Clara Peller (August 4, 1902 - August 11, 1987) was a Russian-born American manicurist and television personality who, already an octogenarian, starred in the 1984 "Where's the beef?" advertising campaign for the Wendy's fast food restaurant chain.
Born in Imperial Russia,[1] in 1902, one of eight or nine children born to Wolf Swerdlove (Swerdlov/Sverdlov; died 1949) and Yudis (aka "Julia" or "Judith") Tilkin (or Tilken; died 1952), young Clara spent most of her early life in Chicago. Her father left Russia when he was being drafted for the second time, and they settled down in Illinois. Clara married at age 20 to a local jeweler, William Peller. They had a son (Leslie) and a daughter (Marlene), but later divorced. She never remarried. She worked for 35 years as a manicurist at a local Chicago beauty salon, and later moved to the suburban North Shore area to be near her daughter, Marlene Necheles.
At age 80, Peller was hired as a temporary manicurist for a television commercial set in a Chicago barbershop. Impressed by her no-nonsense manners and unique voice, the agency later asked her to sign a contract as an actress for the agency. Though hard of hearing and suffering from emphysema, which limited her ability to speak long lines of dialogue, Peller was quickly used in a number of TV spot advertisements. She first attracted attention as a comical cleaning lady in an advertisement for the new Massachusetts State Lottery game "Megabucks", and later nationally in a series of commercials for the Wendy's restaurant chain.
While hugely popular, the advertising campaign proved to be short-lived, at least for Wendy's. Peller had made actor-scale wages - $317.40 per day - for the initial Wendy's TV commercial of the campaign in January 1984. Her fee for subsequent work as a Wendy's spokesperson was not disclosed, though Peller acknowledged in an interview with People magazine that she had earned $30,000 from the first two commercials and profits from product tie-in sales. Wendy's later stated that the company had paid Peller a total of $500,000 for her work on the campaign, though Peller denied earning that much.
Per the terms of her Screen Actors Guild union contract, the actress was free to participate in any commercials for products, goods or services, which did not directly compete with Wendy's hamburgers. She subsequently signed a contract with the Campbell Soup Company to appear in an advertisement for Prego Pasta Plus spaghetti sauce. In the Prego commercial, Peller examines the Prego sauce and after wondering "Where's the beef?" declares, "I found it! I really found it". However, after the Prego commercial aired on television in 1985, Wendy's management decided to terminate her contract, contending that the Prego commercial implies "that Clara found the beef at somewhere other than Wendy's restaurants" In announcing the dismissal, Wendy's Denny Lynch stated, "Clara can find the beef only in one place, and that is Wendy's". Peller responded, "I've made them millions, and they don't appreciate me."
Peller died on August 11, 1987, in Chicago, one week after her 85th birthday, from congestive heart failure. She is buried at Waldheim Jewish Cemetery in Forest Park, Illinois.
How Scott doesn’t have the size following he deserves blows my mind! The man puts effort into researching and studying each person he covers. Not only that but he doesn’t just do a video on a person bc of requests he only does a video if he has some sort of connection to them from having watched them as a kid or any other time in life. Keep rocking Scott and safe travels out their on the road.
I totally 👍 agree ❤
225K isn't a small feat.
Agreed he is the best creator that I have found.
Depends on what ppl like. But this lady was so funny. Loved the commercial
You are definitely making a Factual Statement 💯🌟
I love this lady her commercials were legendary 🍔 I'm old enough to of seen theses adds in " real time " from the 80s. I was unaware that she had been fired until now🥺 God rest her soul Clara will always be a 80s legend " WHERES THE BEEF " 😂
One of the greatest commercial catchphrases you could ever hear!
She seemed so sweet and funny. I'm glad she's at peace with her family. ❤
I worked for a monument company in the late 80's and went to Waldheim cemetery at least twice a week its a huge cemetery. I accidentally found Claras grave right after she was buried there I found the stick with her name on it before her stone was put in. She was awesome keep up the great work Scott.
