- This is a complete transcription of everything played by piano and bass on the recording of "Spain" from the Akoustic Band trio album (Chick Corea, John Patitucci, Dave Weckl) from 1989.
I think this is one of the greatest piano solos ever recorded. The way it builds up over 8 choruses from the feel at the start - a kind of half-time with loads of space - through a samba in the middle - to the last 3 choruses of swing, is just incredible. I love the way the final solo segues into the reprise of the head and it has a completely different energy from the head at the beginning. The melodic invention in the piano solo is amazing throughout. Also amazing is the way Patitucci and Weckl propel the whole thing along - it's like the piano is flying weightlessly through the air. I hope people find this transcription interesting and helpful to understand better what these amazing musicians are playing!

Armando Anthony "Chick" Corea (June 12, 1941 - February 9, 2021) Thank you for everything you did for music. You were a giant of the 20th & 21st century.
How can only 7.128 people in the world need this. I thank you so much for this transcription. Excellent work.
haha thanks. It's not been up that long so maybe a few more people haven't realised they need it yet!
To my mind this is an extremely special track - possibly one of the most interesting and creative versions of this classic Corea piece. Though equally remarkable is this really excellent transcription and video of such. So much talent all round. Thanks so so much for sharing your wonderful work and that of the amazing Chick Corea.
A really incredible recording and transcription! Thank you so much for sharing this!!

I heard this version somewhere and loved it so much but couldn't find it for so long... Now I found it here with the score !!!!! Thank you so so much!!!!
Finally! My favorite version since its release in 1989. Many thanks for this!
Also in my opinion this version of Spain is the best ever. Chick demonstrated his flair and talent here by demonstrating a different approach for each genre. R.i.p Chick

Wow.
Nice work on the transcription!
Great job❤
Geez mate, great work
Great work! Unusual to see youtube transcriptions that are enharmonically correct.
But all those dotted crotchets (quarter notes) (m.77, m.84, m.87 et al)... I'm not sure when it became the fashion not to show the beat in the notation.. am I just old? It's so much easier to read when you use crotchets/quarters and tied quavers/eights when appropriate. Wonder if it's a musescore/finale/sib/dorico 'default'.
Not trying to hate - well done, this is a great transcription.
Thanks for your comment. Not quite sure what you mean by default - or by "fashion". Obviously if you're the one making the transcription then you decide how to notate it, I've made my own decisions about everything based on what I think is the best/clearest option in every case. Sometimes tying things over makes it easier to read when syncopations are complex/inconsistent. I wouldn't for example use a half-note for the tie-over in b83 (that would just be wrong). For relatively simple cases, especially in the context of a samba feel where the 3+3+2 rhythm is hardly even a syncopation, I think it's unnecessarily pedantic to tie everything over when you cross the half-bar. And something like b82 - you would see this kind of rhythm notated the same way in a Beethoven symphony.
Awesome job 👌

graciasssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
Amazing job!! May I ask how you went about transcribing the music?
Thanks! With this one it was made easier by the fact I'd learnt the whole piano solo by ear years ago and still remembered it, so there were just a few things I had to check and tricky rhythms I had to figure out how best to notate. I started with this. And I know the recording so well from repeated listening over the years that most of the other material in the piano part was pretty well in my memory as well. For stuff that required slightly more active listening, like getting the rhythms in the intro and transcribing the whole bass line, it was just a lot of playing back small snippets - sometimes a few times - and continually pausing to write as I went along.
@@SamHogarthMusic Thank you, very interesting to know. Much respect for your dedication and study!
How do i get the transcriptions ? I can't find a link. Is it no longer available
Hi, it's available direct from me. Best thing is to message me on Instagram - @samhogarthmusic. You can also send me an email via my website samhogarth [dot] net
Would you be able to do piano for “a night away” brad Meldau and pat metheny
I'll try and have a look sometime but got too much on right now and don't have any time for transcription unfortunately!
the s is silent
This version was artistic for sure, but very abstract; I prefer the earlier, the more authentic one.
Check out th-cam.com/video/einFzkwClwQ/w-d-xo.html for a transcription (not by me) of the same tune played by Chick Corea as a solo
i want notes spain
