Family Feud is an American television game show created by Mark Goodson. It features two families who compete to name the most popular answers to survey questions in order to win cash and prizes. The show has had three separate runs, the first of which started in 1976. Its original run from 1976 to 1985 aired on ABC and in syndication, with Richard Dawson as host. In 1988, the series was revived and aired on both CBS and in syndication with Ray Combs hosting until 1994, with Dawson returning until that version ended in 1995.
Raymond Neil Combs Jr. (April 3, 1956 - June 2, 1996) was an American actor, comedian and game show host. Combs began his professional career in the late 1970s. His popularity on the stand-up circuit led to him being signed as the second host of the game show Family Feud in its second run and first revival. The show aired on CBS from 1988-1993 and was in syndication from 1988-1994. From 1995 to 1996, Combs hosted another game show, Family Challenge.
Raymond Neil Combs Jr. was born in Hamilton, Ohio, on April 3, 1956. He graduated in 1974 from Garfield High School, where he was an actor, senior class president, and Boys State delegate. He declined a nomination to the United States Military Academy and served as a missionary from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for two years in Arizona.
In 1988, game-show producers Mark Goodson and Howard Felsher gave Combs a seven-year contract to host a new version of Family Feud. The program premiered on July 4, 1988 on CBS's daytime lineup, and a syndicated version was launched on September 19. According to Feud announcer Gene Wood, Combs also toured extensively around the United States to promote the show, and made guest appearances on Card Sharks (Eubanks) and The Price Is Right to discuss the new version of Family Feud.
On June 29, 1992, CBS expanded the daytime show from 30 minutes to one hour. A new "Bullseye" round was added and the show was retitled Family Feud Challenge. On September 14, 1992, the Bullseye round was integrated into the syndicated run, which remained 30 minutes in length, but was renamed as The New Family Feud. Combs was one of the most seen hosts on television during the 1992-93 season, with an hour and a half of Family Feud airing five days a week.
While Combs enjoyed hosting Family Feud, he grew increasingly frustrated by the rigid formula of the show. He pressured his agent to find new opportunities for him in acting and comedy.
Midway through the 1992-93 season, ratings for the show began to plummet. CBS cancelled the daytime version in early 1993, with the final new episode airing March 26 (reruns aired through September 10), as many CBS affiliates had dropped the show entirely by that time. The syndicated version was also on the verge of cancellation (as many stations had also dropped that or moved it into overnight time slots). Jonathan Goodson, who had become chairman of Mark Goodson Productions after the death of his father, Mark Goodson, in 1992, decided to replace Combs with original host Richard Dawson.
By all accounts Combs was hurt by his dismissal from the show. In his final episode, after signing off for the final time, he immediately walked off the set, got into his dressing room to change, left the studio and drove home without saying goodbye to anyone.
On June 1, 1996, police were called to Combs' home in Glendale, California, over reports of a disturbance. Combs had reportedly destroyed most of the inside of his house, and had also been banging his head against the walls, though Combs later told the police that he fell in the jacuzzi. Shortly after police arrived, Combs' estranged wife Debbie arrived and informed them that Combs was suicidal and had spent the previous week in the hospital for a suicide attempt. He was taken by police to Glendale Adventist Medical Center, where he was assessed by a medical doctor and placed on a 72-hour psychiatric observation hold. On June 2, 1996, at around 4:10 a.m., hospital personnel discovered Combs hanging by his bed sheets in the closet of his room. He was taken to the emergency room, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. His death was ruled a suicide.
On June 7, 1996, Combs' funeral was held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Glendale. His remains were flown back to his hometown of Hamilton, Ohio, where he was interred at the Greenwood Cemetery. Combs was survived by his parents, Ray Sr. and Anita Jean Combs; his wife; and their six children.