I still say "where's the beef?!?" She was so awesome. This was great Scott!!! I love when you choose topics that are not often requested. I thoroughly enjoyed this and thank you 😊❤😊
Gang deer😂😂😂
Clara was great. The Wendys' commercials were soooo funny with Clara. Wendy's had a good thing and should never have let her go. She was engrained in our minds and our hearts. Bad move Wendy's. RIP Clara. You put alot of smiles on alot of faces towards the end. I still recall the commercials and am still looking, to be honest, for the beef. hahahahaha
I loved Clara and missed her when I no longer got to see her. She was everywhere there for a while! She was so funny! I never knew anything about her personal life. What an adventurous life she had! Thanks for this one Scott! RIP Clara!
Yes I luv her too
I remember that commercial Where's the beef! She was iconic during the 80's for sure. Loved it! Got a real kick out of it as a kid. 😂 RIP Claire 😢❤ Thank you Scott
Oh I loved that commercial🤣She did such a great job for Wendy's
Thank you Scott I love going to Wendy's Dave Thomas was the man I can't remember when he passed away do you? Thank you Scott once again
A few years ago now
@@SCOTTONTAPE wait I remember 2002
I’m from Chicago and never knew she was from here 😲. I use to love this lady. I always wondered why she wasn’t doing the Wendy’s commercials. And no the deer’s won’t do nothing to you. If anything they run from you. Usually here in Chicago, the cemeteries are their home. Great video!! It would of been nice to meet you. Maybe taking you for lunch!?!❤
Next time for sure!
Thanks Clara 😊for your incredible slogan 😊
I loved watching Clara's commercial in the 80's .Clara was a breath of fresh air on TV .I still say -Where's The Beef ? . Thank you, Scott for this nice vlog. Loved the deer. R.I.P. Clara Peller🪆🕎🌷.
Being in the UK, I've never heard of this lady. A shame she got fired, but I suppose if you do something your employer isn't happy with, they don't take your age into consideration. Thanks for the video, I've learned something new 😊
Nor should they.
I was terribly afraid of her when I was a little girl. I really don't know why? Even her voice scared the daylights out of me. 😹 Now that I'm grown, she just looks like a sweet little old lady. 💙

Later in time of Clara's in life she was in need of hearing aids, I was honored to make the reverse mold and plastic shell of her ear, and I had been a couple of the crew that made her hearing aids.
I was told she was so deaf that during the commercials someone was hiding under the table and gave a tug of her skirt when it was time for her to say her wonderful verbal line
" where's the beef". I enjoyed seeing her on TV and remembering the stories about her.
Moving Violations! Nice flashback! My favorite scene in that movie was with grandpa and the bowling ball. This was a nice video on Clara. Thanks for pulling this one together Scott.
I love that commercial. Where is the beef and Wendy’s is my favorite place to eat at for fast food
Being from uk,don't know this lovely lady.. loving the deer. Takecare Scott. Xx❤
Ty, Scott for respecting the nature around you.
I love this old lady and her commercials shame Wendy's did not let her still do the commercials RIP Clara and hope Scott you put like on my message thanks for sharing and giving us the details and showing the old commercials she has done!!
I had not heard of Clara, but that is probably because of being born in the 80's myself. Enjoyed watching this video of her story! Hopefully there is work being done on the cemetery
Such a memorable lady and commercial!!! So glad you went to pay respects to Clara! Cool lady. Rest in peace 🌷 🙏
I’m so happy you did this video of Clara always wondered where her resting place was ❤
I remember this commercial and the sweet lady. she was funny. scott is the sweetest to remember the dearly departed. i've never been much of a grave vistor, i guess because i can honor people differently. 🥰❤💚from Vickie ps im such an animal lover and i love the deer.
I remember Clara and her commercials. So glad you did this video on her. Greta work, Scott.
Hi Scott love your videos 💙
I remember "Where's the beef?" so well - she was so cute! Had not idea she was fired - interesting tidbit! Love how you dig and find interesting facts to share! The deer were cute - blocking your path out! Thanks again, Scott for taking us along!
Good Evening Scott 🙋🏽. This commercial was so funny to me ‼️ IT WAS sad when she died. Thank you for inviting me to watch your video.❤
Thank you, Scott.
This is such a haphazard cemetery 🫤
I remember "Where's the beef!?" LOL 👵

Always liked Clara...
