The Count was often ill and had sleepless nights. Anyone who want to fall asleep fast should be satisfied with this pace. Lang Lang is such a compassionate performer. Though I almost fall to sleep, I appreciate Lang Lang for always has something new.
I’ve listened to this wonderful Aria so many times played by different performers throughout my life and invariably enjoyed their particular rendition, whether fast or slow and even in syncopated form. However played it’s because Bach shaped the notes and made them forever sound beautiful, moving and wonderful. However, Lang Lang here choses to make the notes flow like water droplets trickling off an uneven surface during Autumn’s gentle rain. Lang Lang makes the notes appear, at times to hesitate, pool on the surface and then trickle momentarily faster until drained, only to resume their tempo once again until the next pause followed by sudden release. They are unmistakably Bach’s notes, but Lang Lang’s interpretation of how they should sound, here makes them special. I loved it, thanks Lang Lang. In contrast, go and listen to Gould’s interpretation, he creates quite a different picture.
Bravo.

Stunning and masterful, as always. I find it odd how people act like Lang Lang’s interpretation somehow damages the original score, like he is painting over the Mona Lisa. I understand how some may not care for his take on this iconic work, but if you don’t like it, go listen to someone else. Most of the criticism I read here seems to imply that Lang Lang is doing something wrong. He is among the greatest living pianists, if not the greatest. He doesn’t need the approval of TH-cam trolls.
Leftbanker Quite true mate! But some folk are never satisfied, and love to moan, you know that! I’m no expert....but this sounds wonderful to me! 💕💕🇬🇧 🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸
Leftbanker : Actually, DG does need all the approval it can get. Which is why LL was advertised ad nauseam while the recording was being prepared. DG knows what it has on its hands. Not one single reputable music magazine has reviewed this recording.
As Im practising this wonderful Aria, your interpretation helps me greatly although I cant imitate you of course, it gives me the right slow intimate tempo this piece requires. Thank you Maestro! I always refer to your interpretations or David Fray's ones when it comes to Bach.
When Glenn Gould spoke of Bach, he reminded us that Bach loved variation, and that the notes on the page could be played in boundless ways. I believe that Gould and Bach would find Lang Lang enchantingly lovely.
No they wouldn't. Today's modern classical audience could still like this, but it's definitely very far from the imprint that Gould gave to the score, and which remains a milestone to this day. This is too much on the emotional side, voluntarily disregarding the tempo and thus depriving the Variations of their intrinsic formal perfection.
Michele Palozzo I remember Gould saying that he even liked the way the Swingle Singers sang Bach, so when you make the claim that he wouldn’t like Lang Lang, I think you are mistaken. I am a huge Gould fan, and love both of his Goldberg recordings, which in my mind are unsurpassed to this day.
Bach can be played in many ways since he rarely wrote down any indications such as Pianissimo or Forte..etc..Therefore I don't understant why all of his works are played like copy/paste....
There's no exaggeration when I say that this music is heavenly... no piece of music has ever given this kind of feeling. Thank you for sharing this wonderful performance!

I had always thought of Bach as intellectual, almost mathematical, music. Lang Lang adds to it an emotional content that completes and elevates it to the top of MOAT (music of all times).
Quelle nostalgie ❤

What you heard is just the beginning of what is, for all pianists, a monumental performance challenge.
This is pure gold.
Pure essence of art.
Great talent.

So much more of a mature interpretation than years ago, keep it up?

Bach talks to us through LangLang Thanks 2 of you
Certainly a great show. Whether there is substance, I will wait to hear the complete variations.
Show??
Sublime performance 🎉🙏🏻🎶🎵👍🏻
Stunning and masterful, as always. I find it odd how people act like Lang Lang’s interpretation somehow damages the original score, like he is painting over the Mona Lisa. I understand how some may not care for his take on this iconic work, but if you don’t like it, go listen to someone else. Most of the criticism I read here seems to imply that Lang Lang is doing something wrong. He is among the greatest living pianists, if not the greatest. He doesn’t need the approval of TH-cam trolls.
Leftbanker
Quite true mate!
But some folk are never satisfied,
and love to moan, you know that!
I’m no expert....but this sounds wonderful to me! 💕💕🇬🇧

Leftbanker : Actually, DG does need all the approval it can get. Which is why LL was advertised ad nauseam while the recording was being prepared. DG knows what it has on its hands. Not one single reputable music magazine has reviewed this recording.
@@quaver1239 Not one person at a single reputable music magazine can play piano like Lang Lang.
How do they play two different songs at the same time with both hands lawd it’s MAGIC 😩
You can, too.
Exquisite, and refreshing. The great Glenn Gould, and yet just as slmply wonderful. Thanks Lang Lang
@@michelepalozzo5824 This has definite inspiration from GG's '82 recording.
