I only got into basketball after leaving university and have never played organised basketball at any level. I love all these types of videos because without these i am so oblivious to all these things that are going on on the court when watching. Thanks for explaining all this stuff in a way that amateurs like myself can understand 😂

Hey to be fair, plenty of people (if not most) who have been playing all their life are oblivious to a lot of these things!
Trust me, even people that played basketball through high school don’t realize how intricate the UConn offense is. If you notice, aside from Castle, they aren’t crazy athletic. They have amazing IQ and fundamentals.

There is a concept of strategic convergence. Where styles or strategies arrive at the same plays via different routes. Like pack line man defense vs matchup zone, was that a help side play or was he covering his area. Was that a variation of a set play or just a common improvisation pattern? Hard to tell.
Reminds of high school basketball in the 90's complicated set plays with many variations, then along came MJ and the Bulls, then everyone wanted to do motion offense based on certain principles like spacing and movement. The funny thing about motion was, well we ran out of new ideas as a team pretty quickly and were back to basically running the same improvised plays over and over again. I like all the screening. As a role player, that was some of the most fun, getting to set a screen on a hot shot. It's a big floor what happens away from the ball is really important!
Never seen an offense this organized and well run! So good to see in this age of one on one, I need to get mine.
The offense is similar to european style of basketball where there is constant movement, spacing and passing.
I always thought that UCONN has a beautiful offense that is very hard to guard because of the constant movement. They don't really run a lot of Isolation stuff you see teams doing to get guys one on one.
They ran this same set play during the championship game
Dan Hurley deserves so much more respect than he gets. I feel like he doesn’t get as much respect as other big time coaches but he wins championships and has built a dominant program
Trust me, we in UConn country respect the hell out of him, never thought we would get back to winning championships after Calhoun.

Some set plays but lots of reading the defense and reacting and flowing into different actions depending on player read. There's players rejecting and cutting and one of those cuts a dude even shows frustration from not getting the ball, it's definately set plays but also reading defense, reacting and having progressions and nuances to their sets and actions.
Love how the offense is always moving. Teams of the past seemed to look more static.
Have to have high IQ players to perform all these actions.
I disagree slightly. They just continually run wrinkles out of the same sets. Another principal you will see is that every time a player makes a pass, he will cut or set a screen. US basketball has put too much attention on iso ball. It's great to have players who are good in isolation, but giving them the advantage by setting up this type of action gives them more opportunity to create. But most of this offense gives each player 1 of 3 choices during any point in the action. Why is the majority of CBB lagging behind? I don't know.
@@hiimpaul9614 After the nation saw just how awesome Uconn was this past season, i expect to see a lot of coaches playing the copy cat game and implementing more complex offensive sets. No joke, Uconn's offense this year was on par with Euro pro teams.
Thanks for pointing out the real essence of basketball. I've always appreciated cuts and screens. This brings to mind the 1977-78 Portland Trailblazers.

This video does a really good job with the numbers and little screen signs to show you where the juice is happening in the play... the problem is that it's so fast and complex I still can't understand a thing. 😂

Very insightful for basketball coaches on how to build their system. You don't have to take these actions, but rather get an idea of how to connect sequences from different sets and be more unpredictable. Well done Spencer, 10/10.

What make it "intricate " is its action on all side of the floor
...where most offense is just top side like dribble handoffs . They have screens all over while also dribble hand off. A Pirate and Jersey legend! Great job Dan!

The biggest thing that makes their offense successful is the IQ of the players reading these screens and defender's reactions to them. Hurley seems to have done a phenomenal job of teaching how to play motion offense to these players. Most of the things that happen in these plays aren't "set" in the way of you have to do it this way, but in the way the player reads the defender and his teammates read him.
This offense is surgical. Hurley is the best in-game coach i have ever seen.

