    I think the addition of drive gauge so that super meter is exclusively for super moves is kind of like how mortal Kombat added fatal blow to replace x-ray moves so that you have it separate from your meters to use for breakaway and enhanced specials. really good changes on both counts even if at this point I've watched each fatal blow like a million times and they aren't special anymore

    • @LostbyElysium
      @LostbyElysium ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You’re right. Having a mechanic that allows you to close in space, extend simple normal combos, or use EX moves in the very beginning is great. I’ve always been mediocre in fighting games and what always frustrated me is how hard it is to close down on someone that has great spacing and footsies. This allows me to close in with better options or do more damage when I do manage to land a hit

    The closing statements about EX moves totally mirrors my experience: as much as I knew in the back of my mind that EX moves were very important and technically worth spending on, I never wanted to sacrifice my painstakingly built-up-from-zero meter on something that wasn't a big flashy super. Now that EX moves are used with drive gauge, which is separate from super meter and starts at full and regens over time, I find myself for the first time ever using EX moves! It's certainly quite the interesting trick they've pulled for getting newbies like me to utilize mechanics, maybe even more so than modern controls in my opinion!

      That's cool, but the moment they allowed this in ranked, ranked became meaningless. You don't get to press two buttons and do the same combo that would take me 11 unique inputs. And they didn't learn from SFV, still no meterless reversals, just the trivial new drive system and anti grab or EX. that's it. it's actually worse than Tekken which has alot of options when you get knocked down instead of 1 or two. Forcing you to use their trash Drive impact system. I'm probably completely out on this game after the demo.

      I think that my only issue with Modern is that it isn't equal across all characters. For example, Cammy on Modern is actually harder to understand than Cammy on Classic. Specifically doing her different target combos off of punish counter back knuckle are less intuitive and her light confirms off of meaty standing MP aren't even possible. This isn't insignificant stuff either, you need to do these things to make it out of silver because otherwise Cammy is super easy to read. But then on flip side you have Ken, who can do all the stuff he needs to do on Modern with zero issues.

    Modern Controls are good enough, but the Drive meter being a Guard/Drive/EX meter while the Super meter gets to be its own thing in the corner makes this game 5000% more fun for me. I'm like Pat with EX moves, I never ever did them before. As soon as I remembered OD moves existed, I started busting them out like nobody's business.
    Even calling it the Drive Gauge for me makes it very KH2-like, since I'm balancing whether to use it for Summons or Drive Forms.

    I've been enjoying the drive gaugey stuff but I haven't figured out managing it yet. Keep burning out doing OD moves 😅.
    Pretty nice that OD changes the move in non-aesthetic ways. Like the shoto hurricane kick (quarter circle back + kick) if OD'd moves diagonally upwards and lifts the opponent (easy to whiff if not positioned right). OD Kikoken shoots like a bullet.
    Also, I'm pretty sure you can't OD using Modern controls (?) which certainly changes things.

    • @jordibaizabal5682
      @jordibaizabal5682 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So obviously the main thing is with practice you'll get better but try to figure out what your OD moves are useful for because they're not just more damaging versions. Some of the OD moves actually do less damage than the regular form but are useful in some other way. Maybe it starts up faster so it connects when the regular wouldn't, launches higher/gains a launch property, helps with corner carry, helps win the fireball war, etc. Then reserve them for their situational use and not just as damage dealers (unless the situation is that you need more damage to close out the round or something and the OD move does that). That might help conserve the gauge but also just watching it, which comes with experience.
      And you can OD in modern. I normally use classic controls but use modern in world tour and Luke just taught me how. If I'm remembering right it's R2/RT+special button

      Eh, when a game does something right, people are quick to change their minds and act like they were always on the winning side. You could find people writing essays about how a Soulslike should never have a map, or a jump button, etc. but then Elden Ring does them well and those opinions disappear. Elden Ring changed so many things that people swore shouldn't be changed in a proper Soulslike that I'm convinced that if From made a decent "Easy Mode" on ER 2, (very unlikely) people will start acting like they were on board with it all along.

    Yeah, I still think Modern controls are just a casual’s meme, in the same way auto-combos have been.
    I mean, the system implements auto-combos, but that’s besides my point.
    My point is that, this control type dies alongside the casual audience, because it exists purely for that purpose.
    At best, it’s an on-boarding mechanism; a stepping stone to guide players to better handle classic controls.
    At worst, it’s babby mode for babby’s, and nothing more.
    And that’s entirely dependent upon where the actual player decides to take their self-improvement journey.
    It’s a simple calculus, easy-mode with drawbacks, but that’s the thing; no one whose even willing to climb the ladder of self-improvement, even to an intermediate level, is willing to settle for the draw backs that modern controls presents as opposed to taking the time out to optimize.
    This really isn’t any more or less of a big deal than any stylish mode or auto-combos have ever been, and the hype surrounding them is just hot air, as far as I can tell.
    I haven’t seen anyone above gold rank using modern controls online.
    Tl;dr literally all they did was not call it “easy mode”
