want to talk to when they were alive, want to get messages throufh, they will do it any day of the year.🎉 re grimoires/diaries..we did an episode on it n i showed mine briefly. Its a 25 year or so mess. Nothing added but scribbles. I did intentionally write neat, but after page 5 it went downhill.😂😂
My BoS is a hot mess as well. I like the concept of "the veil is thinning" and making a special time to have a little ritual. But, like you, my mum and dad tend to show up whenever they want to, not to order!
Unfortunately for me, the magnifying mirror doesn't work, as the focal distance between the mirror and my eye is the problem. But good idea for people with less poo eyesight than me!
You mentioning Books of Shadows...another video attached to this is New Handmade Book of Shadows. Was going to watch it for a laugh, but I cannot be bothered. 😂
Temu, shadows books etcetera. Wanna be witches. It's cool to be. No, think that you are. I'm so happy to find someone that thinks the same as me. I am a papercrafter at times, but that hobby definitely has nothing to do with my spiritual thoughts or beliefs. Journals are the same on most channels. It took me a while to accept my writings/diary/journal is a place to pour out headspace to my physical self but not for consumption by anybody else at all.
Northern lights stuff seems more like aether magic than anything. Something that the more mystically inclined steampunks would be into. Of course from there it's a short hop to electric universe, which isn't so far removed from flat earthism and all that jolly fun. I personally can't stand my bloody ancestors. I certainly don't want them coming at me from the sky!
Welcome, Oh Crabby Old Crone! Honestly, so much of this world makes me rant uncontrollably. I feel this channel is saving my husband from a lot of me shouting, "AND ANOTHER THING!!!!" at him over the dinner table...
The thing i dont understand is that BoS/notebook it doesnt matter, they are the same thing. Some people prefer the more fanciful name, I'm failing to understand how that is pretentious? You could call it Martha ffs, who cares lol

We had the lights again here last week or so. Still didn't see much :-(. Glad you've had some interesting experiences though!
That's actually a very nice distinction. I like it!
As another commenter mentioned, my Book of Shadows is my first draft of various things that I am learning on my magical path. It’s messy and private. It’s my journal of all the experiences.
I am the n the process of creating a grimoire that is general knowledge that any witch or non witch can see and by doing so may inspire the witch folk or correct any misunderstandings that the non witch people may have
I only call it my book of shadows because I have so so many other notebooks lol
"It really hurts. Dont do it!" Best tip ever!😂😂 I just stopped doing make up when I hit 50. Done my face maybe 4 times since, cant be bothered.😅
For me it's a bit like gilding a potato. No amount of foundation is going to make it NOT look like a potato....
Awww😍💗👰🙏Love this story . I was part of a Hand binding wedding. Wow How creative you can be as opposed to traditional weddings 👍👌
You know what, I never thought about the fact that illiteracy was the normal state of affairs for most of our history. That's an excellent point.....
Oooooow👀Eye liner Ouch mirror warning 😆👌👍Makeup 😵😬Nope ! It flares me reeeet up . Streams of tears of eye stings 😆🤔😵👩🏫🍎
A small, hand-held 10x magnification mirror works for me 😂 no unwanted jabs in the eye!
I think I may need to go shopping.... I've got this gorgeous mirror in my bedroom, like a fairytale kind of thing. And I jab myself in the eye SO OFTEN. I obviously need to pay attention to magnification rates....
❤❤❤😂😂😂❤❤❤Just made my day!!! Laughing so hard, because I can so relate.😊😊😊
Thankyou! Glad to have made you chuckle a little bit!
I've got attractive white streaking- does that mean I'm an aurora?
Yes! Yes you are!
Totally. And so am I!
Haha. So if you live at the equator your ancestors don't give a damn apparently 😂
Does white Lightning mean something different in the UK?
In the US it means moonshine
An entire pint of it would kill you 😂
It's a brand of (quite strong) cider
Magnifying mirror.
Unfortunately for me, the magnifying mirror doesn't work, as the focal distance between the mirror and my eye is the problem. But good idea for people with less poo eyesight than me!
I hardly fo make up now I'm 51, it's a mess... i cant see...and the paper skin doesn't help. 😢
But I really want to know where that vegetable peeler is!!
It's down the side of the cutlery insert in the drawer. Honest.
You mentioning Books of Shadows...another video attached to this is New Handmade Book of Shadows. Was going to watch it for a laugh, but I cannot be bothered. 😂
If you can find a short one, it's fascinating watching, I promise you.
You are so funny. I have 2 grimoires but i call them book of shadows because some people don't know what a grimoire is. I dont have an aunt gladys
I had a great-aunt Edith!
Seriously. People know that brother Bear is Just a Disney movie.
Some say that this a galactic federation based on the sun 🌞👩🚀Errrr yeah I'm not sure about that but what do I know lol 💆🤦🙏🙌
Spiritual beliefs arent the same as being a flat earther 🙄
@@JenIsHungry No, but a lot of flat earthers base their belief on old testament scripture.
Right on, sister. I'm so tired of these kids playing "witchypoo". It's a gimmick to get views on social media. Just another crabby old crone here.
Welcome, Oh Crabby Old Crone! Honestly, so much of this world makes me rant uncontrollably. I feel this channel is saving my husband from a lot of me shouting, "AND ANOTHER THING!!!!" at him over the dinner table...
I didn't know older practitioners were so up their own asses.
The thing i dont understand is that BoS/notebook it doesnt matter, they are the same thing. Some people prefer the more fanciful name, I'm failing to understand how that is pretentious? You could call it Martha ffs, who cares lol
