    WOOOWW, HUH ? Obnoxious Laker fan !!!! I forgot I commented on this video a year ago. Fast forward a year later and man my mind is BLOWN !!! Kawhi Leonard Finals MVP 2019 !!! Taking down the very team that took him out.. How prophetic, poetic and karmic this all plated out !!!!!!! One more Chip with another team, and he's in a different conversation. You were way ahead of the curb my friend !!!

      Agree. Zazas double step was not a natural defensive move . Kawhi would never say that but everyone with an unbiased mind knows that.

      Danny Green was with him when he went to the raptors and Danny hold the finals record for most 3's in a finals game. Danny is pippen to KAWHI's Jordan and the championship 🏆 rings 💍💍💍 show that #don'tArgueWitMe

    Agree!!! Agree!! Agree!! That is what I call true appreciation of the subtlety of the man and the game. There is not one thing I can refute from your presentation. I can only add one other maybe not so subtle observation about the Popovich system and how it prevents players from running up stats. In Kawhi's case, the "system" inhibits him from being a statistical superstar. And perhaps Pop's influence inhibits him from being a media superstar. And maybe this is what Kawhi's uncle sees. I'm a Laker hater. But if, baskeball gods forbid, he winds up there....
    well...like I said I'm a Kawhi fan. Thx for the effort you put into this!!!!

    I disagree but liked the video. I wish more people put in the effort to give good statistical backing for their arguments like you did. Even highlights! So well done. I especially liked the ppp in the different offensive sets
    Personally I would take lebron every year and had westbrook over kawhi last year. Per 100 possessions spurs were only 1.7 pts better with kawhi on the court. Westbrook was 12.5 lebron 17.0. Even now spurs are still #2 defensively without him. Historically lebron has shown a greater effect on his teams defense on off too as well, even had the better dbpm last year than kawhi. I argue Kawhis defense has gotten worse as his offensive load has increased while durant has had the opposite effect now. Stamina is limited even among the greats.

    • @obnoxiouslakerfan
      @obnoxiouslakerfan  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes, finally someone who disagrees haha. Thank you for the kind words and checking this out.My counter to the on/off court numbers is that Popovich is more of a lineup mastermind than LeBron or Westbrook's coaches, and the Spurs had guys like Danny Green, Jonathan Simmons, Kyle Anderson, and others who could collectively make up for Kawhi's absence so that the Spurs wouldn't suffer too much with him on the bench. The spurs have a system that doesn't rely on any one player like the Cavs' or Thunder's do. Still, those on/off court stats are really interesting, and Kawhi definitely toned down the defensive intensity last year. I'm shocked at how much Kyle Anderson, Dejounte Murray, and LaMarcus Aldridge have improved defensively this year.

    • @ryansth16
      @ryansth16 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally agree. No one's putting up +16/100 on the Spurs. There's also some noise in on-off numbers for one season so I like to look at the last 3 for context. Last 3 years Kawhi was +10.5 +7.1 +1.7 Lebron +16.8 and +16.5 +17 with Westbrook at 6.6 and 12.9 +12.5. I think Kawhi's last year was mainly noise defensively. Add in the pop effect like you said and he's up there with Westbrook. What I think separates Lebron is that he is like a coach on the floor. Defensively he is a very active communicator calling out switches and defensive assignments. Offensively, his teams don't always know how to play without him.
      MVP is a funny award though, because if you focus on "Value" you can never give it to Kawhi -- we know the Spurs can succeed without him. (Just like Durant and Curry now). If you focus on best narrative, the Spurs are too 'boring' and people get drawn to people like Derrick Rose or Westbrook. Best player in the regular season last year? Kawhi would have a good case.

    • @ryansth16
      @ryansth16 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely! The on-off numbers for Kawhi I think were a bit flukey that year as well. The Spurs defense was significantly better with him on the bench--he can't be hurting his team on defense. I like to look at last 3 which were 10.5, 7.1 and 1.7, Westbrook was 6.6 12.9 and 12.5 while LeBron was over 16 every year with the cavs. Add in the Pop effect and I actually thought Kawhi was the better player. I just liked Westbrook's narrative, thought his team needed him more and he played 7 more games.
      LeBron on the other hand, he's such a leader on and off the court. Defensively, he's great at calling out offenses, defensive assignments and switches. Offensively, the team really revolves around him. So if you go on "Value" I think you have to give it to LeBron. Best player in the regular season last year? That's arguable. The only thing Kawhi really had was great player on the best team. But then I think you should consider Curry too who is probably the best offensive player in the league, not a bad defender, and was +17.5 on-off.
      For me, I liked 1 LeBron, 2 Westbrook, 3 Kawhi then 4 Curry. It was close last year. Just note that I don't add Harden in here! Bad regular season defender with +3 on-off.

      @@thomaslee2558 it is interesting how defensive on off data is still favouring lebron over kawhii even with his age and reduced defensive effort. I suspect this is more because of lebron's ability to call out plays and defensive assignments than his actual defensive play. While kawhis teams are still good defensively when he is off the court.
      Never said Kawhi isnt a good defender just interesting when you look at those kinds of stats. And how his dbpm has stayed lower than early career while kawhi has maintained a higher offensive load and usage rate

    • @obnoxiouslakerfan
      @obnoxiouslakerfan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My argument is that his combination of efficient, versatile scoring with low turnovers and excellent defensive stats puts him in a category only with Michael Jordan and is just as statistically rare as averaging a triple-double, and also led to more wins. The Spurs' remarkable team success is the other reason that Kawhi deserved MVP that season, if we're willing to consider one of the best Spurs' regular-season win totals ever as a statistic as well.

    you replied to me on thinking basketball's video. Your video showcases how good Kawhi is but it's very clear you are biased towards Kawhi, he doesn't have high level playmaking ability, and he doesn't know how to handle double teams quite yet. He's absolutely incredible but through avidly watching this raptors season you can see the massive difference between someone who can truly facilitate for his teammates they way Lebron and Curry do. Lastly, you can't really call an almost purely iso player versatile, he needs to improve his passing and his movement off the ball, if he does that he's number 1.That being said, his mentality and leadership effect on his teammates is something you could use to better argue moving him up from number 5. Because you can truly see the effect he has on others, the respect he carries.

    • @MitchellKeller_
      @MitchellKeller_ 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      to clarify, you decided to nitpick stats to make Kawhi look statistically better than others. Which you can do that with a littany of other stats the other way. Love the video thanks for the analyses.

    • @obnoxiouslakerfan
      @obnoxiouslakerfan  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MitchellKeller_ Appreciate your taking the time to check it out. I cut out 10+ minutes of content where I tried to talk more about the combination of Kobe and Tim Duncan's leadership styles I see in Kawhi - glad you see that in him too. In San Antonio, he was used in a more versatile way off the ball, catching stuff in the mid post on curls and things like that, but yeah, Toronto has him just sitting on the perimeter a lot more, and in general he seems like he's trying to conserve a lot more energy than he used to. I'm not sure about struggling with double teams since he did a great job early in the finals and late in the bucks' series, plus the low turnovers always suggest to me that he elects for ball security over versatile playmaking that Lebron or Curry have. I'm not trying to be the most objective guy out there - my bias is strong and shines through here, but once again, appreciate having another thoughtful fan out here sharing some opinions that don't get air time on mainstream sports media these days