Unmentioned in this video analysis is that generally UConn has advantages in bulk and length in all these examples, plus the confusion created is frequently related to missed assignments due to defensive scheme.
Let's see how UConn'iffense does against a team and defense that isn't so easy to beat like SDSU, which us big, man to man and won't likely be pushed around so easily.
And, SDSU had a taste of UConn's offense as recently as last year's title game.
SDSU has a very solid defense but they don’t have the offense to keep up imo

I remember watching this scissor play and seeing a potential for a screen in the middle freeing up either side, depending on which one the defense chased. It's almost unstoppable.

Looks like they have a motion rule to cut every time they are overplayed. A lot of those are reads/counters to their continuity but the color commentator wasn’t wrong there’s a lot of motion. In fact, maybe these counters started happening so often that they added it to their continuity. Great video and thank you for taking the time to explain this!
This is why Coach Hurley is amazing. Cuts and screens are not particularly matchup dependent. You can always use them to get say Spencer guarded by a slower big, or Karaban guarded by a smaller guard. But doing so many with the players having a choice in the mechanics makes for a really potent offense.

You should do a video on Illinois 5-out offense because it is 3rd in efficiency and the fact that it is 5-out makes it so unique and interesting to analyze
yeah, and they have players who convert all that movement into points. in bball, one of the most deflating things is complex movement, and then still hitting shots, not necessarily layups either, at a high rate. the time playing defense wears the opponent down and they can never catch up. maybe like a good run game in football that translates to slow build up of points.

For what UConn does you need multiple guys that can score at the perimeter, on any given night there are at least four guys that can ruin the other team's night.
5 possibly 6. We have 5 players that have score 20+ points in a game at least twice. Thats crazy.

I just looked at Houston's roster, they give up a lot of size to UConn at just about every position.
@@jeromedanielson4422 Yeah thatd be a problem for Houston but i think they could give Uconn a good game. Problem is Uconn is also tough defensively but can score in bunches something Houston doesnt do at that level and theyre not as deep. Itd be a fun game to see though.

Great motion offense and all that cutting wears you out mentally. I saw instances when cutters were open and they still ran 2 more screens and cuts to get an easy basket. If they run into a hot team that shoots lights out ie around 60% UConn won’t be able to score enough points. It’s the only drawback. Secondly the big dance teams will be more physical and UConn will need significant bench production. They remind me of the old Princeton teams but more athletic.

I'd guard it somewhat soft for 12 seconds, as they run around in circles, and clamp down as they get within 6 seconds of shooting. They are wearing teams down bc they are clamping down every second of each possession.

Nice video. Connecticut is a really dominant team on both ends of the court, but especially offense. I wonder, though, since all of these videos feature defenses which are playing man-to-man (which, I imagine, is how you have to handle the Huskies), how does the Connecticut offense respond to zone-based defenses?

You need VERY HIGH IQ players to play this style and they need to be very skilled as well as coachable. Imagine teaching these reads and reactions to players with no IQ or low IQ. You get my drift.

I need the Warriors to get Alex Karaban, he can come off the bench and play Power forward next to Trayce Jackson Davis, next year’s starting lineup should be the same that Steve Kerr is currently using the Curry, Podziemski, Wiggins, Kuminga and Draymond starting 5 unit but the bench unit and if we decide to bring Cp3 back would be Cp3, Moody, Klay, Karaban and Trayce Jackson Davis! And we’ll still have Gp2 and Looney as well
This is an absolute nightmare to defend. And on one days notice seems impossible to prepare for.

It's a result of last year's bench depth. Diarra, Newton and Clingan all had to wait for this year for their big breaks despite already being excellent players last season.

They rode this offensive mastery to another national title. Crazy good execution from the Huskies to bring home back-to-back national titles. Lots of other coaches will try to replicate this now

Actually seems like an offense that doesn’t have set please but set principles and rules. So in my opinion, both the game commentator and the video narrator are right. it’s not a set play in that players go to an exact spot and do exactly what they’re supposed to do but rather play within the flow of using certain principles with multiple options. However, because the players are aware of these options, they react to their teammates choices.