Thanks for bringing her memory back to us, Scott-you’re Awesome!!!
😇
🙏🏻
I remember these commercials well. Only a year is very surprising. Great content, Scott 👍👏
My Dad was great friends with Nedra Volz. She always spoke highly of Clara. RIP Clara.
PS Nedra was in Moving Violations with Clara, also the old lady in Earth Girls Are Easy walking out of salon when Geena was walking in.
Really enjoyed this tribute to Clara Scott. Thanks for doing this for her. ❤
Me and my mom were just talking about this the other day and I swore up n down that the old lady from goonies and " where's the beef" lady were the same!! Boy, was I wrong....ty for setting me straight, Scott
Thank you for the variety of people you take time to research and put in much hard work to bring these videos to us.
Great video, Scott! As a kid of the 80’s, I forget about so much until you remind us. Thank you!
I had no idea she was buried there. I drove past the cemetery all of the time.
Hey Scott, Wow! What a story. I remember both of those commercials she did...ah memories. How can they fire a sweet little old Lady like that? Vultures! Glad those deer didn't get hurt or that you didn't get stomped by them. So considerate of you to switch paths like that. Great video...as always. Be safe and take care...🥰✌
It’s funny how a few words of expressions can be so catchy and memorable
That dear lady was beloved
Hi Scott, I remember her. She is so cute. What a full cemetery, huge! Seeing the deer was nice too, I see deer walking around my place sometimes, lol. Thanks for leaving a rock for her. Take care Scott. Debbie in Calgary
Ill be 45 i definitely remember wheres the beef. 80s commercial vault is a great channel here on TH-cam that has all those old commercials
SUCH AN ICONIC COMM.WHEN I WAS GROEWINGUP IN 80S.WHERES THE BEEF!
Miss her so much😢 Thank you for sharing😊👍
Hi Scott! Being in the UK, I'd not heard of this lady, but imagine her being your grandma and being so proud of her fame! Love the deer that came to visit, I'd be distracted and end up talking to them as well!
You almost have to talk to them. They outright confront you and ask: " Who the heck are you, and why are you here?" 😄I watch another cemetery creator who lives in Chicago. He has probably been to all those cemeteries. The deer seem rather confrontational in every Chicago cemetery! 😆
So remember Clara Peller when she worked for Wendy's commercials, Where's the beef" was and is so iconic still. thanks Scott for doing this
love that beef lady! great memories! thanks scott
Scott!! U R So Amazing!! Thanks 🙏 For Sharing These Wonderful Stories!!!
I was born and raise in Chicago, Illinois. I never knew Claira Peller was from Chicago. Thanks for sharing this video. I learned something new.

Hi Scott I appreciate the work and effort you put into your videos. Great Job
I loved her she was adorable you can fire an 80 year old when you have no heart cause they didn’t apparently amazing video as usual stay safe out there much love always ❤
Scott weird personal note about me. When I was pregnant in 1984 Clara's slogan was one of the hottest phrases going. Lucky for me, that pregnancy I was a perfect basketball shaped tummy. As a joke on my husband to embarrass him I had a special shirt made up that read ...
I FOUND THE BEEF !!! He was So twisted about it 😂. Thanks for remembering Clara.
Thanks for the shoutout, my friend! Glad to do what I can for Find A Grave. Been a member for almost 22 years and I love it! Thanks for joining The Silent Forgotten! P. S. L👀k out for those 🦌🦌🦌Chicago street gangs!🦌🦌🦌
We just call them Bambis.😂
I feel very disrespected If I had one of my family members In that cemetary, All those crooked and fallen over head stones, I mean I know maybe they can't afford a grounds crew but sheesh can they pick up the head stones that have fully fallen over and put them back up right please!!!! Great video Scott.
That area can’t sub stain the bad weather so a lot of graves get replaced a lot
@@valeriesteward8062 You mean that's normal and just how It Is?
OMG Scott! This brought back sooo many memories. I remember this commercial when I was a kid It played all the time. The reason this is so funny and brings back so many memories is because, my mom used to always ask my dad “where’s the beef”. He didn’t think it was funny lolol. 🤗
Awwww funny little lady I remember those commercials back in the 80s, nice video 😊
Hey Scott….sorry I’ve been away! As usual, another great video! 👍🏻 very informational! Thank you!
