The biggest problem I have with censorship in that way is that in censoring it you might as well have written it in massive letters with an explanation that you wrote it with the intent of it being dirty. If someone says "suma cum laude" they've said "suma cum laude". Done. If they say "suma --- laude", they've said "suma and we censored the word cum because it refers to ejaculate in certain contexts laude". They gotta get over this shit, it's absurd.

I will say that someone at the local store should have realized what happened and followed up with the customer to confirm what she wanted, but it wasn't the local store that blocked the word. The customer had ordered the cake online and the computer algorithm that apparently is programmed to block "bad" words doesn't take context into consideration.
The website even warned the mother this was going to happen and she chose to write lengthy special instructions and assume it would all be ok. Had she taken the precaution of going and talking to a real person, it would have all worked out fine.

A similar thing happened to me in high school. I googled “what does summa cum laude mean” on a school computer. As soon as the page came up I lost control of the mouse and my google page was closed. I asked my teacher what happened and she guessed that my search was deemed inappropriate by the school districts computer monitoring program, so they took control over the computer to close the “inappropriate” website.

Why would the mother be so mad? Her kid graduated college. He probably can figure out why it was sensored. Does the ridiculous censorship really take away that much from his achievements. When I graduated high school my mom bought a chinese spongecake. She asked the baker (English was his second language) to write "Congratulations" on the cake, but he ended up writing "Congratulatios." It was a good cake and I appreciated the baker's effort.

At my current place of employment/torment, we package Publix products and when we first did, I was pronouncing it 'Pu-blix', being unfamiliar with the grocery chain. Apparently, the one who made the decision to censor the cake didn't finish high school...

Computer algorithm did the censorship, human wrote the cake. Human likely thought about correcting it and decided not to get fired that day. I imagine that the cake writer will be emboldened after this, working his/her way up correcting small typos, then grammar, and finally rewriting boring messages completely, creating brilliant masterworks of edible flash fiction. And, of course, will be fired when Publix hires a robot to simply print the words on cakes.
(In a twist, the robot has a dadaist streak and likes to change submissions to Unicode mojibake and SQL error codes.)

See, I knew Publix Corporate was nuts - I worked for them for a short while a few years ago, and had to shave off my goatee (you know - the one I had worn for over 25 years) because it didn't fit with their notion of what a "proper gentleman" should look like. Although, it would have been ok for me to have worn a moustache - because that was the look their founder had sported. Seriously, how nuts is that?
