Thank you for this. I had a guy ask me to make him a guitar with like a framed body? Out of Purple Heart wood. Soooooo that’s going to be fun. A lot like that bass you made actually. That wood is absolutely gorgeous and I’ll be a bit more prepared to work with it now. Thanks again! 😁
One thing I have learned about applying epoxy in small places or more accurately is to use soft squeeze bottles. I am using the 1 ounce bottles that come in a pool chemistry kit. The nice thing is the top pops off so super easy to fill it, cap and use. Plus the soft plastic can be flexed after the epoxy has cured and picked out of the bottle so you can use it again!
This is awesome, I hope we get more of these toolmaking/meta building videos from you! Question: does anyone know when/why steaming wood is better than just soaking wood?
@@jimurrata6785 It doesn’t loosen it. It softens and becomes flexible and the moisture makes the fibers more plastic. Soaking wood just swells up the fibers.
Great video. You mentioned you used 4" ABS. That looks larger than 4" more like 6" id. I am finding solid wall ABS larger than 4" is hard to find locally in lengths larger than 2' but since it does have a higher heat rating than PVC I will keep looking. Can you mention if the ABS has held up well to multiple uses? I know folks that have built out of PVC mention theirs sags.
I really like your videos, and I enjoy your handy craft projects! I was wondering why this one ended so abruptly, I wish you concluded with some projects you are going to use with the bent wood.
I'm glad you're feeling better. Everyone gets COVID. I had it twice and was asymptomatic. Stay healthy and remember to eat properly! Doubly so if you lose your taste..
You may have found Dave already, but around 3/4 of the way down his home page (th-cam.com/users/EngelsCoachShop1), he has a series of clips on steam bending. from memory he has the steam at around 5psi in his box. Probably not going to work with plastic pipe but might get a better result...
Instead of the premade steam boiler, wouldn't an easy to build option be to have a 90 degree angle piece going down into a length of galvanized pipe with a water heater element?
Mmmmm ... a small amount of any ammonia product added to the steaming water will make the wood fibres relax more easily making your bending tasks easier ... 😉
@@ConcreteLand ... I think the amount to use varies with type if wood your bending ... but from what I understand the Ammonia allows the cellulose in the wood fibres to relax a fair bit easier ...
You might want to go to a plumbing house and ask them if that is safe to heat with steam. Not for the pressure, but for the toxic fumes when pvc type pipes are heated. It's not good stuff. Please be safe. Other than that cool video!
a bit surprised at the lack of "wrinkly wood" jokes in the comments.. quite a group of respectable followers.... except for me of course,, cant take me anywhere
I love short, focused videos on specific techniques like this.👍
me too!!!
Steambox Willie is a much better name. Thanks for the guide on how to make one.
Already looking forward to all the "Offcuts," Keep up the inspiring work Xyla!
Thank you for creating a channel I didn't know I needed in my life.
...' Steambox Willie's done...' I am sure he was! Great video and fun!
Thanks for this! I want to make a box for steaming rolls of dyed fabric and this would work great!

This video definitely a keeper as I start looking at bent wood art for the coming year. Thanks for putting this together!
Thank you so much for this video.
I hope we get some more how-to-esq videos from you.
Gotta say, naming the second channel 'Offcuts' is a 10/10 name
Gotta love the paint booth, too
*tent
😉
That Rockler steamer looks identical to a wallpaper steamer (which are cheaper).
I *love* steam bending. Ever since taking Native Arts Studio courses...Thank you for this video and this second channel!
Another banger - glad you mentioned this channel!! Later on Wayne.
The Rockler steamer is the same as a wallpaper steamer, for removing wallpaper.
Thank you! I need to do one of these if I rib the roof of my boat for more strength/easy panelling.
The one you made is long enought to steam ash and make snowshoes...well done!

Nice work young lady!!! I like it

Steam is hotter!
The heat loosens the lignin holding the wood fibers together.
For REALLY flexible wood you can try anhydrous ammonia under pressure.
@@jimurrata6785 You could do that, but I would very deeply consider if you are operating with appropriate PPE before thinking about it.