Gosh a walk down memory lane. I remember her and the commercial 's. Thanks for doing this.
You need one of those things like you had on the Richard Simmons episode. “GARY”
“Where’s the beef”
😂😂 classic! This was a gem 💎
I was working for Wendy's when the Where's the Beef commercial was playing. I would get customers asking where's the beef, lol. RIP in Clara.
Beautiful cemetery, too bad it's not maintained like it should be. Another great video Scott🎉
I remember her! Good video and bless you for caring about the deer not getting hit 😊❤
That’s one crowded cemetery. And some very old headstones. I find them absolutely fascinating. Best job I had was working for a cemetery in nj. Fascinating stories of some who were buried there. I worked in the office and loved it! Also, some hands on work in the cemetery itself. Love you videos and look forward to many more.
I haven’t heard of this lady but thank you for telling us all about her Scott
RIP Clara Peller
I remember her..and her spot on that Wendy's commercial..back then. She ate in my uncle's restaurant in Hinsdale ,IL. She was a regular ..she would say you got the beef..!!
Scott you are too Kool. Thank you for this one. The deer whisperer ❤
Oh man! I loved those commercials as a kid! Thank u Scott! Fun fact about me: my great grama’s name was Clara. Subsequently it’s my daughter’s middle name. Love what you do!
You couldnt help but love Clara, so funny! I never knew about her being fired, that was so wrong (IMO)!!
The very first time I was taken out to my Sons grave, after his service, my MIL and I saw a big, beautiful buck deer. It stopped and looked at us for a bit, than casually walked away into the trees behind him. So thats why there are pictures of buck deer on their headstone (hes buried with his father). It looked like these guys wanted to play with you, Scott.
Such a sweet video, Scott, thank you!!!
Rest In Peace, Clara.🌹
I'm so sorry for your loss. 💔💔
@@fuzzamajumula
Thank you so much!
You are right in forest park , IL Down the street from forest park blue line station it is about 3 cemetery around that area . Great video
Thank you for your videos. How about David Strickland? Still sad till this day.
That is a well populated cemetary!
Poor Scott. Stalked by deer! 😂
😂😂😂
I saw her in a parade in 1985. Probably the first celebrity I ever got to see in person.
Great videos Scott those deer did not want to let you leave they were blocking you in they were adorable great works. Keep it up God bless my friend be safe in your traveling😊❤
Hey Scott!!! I didn’t know she was at that cemetery, I’m always in that area going to Walmart or Portillos🙏🏽❤️
😂😂 i remember when where's the beef came out . .commercial s back in the 80s had alot of catchy commercials .I havent seen anyone really do this one ,thank you Scott for sharing this fun video 📷📷
Where's the beef? It's under the pickle!! I was a teen when this commercial came out, and I worked for Wendy's at the time. I found the beef under the pickle AKA that's where I met my husband lol Thanks Scott for the walk down memory lane. Please stay safe!!!
Found the beef under the pickle lolol
This was good and really interesting . Thanks Scott .
Cool video Scott. I remember my father in the 70’s would call Whataburger-Whatabun.
Wish I could have known you were here I knew it was waldhiem have family there I do remember her ❤
Falling branches also known as widow makers. First thing you do when working under trees is look up for widow makers. Why buy a mattress anywhere else with a little jingle. We get Canada radio here on the st Lawrence sometimes.
"Where's the grave??" YOU ARE TOO FUNNY SCOTT!
Love that you were concerned about the deer running the wrong way. Where’s the Deer?
Shoot, 85 is amazing. Both of my parents both passed at age 71 and 72, both from cancers (thanks, camp Lejeune)
Thanks for sharing.
I'm 46 and her commercials are engrained in my mind. Remember having stickers of her on my school binders even.
It's actually Forest Park, Illinois. She's buried behind in the cemetery south of the Walmart on Des Plaines Avenue.
Sad to see Stones fallen over, I worked at a Cemetery for 15 years and we would always stand them up and level them out, even fix them and glue them together.