I worked on a TV series called Dear John. The show was on NBC TV from 1988 until 1992. We had 90 episodes plus the pilot. Ray was our warm up comic for about 40 of those shows. He was the best and funniest warm up comic I have ever seen. He worked with no script. He might say "Where you from?" and no matter where they were from, Ray made it funny. He was also a normal guy who could carry on a sensible conversation. I talked with him every night that he worked the audience of our show. He was nice and friendly and a great comic. I was in Hollywood for many years. I first saw warm up comics working the crowd in 1956. I saw George Gobel warming up his audience and in 1997 I watched Bob Newhart warm up his audience for the show George and Leo. Ray was better at warm up comedy than anyone else I watched. The warm up comic has to keep talking until the next scene with different wardrobe is ready and he has to make 300 people laugh and stay focused on what is being filmed. I never knew Ray had a care in the world until his early exit from our world. RIP, Ray.

My daughter did the exact same thing almost 3 years ago.. she had been ill for about 3-4 years.. her own thoughts and strange voices shouting at her all night. Then she said they were now bothering her all the time.. she took her life because she felt like she was going crazy. She was 25. You covered this so gently but to the point. Very sad story.

His wife answered his text message to inform me of the horrible news. He had a massive stroke in his classroom, and was discovered on the floor with his eyes wide open. He died about 5 days later while in a coma. The school principal confessed to me that maybe my friend was given too many assignments. He never complained. He seemed perfectly healthy when I saw him in May at our other friend's funeral. But he was hospitalized in April for pulmonary embolism. He's had the blood clot issues for at least a decade. They told his wife he had a heart attack. She found him. I just wonder if he had a coronary thrombosis that caused the heart attack. He was was excited about his daughter's upcoming wedding and becoming a grandfather. He was 54. So young 😢 those blood clots are nothing to mess around with.

Thank you so much for this tribute. My family and I were contestants on The New Family Feud on two separate occasions in 1993, both with Ray Combs as host. He was genuinely the sweetest person! The whole entire production staff loved him, and they had nothing but wonderful things to say about him, which was 180 degrees away from how they felt about Richard Dawson. Whereas they all said that Ray Combs was an absolute delight, one producer told us that Richard Dawson was the type of person who would wake up thinking of mean things to do to people. I couldn't believe that Ray was replaced by Dawson, and I know the staff could not have been happy about it. My understanding is that it was all about ratings. So tragic! I've heard stories about Ray's compassion and generosity and I know just from meeting him that he was a genuinely good guy, and not just putting on a show for the show. May his beautiful soul forever rest in peace, and may God bless his family and friends and all who love him to this day. ♥️♥️

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with Ray. This is exactly what I was hoping to find in the comment section. I think it's very important that people like yourself come forward and share their positive experience. I never questioned for one moment that he was a very loving and generous man. Nothing was mentioned about his six children but my suspicions are he was also a very good father. We don't see a lot of people in Show Business with families of that size. Anyway I do digress. Thanks again for ending such a sad story on a much cheerful note.

@genapruitt 🌿I believe what you heard from the crew about both Richard and Ray. I'm so glad the TV app on my phone shows many episodes with Ray as the host now. He put everyone at ease and had the contestants laughing and teasing him back. I watched Dawson's version when it was the only one shown because I love the game. Richard has been said to be moody, mean and was always forcing kisses on the women. Cringe! He'd swear that the 4 kisses per guest were "for luck." Every other host of Family Feud did a better job of entertaining than Dawson.
Ray needed a better agent that would appreciate his talent. Any of us could have found him a good job! And then knowing he was dealing with constant pain explained a lot. No wonder he was struggling. I hope his children know how many of us thought he was great and how sorry we are for their loss.💜🍀💚

That must've been quite an honor, you and your family got to play on the show and see Ray in person. He was the host I grew up with and still is my favorite of all the hosts. He always did strike me as a nice and cheerful guy, and he was a most talented TV personality, I know many would agree, including yourself. When Mark Goodson was around, Ray always had someone to vouch for him, when Mark passed away and his son Jonathan took over, that was probably the point whe a number of negative turns took place. But yes Ray is most certainly at peace now, and made a huge positive difference in the world, no one can ever take that from him.
Am guessing you and your family played as a regular team, then came back for an allstar or returning champion match or something like that?

