    Vince. The leather armor strips are called pteruges from ancient greek - πτέρυγες (ptéruges) 'feathers'. First used by the Greeks on their bronze and linen cuirasses and then adopted by the Romans as part of their different styles of armor.

      From what I understand they're meant to be some kind of space super cloth or something instead of leather in 30K. I forget the details, though... 🤔

    I don't know if this makes sense to anyone else, but normally when I watch a painting tutorial, the end result seems underwhelming somehow. Vince is one of the few painters where I watch the entire paint process and I am still amazed by the end result.

    I can't tell you how much I appreciate this video. I am building up a 30K Alpha Legion and roughly followed your Tamiya ratio and definitely appreciate the advanced color matching advice on the red leathers. I started with painting the Dead Marine on the base of Abaddon (40K) in this color scheme. Helps me not have to use a model I need for my Alpha Legion army.

    • @JasperXoR
      @JasperXoR 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I finally tested out this scheme on my airbrush. I have a DreadClaw Dropship. One thing I failed to do was mix the Tamiya jar of Green and blue before pouring out. the green tends to have yellow rise to the top of the jar and if it's not mixed up well. Once I correctly mixed it worked great.

    • @brightonboiii
      @brightonboiii ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JasperXoRI’ve been trying to achieve the blue shown in this video but 3:1 blue to green comes out very green for me, 4:1 less so but still green, 5:1 finally looks blue but then loses that green tint, feel like I’m missing something is there a trick in how you mixed the inks?

    For anyone curious about the choice on Tamiya clears in addition to what Vince covered in this video:
    GW's display photos for the Alpha Legion on Forge World also used these Tamiya paints. I believe they said it outright in one of the older paint guide/books. Keep in mind this was well before Contrast was in the works. Probably anywhere between 4th-6th edition of 40K...when it was still common to see homebrew and DIY in the crafting part of the master codex.
    If you choose to work with contrast, you could go with either Akhelian Green, Terradon Turquoise, or some mix of the two.

    No interest in AL personally, but just wanted to thank you for, well, being your regular self; it's refreshing to see a simple tutorial and someone capable of amazing minis saying it's impractical to do display quality all the time. Some other youtube channels would have you believe everything should be display all the time - fair play to whoever wants that, but I really appreciate how down to earth you are.
    Sometimes I feel bad for wanting to just do good enough and move on - Death guard has become a grind. Every model has so much going on; rust, pitted metal, trim, pitted trim, wood, leather, cloth, tentacles, teeth, horns, innards.. usually not all of those, but most of them.

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Never feel bad about doing a miniature to the level you want to do that miniature to. I struggle with it all the time, especially as much of my work ends up on video/internet. You feel everything has to be your best or people will look down on you. That's been something I try to fight through because this is supposed to be fun. That's how I talk to myself, just remember this is fun and it's a good job if you're happy with the miniature. :)

    1. How dark is the VMC magnesium, is it darker than Steel, Lighter than Dark Aluminum or somewhere in between?
    2. How much difference do you think the liquid chrome makes? I want to take my time with this army and make it really nice, can I go without it, or is it worth spending the money on. Would the paint from a $10 marker be enough, or would I need the $30 refill bottle for a 2k army?

    Best metals I have ever seen. I will never have an airbrush because my parents think that it has toxic fumes. So until I’m old enough to move out I can’t get one. Is there anyway to achieve results without one. I just feel so limited with all my painting

      You could get pretty close with dry brushing the progression with a soft makeup brush. It wouldn't be that smooth, but you could get close and the roughness could have a little texture that brings life as well.

    You’ve got me all fired up to start a similar project Vince.
    One question though.
    I realize Tamiya clear X23 and X25 comes in either enamel or acrylic paint.
    If I’m using acrylic base coat does it matter if my clear paint is enamel type?
    It seems the Tamiya acrylic clears are harder to come by where I am.

    • @VinceVenturella

      I would always use the Tamiya thinners with them, they are alcohol based and work correctly with the Tamiya paints.

    Hi Vince. Long time watcher, first time poster. Why did you mix your tamiya clear mixture with medium instead of diluting with airbrush thinner? And in the absense of tamiya specific thinner any gloss medium would work right? Hoping to do something similar with bloody angels… Thank you for you time, and the amazing content you put up :)

If they were still bothering to restock them just a couple days before being unlisted I'd like think they're not gone permanently.

    Vince I to am painting Alpha Legion when the box comes out though I substitute airlines green and terradon turquoise because my paint space is not greatly ventilated and the tanks can have a odor. Anyway my question is how did you achieve the light to dark fades on the Spartan? Did you just go back and carefully hit parts with the silver and the be careful applying the clears thinly? Also would Vallejo Metal Color Gunmetal be a good substitute for magnesium or is it not dark enough? Thank you looking forward to DoK review this week.

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So in order
      1) On the Spartan, it was careful work with the initial metals and then payne's grey for shadows both before and as a very thin filter after the Tamiya clears. The key is to work those gradients where you wanted.
      2) Yes, Gun Metal would be fine.

    Once you slide the decal on, how long do you let it sit before you go back with the micro sol? I have the vallejo decal softener, but I assume it's the same as micro sol. Do you wait until it is completely dry and doesnt move before you remove the creases? Awesome video btw

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wait a few minutes basically, until it looks mostly dry. With the first smoothing, I am trying to get most bubbles/bumps gone, then the sol really flattens and integrates it.

      @VinceVenturella  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure, so you could do the same thing with the following steps.
      1) Spray them all black primer.
      2) Spray them with leadbelcher rattlecan, not just from above, but not completely, like from mostly above and the sides.
      3) Drybrush with a bright silver, only drybrush in a downward direction and from the top down.
      4) Apply Akehlian green with brush, you may want to thin a little less than 1-1 with contrast medium.
      That should give you a reasonable approximation of what you see here.
