USB C has issues with maintaining efficiency over 140w charging. Asus could do USB C charging but they would have to crank the voltage pretty high and that will complicate the power delivery system and cost more so they use the current port instead
I've got a Surface Book 2 (15" w/ GTX1060 and only 16GB of RAM) and a 14" MBP M1 Pro (also with 16GB of memory); I've been wanting a better Windows machine for game dev and essentially to replace my SB2. This laptop looks like it can do that.
Seeing these new models of the G14 and just 14 inch laptops in general are making me realize just how much of a unicorn last years Ryzen 9 + RTX 4090 Asus G14 was with the miniLED panel. Although that laptop out of the box only offers 125W to the GPU, you can flash other Asus laptop VBios onto it like 150W/175W and not thermal throttle by tuning other aspects and cooling in G-Helper software. It's just crazy the engineering marvel that one is, and how much performance is left on the table by laptop manufacturers this year in the 14 inch space - hell - even a lot of the new 16 inchers.
I'm curious to know how the XPS 14/16 with discrete GPUS stack up against the G14/16 with comparable GPUs. I'm mainly curious because the new G16 weighs 4lbs versus the new XPS 16 at 4.6lbs. I just dont understand how a gaming laptops weighs less and is thinner than an XPS....

This is the G14 i've been waiting for. No longer looks super gamer and actually seems like a true Macbook Pro alternative. Good speakers, display, build quality, aesthetics. I think they nailed it as a refinement generation.
my 2022 G14 which i owned for a year now is having issues with the charging port. It's so annoying. The laptop looks premium but the build quality isn't as good as you'd think (paint peels off on edges etc..)

Pretty good trade offs for what's being brought to the table this year honestly. I'm not even upset at not being able to swap the ram. 32gb is likely more than enough for everything. I don't exactly even aim to max the performance for games on PC anyway. The performance upgrades/downgrades might look pretty minimal to me. I'm still contemplating getting this coming from the G14 from 2021. If it's a probable skip if someone has the 2022 or 2023 models, what would that mean if you're coming from even older ones like myself?
So for the FPS test, we're those results with turbo mode on and max in-game graphics settings? I had the 2021 g14 and it held up a long time until I finally broke it. Really interested in this 2024 model since it's not much more expensive than my 2021 g14. Would you say gaming performance is at least slightly better than the 2021 model or at least on par, but at max resolution? As long as that's the case, I'll be a happy camper. I think as long as games can average 60fps consistently when capped then it's fine. Seemed almost as smooth to me as having it uncapped.
Devs do not make games for Mac due to macOS and Metal. Intel days we could boot into Windows but so far MS has stopped Bootcamp on the M1 and M2, no doubt as they ere worried.
Depends on what your willing to give up. I want a thin and light gaming laptop cuz im a university student. Along with the step up in build quality i would prefer to spend the extra money for the portability factor.
I hope that ASUS addressed the horrible QC with the older model and Liquid Metal contamination that eventually shorts the MB only to have ASUS claim water damage and refusing to repair the device.

I got mine two days ago and overall I like it. However, when I tap on my touchpad (not press to click, just tap) it sounds like the touchpad is loose/rattling slightly. Apparently that was an issue with older models as well and quite common with Asus (can't comment as that's my first Asus machine). Not sure if I should keep it and try to fix the issue myself or return it. Not keen on sending it in multiple times if this is widespread...
If you’re okay with having a toaster… you can boost the TGP of the 4070 to above 100W using GHelper. Would I recommend it? Well - idk about the long lasting repercussions… and I don’t vouch for the safety of your device. But that’s true for over clocking anything. Basically if you can boost your TGP to 95-100W - you are essentially maxing out the 4070 because all 4060s and 4070s perform the same above 100W
It seems like a more balanced experience than the previous G14. I think is a good change, it brings more options to the market especially when there are no new GPUs and CPU improvement is not impressive. Plus you can still find the 2023 model if you want more power, so kudos to ASUS on this one
Asus needs to tone down the tdp of the gpu even more and make the laptop as silent as possible and remove that stupid slash. if you want to get a gaming power machine you're not gonna get this anyway so it's time to leave the 50+ db fan noise behind. Matthey left it out of the review but currently this has awfully loud fan noise on turbo with coil whine.

I feel that more and more laptops are going to use lower TDP GPUs, in order to push more users into cloud platform (cloud gaming, cloud design, cloud processing, etc..). Maybe the Anima Matrix was somewhat dubious, but the new line is even worse - these are all toys, which make the cost of the laptop higher and add extra weight, but the previous toy was clearly more creative. And considering that the laptop no longer folds out 180 degrees and there are no memory slots, this laptop as a whole is like a toy.
It's weird when u said the battery life up to 10hrs. All the reviews I have watched report a battery life up to at max 6h30 using pcmark 10 modern office benchmark. How did you manage to get 10hrs?

I hate hate HATE that they used the lower wattage 4070, it really just doesnt give you the power you could be having. The thermals are honestly good enough to handle it, and anyone seeking to get good thermals out of a gaming laptop will probably be using a cooler anyways... (P.S. does anyone know if it would be possible to simply up the wattage? Seems unlikely but you never know)
Have a real problem that the only decent ram option is more than a MacBook pro. If i could use mac i would. Taking a hard look at last year's model with this discount or the Lenovo slim 5.
I think PC hardware related companies throughout 2023 made comments that they were looking at 2024 to be a year of increased sales due to impending Win12 launch. Make the computers smaller and sleeker with more eyes looking even if some sacrifices made. I think 2025 PC hardware from all manufacturers will have a bit more maturity if one can hold off for another year.
some reviews have shown the 4070 in this having basically the same performance as a 4060 from last years model. with that said you can save a few hundred Dollars spec'ing these out with a 4060 and 32 gigs of ram, do you think that might be a better idea?