He was placed on a 72-hour psychiatric observation hold when he died by hanging himself with the bedsheets. That shouldn't have even been allowed to happen. My mom, when she was in the hospital, she was just tired of being in the hospital so she made a threat saying she was going to jump out of the window. She was wheelchair bound - there's no way it would have happened - but they STILL had someone watch over her in the room for the next 2-3 days.

Although Richard Dawson was my favorite host of Family Feud Ray Combs did an awesome job. It's so sad what happened to him. I guess we all have a breaking point, but most don't take it this far. I have two nephews that committed suicide and it's a horrible devastation for the family and one you don't see coming. My nephew Cecil had a strong Faith in God. His last post on Fb was a meme that read "Every day we live is a gift, so thank God in the morning for another day of life and thank Him in the evening for getting you through another day". He was always posting inspirational memes, so no one thought anything of it. He hung himself later that day which was this past August. I myself saw a meme once that read "Depression looks like this" and it was a picture of several laughing and smiling faces. Depression is a silent killer, and we all need to be on the lookout for each other. RIP to Ray Combs. I hope he has found his happy place. 🙏❤

What a trip to come across this video as I was just thinking of him the other day. I used to live in Glendale and met Ray at the Barnes and Noble one night with my husband. We randomly started talking in one of the aisles and had a wonderful conversation with him. He happened to live down the street from my mom's house at the time, didn't know until he mentioned it to us, and was so welcoming that he invited us to his place. We stopped over and had a couple of glasses of wine with him, met his wife and some of his kids. I could tell his wife was a little put off by us coming over, I'm thinking that maybe Ray did this a lot which would probably not sit well sometimes, but she was pleasant and we didn't stay very long. My husband met up with him after our encounter, he was a real estate agent at the time and Ray wanted to pick his brain, but then communication suddenly stopped. We didn't think much of it except that he probably just got busy. It wasn't long after the communication stopped that we heard about his suicide which was incredibly sad and a bit hard to deal with considering we met his family and understood their loss. He seemed so pleasant and welcoming, so authentic and genuinely personable. I did think it was kind of odd that he felt that comfortable with us to invite us over, but we were nice people and loved to talk so we just blew it off. I hope and pray he found the peace he was looking for.

Scott, not many people would cover a story of suicide. Yet I know as in all your videos you handle them with a special sensitivity. I didn't know he had pass at all. You know I have a special female friend, we dated for some years but I ended it because she was an alcoholic that wasn't getting any better . We stayed in touch occasionally. Her sister had just passed from years of drug abuse. She called me a few weeks later and told me that she felt she shouldn't no longer be here. What?!!! I told her I was on my way . She told me , she wouldn't let me in. Anyway I contacted her family who had a key. This was six months ago. She's in rehab currently with professional counseling. Great job on your story as always.

You just give an honest, respectful summary. I know from some of your other videos that you are a wrestling fan, like me, and I remember Ray, not only from the Family Feud, but also from his guest hosting spot at Weestlemania VIII. He seem like a very likable person with really great comedic timing and instincts. It’s such a shame that, ostensibly, he viewed his life as a failure or so low to the point where he couldn’t recover. To a certain degree it’s understandable because it’s easy to get unbelievably overwhelmed in moments of darkness; I’m sure we’ve all been there. But it’s hard to look at this man as anything other than a success from where I’m sitting.

Some extremely shocking and others not but either way it always leaves behind a heartache that is undeniable one of the worst. The feeling of guilt and not being good enough to stay around for. A heavy burden to leave loved ones with. I do know this for a solid fact it is very hard on your soul. We don't just disappear from existence we do go on and when you damage your soul like that it carries on with that same hurt you took your life for. It is only in time which not known to us it takes to be able to move on. Please if you feel this in any type of way seek help. Today's problems can be fixed if you only give it a tomorrow.
