  • I'm pulling a very heavy 20 foot loaded shipping container with a 12k badlands winch from Harbor Freight. Well let me just say I pushed the winch too far....
For those looking into shipping container homes and wanting to move a container around on a budget on your own time then check out these videos.

Another way is to jack the container up enough to put a a couple pieces of pipe under to reduce the friction.

I was seriously thinking of doing that, I have a pile of 6 to 12 inch diameter logs 10 feet long I was thinking of putting some under the container. But after I found what the container was getting caught up it was all good and back to moving along. Off video I did try jacking up the container with a 4 ton bottle jack, and it could not do it.

I have the same winch. One thing that I noticed about it is that the cables HF used on it are CCA and not pure copper. If you have the opportunity to swap all the cables out, I believe the winch will not only perform better but also run cooler. Otherwise, you can't beat it for the price.

Hey thanks for the comment! Your right about that, the conductivity is reduced quite a bit with CCA cables vs pure copper. I was reading at one site which says a jumper cable needs to be sized up two sizes for CCA to match a pure copper cable.

Great video with shocking results, Next time you do a heavy heavy pull have a couple of bags of ice on hand and it will keep the winch cool, Old snowmobile trick , Thank you for sharing .

Hey Bobby! thank you for the comment. Great idea and I'm sure it will work based on another method I ended up using to finish the pull, I'll be posting that video in the coming weeks.

Should use wheel chocks and parking brake to take the strain off of the transmission

Hi, Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment! Yeah, I do use the parking break, but not a fan of chocking the tires with extremely hard pulls it just puts more forces on the tranny, suspension and steering linkages. I've rather see the truck slide then just switch to a different anchor strategy at that point.
My favorite is to just burry a large log 4 foot long 1 foot diameter with a couple chains rapped around it when there is no other good natural anchor point, but I have a backhoe so it makes doing this easy and only a few minutes. In this video I did just that th-cam.com/video/AlXktsIlI7s/w-d-xo.html very little force on the truck with a 3 to 1 rigging on the buried log anchor's, this video I did snap a chain though...

Cables make so anxious... really enjoy my synthetic rope

Yeah, 65 foot rubber band if it snaps, could certainly cause some carnage with the weight of the cable. Did you see this video I posted th-cam.com/users/shortsAlXktsIlI7s?feature=share the cable did not snap but the chain anchoring it did.
The problem I have with synthetic rope for the work I do is that any rubbing against nearly anything not perfectly smooth will cause frays and severely damage the integrity of the rope and in the trash the rope goes. I do a lot of weird pulls where the cable has rubbed up against rocks, concrete, logs, other hard surfaces, and its always getting buried with dirt that would destroy a synthetic rope quick.
If I had a front winch permanently mounted to my trucks front end and I was mainly using it for self recovery I would have a synthetic and have a 6 foot protective sleeve on it. One thing I like about synthetic is how light they are and they don't build up so much kinetic energy compared to heavy cable.

Technically you didn’t have 24K since your spool was 3/4 loaded, I’m guessing around 15k. Hard on DC motors to run them close to stall. Should have run more cable out or added a third line. I run a 9K and 95% of the time it’s 2 part.