Just got the 2023 model at $1049 and put in an additional 32GB of RAM making it have 48GB RAM since the 16GB is soldered to the board. Then swapped the 512GB drive with a 2TB. Figured there wasn’t much change unless you wanted that new screen and thinner design. I prefer to be able to have the extra swappable RAM slot.
I own a 2022 version that I use 99% of the time for work and I'm honestly considering switching to a macbook pro 😢 The G14 is not amazing as advertised by so many channels. 1 - I would say that high temperatures are really a big thing. And I'm not talking about gaming. Just working all day long using Google Chrome is enough to make your fingers really hot. 2 - Battery life is shitty. "Oh! There's a lot of of tweaks that you can do on your machine..." Yeah! My sports car can also burn less fuel if I drive like a 80yo. 3 - Gaming performance is not impressive and my model (Ryzen 9 6900HS/RX 6800S) suffers with stuttering and thermal throttling. I've tried two games tbh: Valorant was impossible to play and Sekiro (a 2019 game) can not be played decently after the laptop gets hot. 4 - It runs windows! As a windows user since the 95 version (yes I'm old) I would say that I'm sick of 'unexpected behaviors' intrinsic to this OS. Never touched a MacOS before, probably won't be a walk in the park, but those are the reasons why I think the G14 is not worth keeping (or even buying) in 2024 for my use.

they need to put a magnetic charging port on it, i usually forget to unplug my charger and then i yank the laptop out and there goes the whole wire

I just noticed so much screen wobble during the webcam test.
You will see this new design direction from ROG team with their new ROG 8 phones too. Its like they make it less gamery and wanted it appeal to more people? I like their new design though.

Please compare the display reflections with mac book (the best I could find so far).
If the OLED screen will be as reflectig as e.g. galaxy tablets, it would be a deal breaker for me.
There is a sale on best buy, where you can buy G14 with Ryzen 7 7735HS For 900$! Do you think it's worth it? Is there gonna be a lot of differences from the model that you had?
Maybe the Anima Matrix was somewhat dubious, but the new line is even worse - these are all toys, which make the cost of the laptop higher and add extra weight, but the previous toy was clearly more creative.
And considering that the laptop no longer folds out 180 degrees and there are no memory slots, this laptop as a whole is like a toy.
My 2020 model overheats, any over heating with these newer G14's?

It's weird when u said the battery life up to 10hrs. All the reviews I have watched report a battery life up to at max 6h30 using pcmark 10 modern office benchmark. How did you manage to get 10hrs?

youll notice how much effort developers put on creating textures, environment etc, so as new tech such as raytracing
I hate hate HATE that they used the lower wattage 4070, it really just doesnt give you the power you could be having. The thermals are honestly good enough to handle it, and anyone seeking to get good thermals out of a gaming laptop will probably be using a cooler anyways... (P.S. does anyone know if it would be possible to simply up the wattage? Seems unlikely but you never know)
Have a real problem that the only decent ram option is more than a MacBook pro. If i could use mac i would. Taking a hard look at last year's model with this discount or the Lenovo slim 5.

I think PC hardware related companies throughout 2023 made comments that they were looking at 2024 to be a year of increased sales due to impending Win12 launch. Make the computers smaller and sleeker with more eyes looking even if some sacrifices made. I think 2025 PC hardware from all manufacturers will have a bit more maturity if one can hold off for another year.

some reviews have shown the 4070 in this having basically the same performance as a 4060 from last years model. with that said you can save a few hundred Dollars spec'ing these out with a 4060 and 32 gigs of ram, do you think that might be a better idea?
coming from a 2020 G14 (R7/2060) im really tempted to upgrade...but then again .... maybe i could/should wait for the 2025 refresh (if that happens)...

nice review sir i was waiting for ur review(i think the price of the 4070 model was 1999 usd) . Would you prefer g14 2023 with rtx 4060 (ips not mini led) which is on sale currently for 1049 dollars (usd)or the g14 2024 rtx 4060 which has 16gb ram soldered and the price is 1599 (usd)dollars. Just got the 2023 model at $1049 and put in an additional 32GB of RAM making it have 48GB RAM since the 16GB is soldered to the board.
Then swapped the 512GB drive with a 2TB. Figured there wasn’t much change unless you wanted that new screen and thinner design. I prefer to be able to have the extra swappable RAM slot.

I own a 2022 version that I use 99% of the time for work and I'm honestly considering switching to a macbook pro 😢
The G14 is not amazing as advertised by so many channels.
1 - I would say that high temperatures are really a big thing. And I'm not talking about gaming. Just working all day long using Google Chrome is enough to make your fingers really hot.
2 - Battery life is shitty. "Oh! There's a lot of of tweaks that you can do on your machine..." Yeah! My sports car can also burn less fuel if I drive like a 80yo.
3 - Gaming performance is not impressive and my model (Ryzen 9 6900HS/RX 6800S) suffers with stuttering and thermal throttling. I've tried two games tbh: Valorant was impossible to play and Sekiro (a 2019 game) can not be played decently after the laptop gets hot.
4 - It runs windows! As a windows user since the 95 version (yes I'm old) I would say that I'm sick of 'unexpected behaviors' intrinsic to this OS.
Never touched a MacOS before, probably won't be a walk in the park, but those are the reasons why I think the G14 is not worth keeping (or even buying) in 2024 for my use.
Wonder if this is more energy efficient on light load?