It doesn’t loosen it.
It softens and becomes flexible and the moisture makes the fibers more plastic.
Soaking wood just swells up the fibers.
I love this kind of video! Thank you Xyla
Wonderful video! Can you link your main channel to this one under the "channels" tab?
Great Video, where can i get the steamer?
Where did you buy the steam box kit?

liked the video, very informative....mostly i like seeing woman in trades....it is balance
Nice video, is the wood quarter cut? I have a similar form and thought that my form was the issue. Maybe steam time was the issue, my wood snapped lol
I really like your videos, and I enjoy your handy craft projects! I was wondering why this one ended so abruptly, I wish you concluded with some projects you are going to use with the bent wood.
Can you get it hotter than 212° ?
Great to see the new channel.
Raaaaaaad! Love this!
Could you return the condensed water back to the steam source? Assuming there is enough leakage that pressure isn't a huge issue.
how about "STEAMBOX SALLY".....cool vid ...thanks for sharing
Liked and subscribed as cool project using simple to buy parts.
I'm glad you're feeling better. Everyone gets COVID. I had it twice and was asymptomatic.

Super useful, thank you!
I’m looking to bend some 6x1 hardwood decking plank to about 10’ radius. Is this possible do you think?
I completely forgot about the twitter poll to name the steambox!
It was a good time 😂
I want make a perverse remark but she is REALLY good at bending wood😅 3:56
I'm interested in what you're making with that form. (sorry, I don't follow on insty or whatever SM)
Btw what is that right angle thingamajig at 0:27?
I want one now.
Great video, once again I'm itching to make a steambox. Does it get significantly more humid in the shop while the steambox is working its magic?
Not noticeably, but I live in Los Angeles where any amount of humidity is welcome 😅
Hey thanks, this video is super cool. *bookmarked*
This is awesome!!
You just saved me some money, insta sub
Congratulations on the new channel, you get twice the fun now 🙄😊
you need a handle at the endcap in form of a steam engine smoke stack! :-D
Engagement for the engagement god!
Easy peasy steambox.😉
"Bad jump cuts" Amen

Steambox Willie - both a great steamer name and an unfortunate medical condition
anarchy is fun...when making steam boxes, of course
Nice! And Steambox Willie is a very appropriate name, considering how phallic it is... 😅
hey! more videos...😀
But will it play cyberpunk?
Instead of the premade steam boiler, wouldn't an easy to build option be to have a 90 degree angle piece going down into a length of galvanized pipe with a water heater element?
You better play some Boxcar Willie to go with Steambox Willie.
I wouldn't risk the wrath of Disney's bloodthirsty lawyers by putting it in a video, though.
Steam the wood in a plastic bag. Without removing the plastic bag bend the wood. It goes much faster with more predictable results.
I will make one and name it "Mamma's got a"
I have this same steamer and it suddenly keeps tripping the outlets? Anyone have this issue with it?
Ditch the extension cord or get a heavier one.
2:47 DISNEY LEGAL TEAM WOULD LIKE TO KNOW YOUR LOCATION!!
A wallpaper steamer being called a kit?
It's a "kit" if you buy it in blue from Rockler for $90.
Otherwise it's a wallpaper steamer you can get anywhere for $60.
Cool !=8)
yay found you :)
Cool!
Mmmmm ... a small amount of any ammonia product added to the steaming water will make the wood fibres relax more easily making your bending tasks easier ... 😉
That’s cool. Is there a water to ammonia ratio or just a spoonful? Do you know why it works?

@@stejac51 thank you
The night was sultry
Up voted this video just for Steambox Willie.
It isn't a steam box, but a steam tube.
Lawsuit from Disney incoming...

good point
Am I the only one who thought this was going to be about building a STEAM Machine for gaming from scratch instead of a DIY wood bending setup?

Your cheap little steamer is way too small for that size of pipe.

makes me sick seeing you use all those nice tools you havent had to work for
Xylafoxlin Awesome work done with the bass guitar 🙌⛑️🔥 keep it up
