    My mom's comic-loving friend got my mom and I into Fables. I was perhaps a bit young for the material at first (I'm pretty sure I stared wide-eyed and embarrassed when I saw that panel of Charming at that waitress's apartment, and that's not to mention the blood, gore, and swearing in the series), but I still enjoyed it, and I latched on to the kid characters hard. (Pinocchio doesn't count as a kid character, if you've read the series. That is a grown-ass man in a 10-year-old's body. Not that I dislike him, he's just not as cool as the cubs.)

    • @ElliotEdits

    Love the old fables told since I was a child, it will teach children to be wise and be more morally inclined to goodness. Disney did change the way it was meant to be taught to make younger ones not be turned off by the original tale of reality featured...

    AND ALSO. My mom was always hoping the story would bring in tales from East Asia, but we didn't get much of that. The characters are largely European except for Mowgli (who was created by a European writer) and a handful of ambiguously Arab characters. I understand the spinoff comics has more of that, though, like the spinoff Rapunzel comic that takes place partially in Japan and has at least one kitsune.
    Speaking of the spinoffs, my mom and I did start reading Jack of Fables, but _oh my gosh_ Jack is waaay too unlikable for either of us. His supporting cast is great--love the Pathetic Fallacy, love the Page sisters, love Alice. But oh my gosh, Jack could not get injured enough for me!

    • @ElliotEdits
      @ElliotEdits  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Haha! I totally agree with you, Jack was never my choice for a spin off. Much better as a main series character Bigby could bully.
      The one volume of Fairest I have read was the one centred around Rapunzel. It does tackle Japanese folklore and sparked an interest in me. Would recommend!

      @@francoisdemorcy5084Disney didn't mess it up
      The writers did because they never expected the show to be that much of a hit and last multiple seasons

    Where would you draw the line between a fairy tale and a fable? I would have qualified Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen as the former, though I can see the argument. Just curious about your take on the semantics more than anything

    • @ElliotEdits
      @ElliotEdits  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question! In my head there's a lot of crossover, but I guess a fable contains a moral or life-lesson at the heart of it. Fairy tales are typically aimed at children, so I suppose it's a case of watering down a fable to make it suitable for a younger audience.

      The story lumps fairy tales, nursery rhymes, and fables together as one general idea. In fact, since the writer and artist initially weren't aware that the king monkey in The Jungle Book (I forgot his name) was in fact not in the public domain but a creation of Disney, they mistakenly put one mention of him in there (I think he just showed up in one or two panels of Mowgli's memory). He was never mentioned again, so you could just chalk it up to error... _or_ you could suppose there are characters in the Homelands or in Exile who are not in the public domain, but they just happen not to be in the story for convenience's sake. Maybe modern, copyrighted stories are there!
