    Hi
    In order to get a long lasting quality result, you should have an epoxi primer on bare metal, I have seen great paintwork getting destroyed by blisters due to no primer under polyester sprayfiller. Body guy since 1981.
    Keep the good work going
    Take care

      Yes, I think a coat of epoxy primer before the Evercoat would have been advisable.

      The Directions for the product he is using clearly states "NOTE: All bare metal areas larger than one inch in diameter must be
      treated with a high quality self-etch or epoxy primer." That comes straight off of their web site.

  • @rexlindsey

    Chad, I have much respect for you as a fabricator and a designer. I too build cars and have for 40 years. I know what it takes to achieve the end product that you create. I only have this last comment about the primer as a bit of information that you can take or toss it out as you see fit. I have spent the last 26 years as a manufactures rep for one of the largest automotive coatings companies in the world. I have a lot of experience behind what I am talking about. A large part of my job has been helping painters figure out what went wrong with their paint job. 99% of the time it has been because the painter did not follow the manufactures directions. The directions are for optimal results. The paint chemist that developed this product knows what it will and will not do. The manufacturer of the product has spent many hours testing with salt spray, adhesion and chip resistance. If it fails, they are usually held responsible. Unless it was not used correctly. The procedure that you use will work for a while. Long term, who knows because it was never intended to be used that way. The problems will come later after the hot sun and moisture attacks the finish. Yes 80 grit will provide adhesion. Epoxy is used for corrosion protection as well as adhesion. You cant get corrosion protection from sandpaper. The other potential problem is you over catalized the product. The fact that you had primer left over after using all 4 tubes of hardener tells this clearly. Over catalizing can result in a much slower cure time and can cause other potential long term problems. Please if you are going to teach, be responsible and teach it correctly. I’m sure Evercoat would prefer you teach your viewers the best way to use this primer. Not trying to bust your chops or come across as a know it all, but this is and has been my job for many years. I am a big fan and you have inspired me on my projects.
    Thank you!

      I am curius. Some People talk about epoxi unerneath bodyfill. Whats your take on that?? How do I work with that for the best result?? Lets say i sanded and treated a heavy surface rust spot so the rust is gone but i want to fill it up to a nice finnish :)

    • @rexlindsey
      @rexlindsey 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kulan9379 Epoxy provides a layer of both adhesion and more importantly, corrosion protection. Many paint failures are not really paint related. I have seen multiple times when rust forms under the filler. It is caused by the peroxide in the hardener of the filler. I always epoxy before bodywork!

    • @kulan9379
      @kulan9379 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rexlindsey yes but how do i use it. Is it 36 grit the panel and then 1coat epoxy, lets say 1H before the epoxy is able to be coated with something else. Is it spray it on there wait 1H and then aplly Body fill it how is it done irl??

    • @rexlindsey
      @rexlindsey 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@kulan9379 You can use 36, 40 or 80 grit then apply two coats of epoxy. You need enough film build or the epoxy will not work as it is intended. PPG epoxy will allow up to 7 days before sanding is required. You need to let the epoxy dry before applying body fill. Epoxy ‘s are slow to dry. I usually let it sit overnight before I put anything on top.
      I think my comments have been removed from his site. Hope this helps!

      I am factory trained on this matter and painted thousands of high end cars. . If the car is properly prepared as in the case that Chad is doing it this will work perfectly. The instructions are for all bodymen from the do it yourself guy to the professional so laymen can have direction in case they don't know better. A professional knows by trial and error and by experience. It is funny that a person who isn't a professional can read something and give advise as if they know everything.

    great video.. when you started talking about trying not to spill primer it reminded me of doing that so much...when pouring primer like that and its full.. use some tape and go halfway around the upper part of your can and layer it.. then fold it a bit and run two more tape strips on the outter edges for support.. when you go to pour your primer it will act as one of those old timey oil spickets people used in those old oil cans.. when done and primer is done running back into the can just pull tape off.. just a trick I learned..

I can only think the longevity of the paint will be affected, this being a high solids, sandable primer.

    Chad, does paint now adhere better at masking lines than it used to? When I was a kid, we always pulled the windows and all of the trim. How long do you expect this paint job to last before it starts peeling away at the mask lines? Is the paint water-based? BTW, I like your TV Show but I really like your TH-cam. Are you doing another season on TV as well?

    Hi Chad & Jolene, great videos. Your shop is more like the typical working man's garage than anything I've seen on UTUBE. Very educational. Will you give us some pointers on prepping the mid 80's typical deep surface rust bodys with equipment like yours. You prefer acid, sanding, blasting, or other to deal with deep rust pits. HELP ME. Thanks Billy J.

    The width of your pattern and distance from your work is the Span Of The Hand. With a Candy paint your overlap is minimum 75%

    We noticed in a recent video you were using an electric da sander. My husband is disabled in a wheel chair and he thought that would be better than an air one. WE live outside of moncton and have been trying to find one. Where did you get yours? We watch every video, it is amasing what you do.
