When you say it can also be a continuing action into the future ....doesn't that make it perfect continuous ???
Great question! The difference between the present perfect and the present perfect progressive (continuous) is related to future time (uses/examples 2 and 3).
Here are the uses:
Use the present perfect for (1) an action that happened in the past at an undefined time, or (2) an action that started in the past and continued to the present and MIGHT continue in the future. Use the present perfect progressive for (3) an action that started in the past, continues to the present, and WILL continue in the future for sure.
Here are some examples:
(1) I have already studied Chapter 5. (PP - finished action)
(2) I have lived in Colombia for the past two years. (PP - focus is on the last two years - we're not sure if the speaker will continue living there or will move)
(3) I have been living in Colombia for the past two years. (PPP - focus is on the last two years and the future - we're sure the speaker will continue living there)
